Brooks), Australian HEMA (Historical European Martial-Arts) YouTuber, media critic and author of the Shadow of the Conqueror series… Speaking of authors, show some love to ‘Not to be Mistaken For Sorbet‘, a poetry anthology by a good friend who co-hosts on The Hmm Collective podcast, also very fun.

Spill The Ale, Brethren: Shadiversity recently released this video with the aim of providing game developers with reference material for combat animations. Shad’s a vocal advocate for more realism in media, especially film and gaming that depicts medieval and old historical settings. Even in fantasy and sci-fi media, some true-to-life elements can really help elevate the text and I wholeheartedly agree with him on that.

Shad’s got the hashtag #medievalcombatreference started and invited other content creators to get join him in getting the ball rolling with providing material for realistic combat moveset animations.

How I got into Papa-Shad:

The first video of his I saw was from his Fantasy Rearmed series, where he applies his knowledge to come up with entertaining and unique ideas about what kind of weapons would be realistically most  effective against (and for) different fantasy races. That video on giants was especially horrifying in big-brained kinda way! Let’s just say David wouldn’t have stood a chance against Goliath if they swapped weapons.

Then I got to his fight scene analysis pieces on Star Wars and other media analysis. Then I fell in love with the way he says “stick” for reasons even unknown to myself! Smash cut to now and I’m getting paid to write about the lad.

Splash Damage is working on a new project and is looking for new people to hire for the project!

Splash Damage, a British studio knows for its work on other companies’ franchises, such as Halo, Gears of War, and Wolfenstein has announced it will be working on a new, original sci-fi game.

Splash Damage has created its own IP in its 20 years of work, such as Brink, Outcasters, and Dirty Bomb, but has yet to name this new, exciting project. Why? Because they want YOU to be involved.

Splash Damage: Now Hiring

Splash Damage announced the news on its website and through its social media pages that it is looking for new employees to work on the upcoming sci-fi project.

It isn’t stated what kind of game this new project will be, however, Splash Damage is most known for making multiplayer, third-person shooter games, yet there is no guarantee this will project will be in the same format. All that has been shared so far is a piece of concept art that has an astronaut-type figure in a dark, eerie part of space.

Another indication we have about the game is there will be an online aspect since one of the job roles currently on offer is a Lead Online Services Programmer that has been asked to have experience with PSN, Xbox Live and Steam. Other roles are recommended to have experience in Unreal Engine 4, and development for Switch and mobile platforms.

The developer event taking place next month now has over 20 major gaming publishers signed up to talk business with gaming developers

GI Live: London takes place early next month and it has now been confirmed that over 20 different major gaming publishers have signed up for the developer event.

GI Live, otherwise known as GamesIndustry Live, is a world premiere games investment event hosted by GameIndustry.Biz and GI Live: London is a new video games business conference hosted by GamesIndustry that will take place between October 6 till October 8 and is entirely focused on investment, marketing, brand development and the future of games.

What We Know About GI Live: London

GI Live: London is going to take place digitally on October 6 via a MeettoMatch meeting system and will then take place in-person at London Excel on October 7 and 8 and is the perfect place for gaming companies to connect.

The days at London Excel will consist of all-day meetings, access to the EGX floor, an indie showcase, lunch, drinks, live and pre-recorded talks from industry greats and roundtable sessions. The talks will also be available to view online and will cover a variety of topics such as investment, publishing, marketing, industry trends and data, as well as brand development outside of video games.

The confirmed attendees for the in-person event include Bandai Namco, EA Originals, GamesCo London, Humble Bundle, Kickstarter, Sega, Tencent, Twitch, Ubisoft, Valve, Yogscast Games and many more.

Some events have also been confirmed and they include a Steam Q&A with Valve where guests will have a chance to ask about the upcoming Steam Deck, a talk by Warner Music that will discuss how artists have worked with video games, and there will also be a discussion of how COVID has impacted game sales.

A digital ticket costs £45 while a ticket to the digital and in-person event costs £200 and includes the lunch and drinks provided. You can purchase your ticket here and use this opportunity to discuss game development with some of the biggest publishers.

Attendees will need to provide either full vaccination, negative lateral flow test/PCR test, or natural immunity from a positive PCR test result, and wearing a face mask is strongly advised.

Tale of Tales

Belgium studio Tale of Tales is soon to be shut down. They are best known for their unconventional approach and their latest title, Sunset, was well received by the press but sold pretty poorly as a whole. Due to this, the studio will now stop developing games.

The company invested in advertising and professional pr, but Sunset only sold around 4,000 copies. This figure also includes sale purchases and Kickstarter. Michaël Samyn and Auriea Harvey are the founders of Tale of Tales, and they recently wrote in a blog post – “In the end, we spent more money than we had on the production of Sunset,” “Because we wanted to make it really good and reach a wider audience. Compared to the ambitions we had for the game, the extra $40,000 seemed like a relatively small sum. Surely we can make that amount back in the first month of sales!”

The duo are clearly rather upset with the downfall of their company, but they are nonetheless proud and pleased of what they achieved with Sunset – “We are happy and proud that we have tried to make a “game for gamers.” We really did our best with Sunset, our very best. And we failed. So that’s one thing we never need to do again. Creativity still burns wildly in our hearts but we don’t think we will be making videogames after this. And if we do, definitely not commercial ones.”
