A few HoloLenses were initially meant to leave for the International Space Station this weekend just gone, but an issue arose… The shuttle which was supplying the headsets blew up… NASA have already been using the HoloLens to communicate more efficiently with Earth.

Luckily, the shuttle in question, was un-maned and no one was hurt – “The astronauts are safe aboard the station and have sufficient supplies for the next several months,” NASA said in a statement about SpaceX CRS-7’s unfortunate demise a mere 139 seconds into its journey. “We will work closely with SpaceX to understand what happened, fix the problem and return to flight.”

“HoloLens and other virtual and mixed reality devices are cutting edge technologies that could help drive future exploration and provide new capabilities to the men and women conducting critical science on the International Space Station,” said director of NASA’s ISS program Sam Scimemi on the NASA Blog. “This new technology could also empower future explorers requiring greater autonomy on the journey to Mars.”

The Microsoft HoloLens is to be used on the International Space Station

Microsoft revealed at E3 it’s plans for the HoloLens, which is to be used in gaming and in science. NASA have recently revealed that it has it’s own plans for the headset, and will be taking two of them up to the International Space Station! Astronauts will used the headset to aid in training and for guidance in the ISS. This will be done using an application called Sidekick.

Sidekick, according to NASA, has two different modes; Procedure mode and Remote Expert mode. The first layers illustrations and text over objects, augmenting the astronaut’s knowledge and reducing the amount of training necessary to carry out some of the operations. The second lets a technician or operator on Earth to Skype in and talk with said astronaut. The headset transmits the astronaut’s view to the operator, who will then be able to talk him/her through a situation. The operator can also draw and annotate on the astronaut’s view via the headset. Pretty nifty stuff, eh?

The headsets will be going up on 28th June via commercial rocket company SpaceX’s next resupply flight. Keep your eyes peeled for more details and you can watch NASA testing project Sidekick below!

Microsoft have done it again!

The ever-growing Microsoft really pulled this one out of the bag at their E3 2015 conference this week, with Minecraft for HoloLens. Even if there are a bunch of you out there who are Team Sony.. DON’T ACT LIKE YOU’RE NOT IMPRESSED!

As you can see by the video below, with this ground-breaking piece of equipment, when playing the game you just have to vocalise where you would like the game to move and it will do this. In the conference, we saw a whole Minecraft world emerge from a table and rise up out of it. This is what you will see once the HoloLens is activated and over your eyes. You can build, explore, find friends, travel in mine carts, and a whole host of other things; all at your fingertips. The table is just the beginning.. Fill your entire room with your world if you so please. The possibilities are endless with Minecraft for HoloLens and, even from just viewing the conference, we felt like we were there in the world of Minecraft!

This truly was Microsoft’s grand highlight of their conference (as well as the undeniably awesome Backwards Compatibility Mode) and, if you missed out on the showcase, then you can watch it just below. You won’t want to miss out!
