🎵Kirby, Kirby, Kirby. That’s the name you should know! Kirby, Kirby, Kirby he’s the star of the show!🎵

God, I love that song! Nintendo‘s adorable maximum-pink-having cute “poyo” dispensary of a mascot will be in the upcoming Kirby And The Forgotten Land, which recently dropped a release date trailer with a couple extra details!

Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be coming to Nintendo Switch on March 25th this year! Now, before I do a 🎵breakdown, breakdown 🎵of the gameplay and trailer info, click here for a YouTube link to the trailer itself if you’re so inclined.

A Kirbian Summary of Aesthetics: Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be the titular pink ping-pong-accessory’s first foray into the world of 3D platforming. Despite some design and gameplay seemingly inspired by Mario Odyssey, there’s juxtaposition in Nintendo’s commodification of pure unadulterated wholesomeness exploring a ruined post-apocalypse with more in common with The Last of Us or Breath of the Wild than prior games. That’s a nice bit of Brechtian subversion!

Modern Nintendo and Co-Op Games; An Intellectual Critique: Which is to say, THIS KIRBY GAME WILL HAVE ACTUAL PLAYER 2 CHARACTERS and I am here for it! I’m not talking about sentient disembodied hats or sentient disembodied star people (looking at you Cappy and… the entire Luma species), I’m talking thick meaty good ol’ fashioned sidekicks! Player 2 will be able to control a Waddledee with a spear, seemingly capable of most of Player 1’s in-game abilities (copy abilities notwithstanding). Anyone who knows me knows I love me some good couch co-op fun, so that alone’s made this game hop on my radar more than before.

Kirby’s Abilities; In Conversation with Tupi Philosophy: The main mechanical selling point of this and other Kirby games is the puffball’s ability to inhale small enemies and attacks, only to either spit them back out or absorb them to transform and gain some related ability. For example: Let’s say you’re Kirby, widdle-waddling along some overgrown building when all of a sudden, you’re jumped by a fire-spewing bear-pig-man! Now, if you’re me, the only bloke in a 20 mile radius who thinks Nando’s hottest flavor isn’t as deadly as folks make it out to be, you suck that flame and BOOM. Now you’re Fire Kirby! With the ability to shoot various forms of fire at enemies, including mix-tapes!

In addition to classic abilities, other copy-abilities for Forgotten Land will include a Drill form, a gun-toting ranger and more.

Additional Modes: Players will also have the option to visit Waddle Dee Town in-game, where you can play various minigames and compete in online leaderboards. Nintendo has confirmed Kirby and the Forgotten Land will have local co-op for all previously-mentioned features (thank God) and currently, Nintendo is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Kirby series, releasing this wallpaper to all as a tie-in.

Kirby: Song From the Classic Franchise Nominated For A Grammy Award

A new Kirby arrangement from The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher has been nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards

Something a little different today as this news was certainly unexpected, especially as I watched it happen in real-time. On Tuesday, the 64th Annual Grammy Awards announced the nominations from all the music released in the last year and the adorable pink hero we all know as Kirby has a shot at winning.

Kirby has already been in the news recently thanks to the announcement of the 3-D platformer game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and now he could be the first video game character to be responsible for winning a Grammy award.

Meta Knight’s Revenge

So, obviously, Kirby isn’t the one that made the song, but he is the inspiration. The song nominated is a classic song from the Kirby franchise performed by The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher. It’s an arrangement of “Meta Knight’s Revenge” from Kirby Super Star which was released on the SNES and created by Charlie Rosen and Jack Silverman.

It was nominated for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella category alongside 4 other arrangements. As for the song in question, The 8-Bit Big Band’s arrangement maintains the same iconic melody that made the original so famous, yet takes advantage of it being performed with a live band. It provides a much smoother, groovier take of the melody. You can watch The 8-Bit Big Band and Button Masher work their magic with the song down below.

The 8-Bit Big Band is a full-sized jazz orchestra consisting of 25+ people, that was formed to celebrate some of the best musical themes written from various video games from all consoles. Other video game franchises they have covered include The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid 3, Portal 2, Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing, Super Mario Odyssey and a tasteful rendition of the Wii Shop Channel Music but it’s Austin Powers. It’s truly worth checking out their channel if you have yet to do so.

The only other gaming music to receive a Grammy Award nomination in the past was Journey in 2012 for its soundtrack, so here’s to hoping Kirby and The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher be the first to win a Grammy Award.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land could be a series breakthrough

Our favourite pink blob is back with a 3D platforming adventure

Kirby is one of Nintendo’s most iconic characters, but for the past few years he’s been mostly neglected – and Kirby games have been struggling to compete with Nintendo’s other titles. But things are looking up for Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

The game was announced officially at Nintendo’s Direct, to much excitement. This entry in the series will be Kirby’s first fully-3D platformer. Perhaps it’s due to Kirby’s positive reception in Smash Bros Ultimate that led Nintendo to produce a series of Kirby fighter games, but the vast majority of fans have been longing to see Kirby returning to his action-platformer roots.

The world depicted in Kirby and the Forgotten Land appears to be a post-apocalyptic version of our own world, overrun with plants and animals. It is a jarring thematic contrast from the typical bright Kirby colours and cheery soundtrack – which only makes me more curious to see how the game will unfold.

Despite how different the setting is to Kirby’s home planet, Popstar, it is complete with familiar characters, enemies, and obstacles. Kirby will be kitted out with his iconic (and terrifyingly powerful) copy ability too.

I do have to wonder about the dissonance between the eerie setting and cheerful Kirby-esque tone. What brought this civilisation to rubble? Could Kirby’s god-like powers possibly have something to do with it? As cute and squishy as he looks, Kirby’s dealt with some of Nintendo’s most frightening and straight-up absurd bosses ever.

Whatever the story behind this lost civilisation, I’m expecting it to be just as strange and inexplicable as the series’ other elements.

The previous platformer in the Kirby line-up was Kirby Star Allies for the Nintendo Switch in 2018. In this game, Kirby was able to recruit up to three enemies to help him conquer various platform challenges. The game received high praises for its graphics, mechanics, and soundtrack. Additional content added in a later update provided eager players with some extra challenges, and the game became the most successful series entry since Kirby’s Dream Land.
