Games that Oddly Capture the essence of ‘Squid Game’

The hit Netflix Series ‘Squid Game’ is becoming increasingly popular. Not all the games that are dark, sinister, bloody and battle royale are like Squid Game. There are many light-hearted games that oddly enough, can come across that weird Squid Game spectrum. They may not be the same style, but they definitely have that dark undertone we’re looking for. We’ve mentioned some Must-play for Squid Game fans here and the relation to Fall Guys there, but these are just a few more to pique your interest.

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Hear me out. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is nothing but fun and games, driving in beautiful, fun-filled, crazy race tracks, but there’s a massive downside to Mario Kart 8 deluxe, or should I say dark side? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe includes painful and violent attacks such as getting hit by fireballs, bombs, blue shell bombs, haunted by ghosts, falling off dangerous edges, crushed by massive thwomps…it all sounds like a nightmare in reality. Fair enough, you have Latiku to save you from massive falls, but what about the rest of the pain? After one or two races, most people would want the nightmare to end and all of that…just to win a gold trophy? Sounds pretty sinister to us.

2. Animal Crossing New Horizons

“How? They’re just adorable animal villagers you can live with on a beautiful island…” Well, I’m about to ruin your childhood. If you’re unaware there is a massive trading ‘business’ over the Animal Crossing Community through Facebook, Twitter, Discord and an app called Nookazon. Players will steal, lie and charge millions of in-game bells for a particular villager or item…some even charge real money for specific items on social media or eBay. Oh, but it gets darker than that.

The Animal Crossing New Horizons Discord is a wonderful place for players to get creative, happily trade and have fun with island visits…but there are a few that put their beloved villagers up for sale or even host a GAME SHOW where the winner can obtain the villager of their liking, which is typically Raymond, the new smug cat villager.

If you look at it from a certain angle, it can get pretty dark…that can almost be seen as villager trafficking. The poor villagers abducted from their homes were unknowingly sold or placed up as a prize. Don’t believe me? Check this video out.

3. Mario Party Superstars

Mario Party….we’ve all seen the Mario Party and Squid Game meme and it’s been mentioned in this previous blog. It’s known quite well now across the gaming community, but no one is talking about Superstars…While it’s essentially the same thing, there are old GameCube boards and Mario Party is now accessible for handheld Nintendo Switch Players, aka those who own a Nintendo Switch Lite. This means more players, more deaths and more viscous neverending cycles for Mario and his friends. Constantly respawning after falling into a fiery pit, off a large cliff, being yeeted out of existence. It’s pretty brutal if you ask me… Want the Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch? “Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout” was released back in 2020. The game is based on extreme obstacle course game shows, like “Total Wipeout”, “Takeshi’s Castle” and “Ninja Warrior”. Players compete in Minigames, with people being knocked out of the running at the end of each, until only a single player is left standing.

“Squid game” is a Korean tv series currently streaming on Netflix. The show centers around a number of people who are trapped into competing in a series of minigames in the hope of earning a large amount of money. People who lose these games are killed off.

With this in mind, it makes sense that Squids game success may be an inspiration for Fallguys going forward. In an interview with techradar, Games designer for “Fall Guys” Joe Walsh mentioned that they may consider resurrecting a scrapped minigame after it appeared in squid game.

One of the first games played in “Squid Game” is redlight/greenlight, which was also considered early on as a minigame for Fallguys. However, Joe Walsh explains that this gamemode was dropped due to difficulty in implementation. Standing still in a video game is a lot easier than it is in real life, as players can just put down the controller or take their hands off the keyboard. However, after seeing squid games success, the developers are considering reworking the minigame to try to get it to work.

There are actually a number of fan-made versions of Squid game in Roblox and Fortnite, so the developers could potentially take inspiration from those. However they will want to strike fast, as at the current time there is no mention of a second season of Squid Game being on the way.

If this minigame makes it in, it could potentially help revitalise fallguys, which has been floundering since launch. If this happens, it would be a good chance to bring one of the more unique battle royal games back into the spotlight.

Thank Christ on a silver platter that Squid Game got as popular as it did so fast, now I have an excuse to crossover two of my favourite things: Gaming and the hit Netflix series Squid Game. Here’s some games I recommend for other fans of the show! Click on the highlighted subheadings for links to where you can get them on our page!

Overcooked

I dunno about you, but that episode with the honeycomb sure got me hungry. The art of cooking is a must, but unlike that particular episode, you won’t have to fly solo in Overcooked! In fact, it’s best with some good ol couch co-op or online play, as you and your partner(s) arrange how to tackle the incoming orders at a restaurant by divvying up responsibilities among eachother. Communication is key, speed is key and great food is definitely a nice Brucey bonus!

Mario Party Games

While this one may not have as high stakes as life-or-death struggles, you gotta admit the Front Man and the folks in charge of the Squid Game competitions are definitely a creative bunch. Maybe in another life, the billionaire masterminds behind the Squid Game would’ve found a new joi de vivre as a game designer, but that’s neither here nor there. Mario Party games will definitely scratch that itch for letting you take part in a wide variety of mini games with unique rules, be it with friends, family, enemies or frenemies!

Fortnite (figures, toys, board games and bundles)

Let’s not mince words. Between Squid Game, Hunger Games and PUBG, the battle royale genre (fittingly inspired by the classic book and film ‘Battle Royale’) definitely has its fingers in a lot of pop-culture pies. Fortnite is completely free to play on most platforms, but if you’re feeling like bringing some extra style to the battle field, buy our Last Laugh expansion bundles on Xbox or PS5 if you want to play with 3 character skins (Joker’s having multiple styles), some cool extra cosmetics and even 1000 Vbucks you can spend to get extra stuff in the in-game store!

Nier Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition

While a little more on the anime’d up post-apocalyptic existential sci-fi train than Squid Game, both properties have very well written mystery elements, a heaped tablespoon of philosophical and social commentary, plus a series of fittingly dramatic moments of tear-worthy crippling dread at the ruthlessness of the human species (and a tiny dash of optimism for good measure… maybe).

Kirby Battle Royale!

Basically the same joke as Fortnite, but also POYO!!!! And I swear, the Kirby Right Back At Ya theme song will live rent free in my brain hole until the day I die. Play Kirby Battle Royale with friends or in a fun little single-player campaign.

The Escapists 1+2

This one’s for those of you who’d be on the side of voting out of the titular Squid Games after the testicle-shrinkingly intense suspense of the red light green light game. What better way to get out of that scenario than a good ol fashioned prison escape game?
