With Halo 5: Guardians due to be released later in the year, as well as the backward compatibility bringing a massive amount of Xbox 360 games to the Xbox One, its a monumental year for Xbox and Microsoft has good reason to believe that Xbox One sales will increase as the year goes on.

Speaking to GameSpot at E3, Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg said, “A lot of people have been waiting for the next Halo; a lot of people have been waiting for Gears; a lot of people have been waiting for backwards compatibility.” Greenberg added, “And so we think having all of that coming this holiday; we expect we’re going to see a massive migration.”

Whether its Xbox 360 owners moving on to the Xbox One or even PlayStation fans, its going to be an exciting year for the Xbox One.

One of Microsoft’s big announcements at E3 2015 was, of course, the backward compatibility function. Old Xbox 360 games will now become playable on the Xbox One, although this will not be the case for all old games. At the moment, members of the Xbox Preview Program can currently use this function already but for 22 games only. These games include:

A Kingdom for Keflings

A World of Keflings

Alien Hominid HD

Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo-Tooie

BattleBlock Theater

Defense Grid

Geometry Wars Evolved

Hexic HD

Jetpac Refuelled

Kameo

Mass Effect

N+

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark Zero

Small Arms

Super Meat Boy

Toy Soldiers

Toy Soldiers: Cold War

Viva Piñata

Viva Piñata: TIP

Zuma

Xbox 360 discs themselves do not play but once put it, will trigger a download of a compatible file. Microsoft have added a section on their Xbox Feedback page for the purpose of allowing Xbox users to vote on which games they want added to the growing list of backwards compatible games. The program is expected to release for all Xbox users later this year, with Microsoft saying fall 2015.

With more games expected to be added to the list in the coming months, watch this space.

One of the most exciting news to come out of E3 this year has to be Xbox One’s backward compatibility announcement.

Sony Executive, Shuhei Yoshida, responded to the announcement, stating it was “interesting”, but also saying that the company has no plans at the moment to offer backward compatibility on the PlayStation 4. The Sony executive went on to discuss how, “The technology involved must be very challenging.”

Xbox One backward compatibility is available now for Xbox Preview members and will soon be available to everyone, making hundreds of Xbox 360 games available to play on the Xbox One.

PlayStation Now is an app that offers a sort of backward compatibility, although it is a paid streaming service. Yoshida finished of by saying,”backward compatibility is hard”, and “I won’t say well never do it, but its not any easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that.”
