5 Black Game Characters You Might Have Heard of

Black History Month is coming to an end and we think it’s time to have some appreciation posts rolling in for the games industry. We don’t get to hear much about the representation of black characters in video games too often. This month we’ve decided to put a number of games that have amazing black main protagonists or characters in games.

1. Dr Eva Rosalene – To The Moon

Dr Eva Rosalene is one of the three main protagonists in ‘To The Moon‘. She is not only witty, but she’s smart and observant, she also shares a loving bond with her partner Dr Neil Watts. She plays a massive role in the story and To The Moon is a story-driven game developed by Freebird Games, and is about two doctors who travel through an old man’s memories to fulfil his dying wish. There is also the sequel called Finding Paradise, where Dr Eva Rosalene makes her return.

4. Barret Wallace – Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Barret Wallace VA played by John Eric Bentley, and is a supporting character in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and certainly a very memorable one. Despite his strong attitude, rash decisions and he may not be the brightest at times, but there is one thing for sure. Barret cares about his family, he cares about his team and he cares about society, which is why he is working so hard to do what he does. Barret goes through a lot of character development and you go from hating Barret to eventually loving his character.  Final Fantasy is one of the biggest JRPG franchises at the moment, Final Fantasy 7 Remake being a very popular one and even owned a spot on the PlayStation 5.

3. Spider-Man Miles Morales

Spider-Man Miles Morales VA by Nadji Jeter, we couldn’t leave him out. Miles is a great example of character development, the gameplay is carried by the wild, young, personality of Miles and his heroic actions after being dumped with a bunch or huge responsibilities…like saving the city. Spider-Man Miles Morales has been one of the best PlayStation Games sold and is in the top 10 of the best games for the PS5 so far.

4. Frey Holland – Forspoken

Recently at the PlayStation Showcase, Forspoken – a next-gen game had a gameplay trailer, starring Ella Balinska who is voice acting the main protagonist – Frey Holland in Forspoken. She is not only a voice actor but she has been working to help the game feel alive through her body movements, facial expressions with performance capture and much more. Ella is also well known for her acting in various movies such as Charlie’s Angels, The Athena and British TV series Midsomer Murders.  Forspoken will without a doubt be one of the biggest games to release by Square Enix in 2022, it’s lovely to see a black female protagonist coming up in such a great title.

5. Black Panther

Lastly, we have another Hero from the Marvel Universe and that is Black Panther. In Marvel’s Avengers, an expansion pack DLC was released for Black Panther, named War of Wakanda. The Voice Actor is Christopher Judge, who is well known for his acting in The Dark Knight Rises, Stargate and Stargate: The Ark of Truth. War of Wakanda is a great DLC and is highly recommended. Not only is Black Panther seen as a hero, but he is seen as a leader who offers guidance to his community, as we know very well after having seen from the movies.

Games That Are Being Developed With Black People

Black History Month is coming to an end and we think it’s time to have some appreciation posts rolling in for the games industry. We don’t get to hear much about black developers, publishers, composers, writers or voice actors in games too often. This month we’ve decided to put a number of games developed by Black People or that have black people involved in the making.

1. Dot’s Home

DOT’S HOME is a single-player, narrative-driven video game developed by Weathered Sweater, a black-owned game and interactive media studio (Creative Leader Ryan Huggins – Trinidadian American), Aerial Knight and Titan ARX Interactive.

The story follows a young black woman in Detroit who lives with her grandmother. She travels through time to relive the memories of her family’s history, where they touch on topics about race and the idea of home, these topics come with what’s described by the developers as ‘difficult choices’.

This is a great game to inspire – not just young black people, but many minorities to learn more about their roots, culture and their family’s circumstances growing up. The game is currently FREE and available on steam.

2. Spirit Swap

Spirit Swap is an action-puzzle game developed by Soft Not Weak, Spirit Swap is a narrative-driven game set in a fantasy world of ‘witchy demons’. Filled with lo-fi beats, puzzle-solving and amazing illustrations and engaging dialogue! “Cast spells, be queer, & crash the biggest concert of the year!” There are 5 different game modes and you can even decorate your room or make decisions for your character. The planned release date is 2022.

3. Aerial Knight’s Never Yield

Aerial Knight’s Never Yield is a survivor-runner game developed by Niel Jones, also known as Aerial Knight. Never Yield is set in a futuristic Tokyo style Detroit and follows the story of a young person named Wally who has found something that can change Detroit as we know it. The soundtrack has a jazzy bebop style to it and is packed with amazing graphics and lots of fast-paced action. This is available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

4. Before I Forget

Before I Forget is a narrative exploration game developed by 3-Fold Games. The story follows a woman named Sunite with early-onset dementia. You get to explore her world filled with love and loss and help restore small bits of her memories. Examine her belongings, postcards, notes, photographs and more, to piece together Sunites past. Before I Forget put portrays a perspective of someone suffering from this condition and how their memories can slip away. This is a wonderful game to raise awareness of those who suffer from dementia on a daily basis.

Black People In The Games Industry That You Need To Talk About

Black History Month is coming to an end and we think it’s time to have some appreciation posts rolling in for the games industry. We don’t get to hear much about black developers, publishers, composers, writers or voice actors in games too often. This month we’ve decided to put a number of black people in the industry who are working to bring amazing content to you.

1. Derrick Fields – Founder, Game Director of WakingOniGames

Derrick Fields is the founder and game director of WakingOniGames who is ‘Creating Onsen Master’  “A hot spring customer strategy game about healing!” Derreck Fields is also the lead designer, 2D and 3D Artist involved with Onsen Master as well. He was the Lead Artist for Uplift Games and a Visual Effects Artist for an upcoming film, currently in post-production and has even been a freelance Illustrator for the popular game ‘Cards Against Humanity’. Derrick has also been a host for the Wholesome Games Direct 2021. Here’s a Taster of The Onsen Master Gameplay.

2. Dorrell Ettienne – Composer for Games

Dorrell Ettienne, a Composer for WakingOniGames, who’s also composing the music for Onsen Master. He spent 4 years working at the Victoria Albert Museum and for 5 years since 2016 up until the present moment has been a Freelance Composer. Dorrell has a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Kent and a Master’s degree in composition for screen from the Royal College of Music. It’s inspiring to see Dorrell take a leap forward into his passion and watch him now create amazing soundtracks for video games. Here’s a taster.

3. Niel Jones – Creator of Aerial Knight’s Never Yield

Niel Jones, also known as Aerial Knight – is the Creator of a running action game Never Yield that has been featured on Nintendo’s Indie World Direct. Niel is also known as a 3D Artist and has tons of experience across a wide variety of game projects such as Dott’s Home, Bloom and JETT. Niel is also a Senior UX and Games Designer for Unity Technologies and a Creative Art Director for JoLu Productions. Below is a video of Niel’s own game Aerial Knight’s Never Yield.

4. Ella Balinska – VA For Upcoming Game Forspoken

Recently at the PlayStation Showcase, Forspoken – a next-gen game had a gameplay trailer, starring Ella Balinska, the main protagonist in Forspoken. She is not only a voice actor but she has been working to help the game feel alive through her body movements, facial expressions with performance capture and much more. 5. Marcus Montgomery – Founder of WeAreGameDevs

Lastly, we have Marcus Montgomery, the founder of WeAreGameDevs and a video game designer with almost 2 decades of experience. Marcus has been a lead game designer for Glu Mobile, a project Manager for Oculus VR and Senior Gameplay designer for nWay Inc. His website WeAreGameDevs also works to highlight underrepresented people, companies and game devs in the industry and support their efforts to bring many, life-changing entertainment.
