Knuckles, the Ugandan Feminist Professional Epic-Theme haver of the Sonic franchise has been confirmed for an upcoming TV series starring Idris Elba, who will be playing the character in the upcoming sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog (2020).

I’m not even going to pretend to be unbiased for this piece, I fawned over the Sonic Heroes character sections of the game manual and fan-boyed for Knuckles because he was Martial-Artist and I was always on a Bruce Lee or Jean Claude Van-Damme film bender every other week!

The series will be dropping around 2023 exclusively on Paramount+, alongside a Star Trek series, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and even another cinematic crack at the world of Dungeons and Dragons… Okay, really? DnD? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some roleplaying, but the whole appeal is that you and your mates get to take part in your own story running on the most powerful graphics processor in the world: Your Imagination! Isn’t that right Michael?

You Already Had Second Movie – “I know, but what about third movie”? Haruki Satomi (SEGA CEO) expressed his delight at the news of a third Sonic the Hedgehog film already being announced for development, so I imagine he and the folks at Paramount are pretty confident in the success for the sequel. Fingers crossed this doesn’t turn into a ‘Dark Universe’ debacle where everyone makes promises they can’t keep and purely rely on the test of time to conveniently hope everyone forgets while being too busy drooling over the next Marvel film!

A Socio-Historical Explanation of Knuckles In Meme Culture:

First off is the relatively pedestrian stuff: Knuckles is a sometimes-friend, sometimes-enemy and mostly-frenemy to Sonic the Hedgehog across much of the series.

Cut to some nebulous time in 2016 when YouTuber VirtuallyVain roleplayed as an African drug lord in a Call of Duty letsplay video, the breakout mock phrase from that video being “follow me, I know the way”

Not long after that, YouTuber Gregzilla released a sonic game review that featured an… Artistically peculiar-looking version of Knuckles lovingly dubbed “Fuckles”.

A popular pastime for Call of Duty players in the early days of the internet was to smush in sound clips of African soldiers and battle cries, something VirtuallyVain was playing off at the time. Then comes the game VR Chat, a DeviantArt artist by tidiestflyer made a 3D model of ‘Fuckles’ for the game and ey presto- Now you’ve got a jokey funtime trolling community that consists of a sea of ‘Fuckles’ madly ad-libing about “the way”, based on VirtuallyVain’s own pastiche and 2000s Ugandan action B-movies like Who Killed Captain Alex.

As is the case with most things on the internet, the original meaning of “the way” naturally expanded to mean literally anything the user desires it too! The original context was “follow me, I know the way” to win in a shooty bang-bang game, or in the case of Captain Alex, “he knows the way… of using a gun”. Nowadays, “the way” or “the wae” is a sort of hilariously abstract generalized idea of an ideal mindset, goal or purpose.

I’d do a deep-dive into the Ugandan Knuckles “Kwin”/”Queen” joke, but that’d require me to get even more NSFW than I have been lately, a brother can’t live on flippant sex jokes immature asides alone!

Can’t be too mad though, seeing a beloved 90s sitcom fogey run around the map talking about “you kids today with your Face Books and your Snap Talks and your Ted Chats and-” only to get detonated from an enemy player’s clinger is also a particularly entertaining thought.

Back to the Actual News: Epic Games have allegedly cut a deal with Paramount Pictures, according to Nick Baker in this Xbox Era Podcast episode. He goes on to claim this deal will include multiple Paramount properties.

“I’ve been told that apparently Paramount has signed a deal with Epic to bring properties to Fortnite. The main one that I had heard about was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles […] If they’ve done the deal with Fortnite, it obviously opens the door. So, for example, we’ve got two Venoms, like, three Spider-Men […] We’ve already got [Master] Chief, so do we get Halo TV Chief?” – Nick Baker.

What Else Is There: While this may be a bit of a long shot, Star Trek is currently owned by Viacom, which itself owns Paramount, so if (God-willing) Fortnite brings back the lightsabers in another Star Wars event, maybe we’ll also get to see the Mandalorians duke it out with Spock and Picard.

On a more realistic note, Paramount owns Nickelodeon, which has the rights to Spongebob, as well as South Park and Shrek! Considering Fortnite’s affinity for including animated characters from Rick and Morty to Naruto, it could be done. Heck, if PUBG can crossover with Baby Shark, (why yes, I did write on that, thanks for noticing) I’m pretty sure Nickelodeon wouldn’t take much of a hit for letting one of their cash cows shoot “Halo man” (wink) in the face.

The first glimpse of the live-action Halo TV series has been shown.

Xbox celebrated their 20th anniversary through a celebratory livestream last night, offering the latest news and updates for what’s next in store for the gaming giants.

One thing Xbox offered its fans, in particular, was the first glimpse at the live-action Halo TV series that will be streaming on Paramount+ in 2022.

Teaser trailers are known for being short, but sweet, and the teaser trailer for Halo is no exception.

The 28-second clip opens with the camera panning up the back of an unclothed Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) covered in scars, then transitions to a glimpse of the Mjolnir Mark VI armour, with the shot first at waist length, followed by a close up of Master Chief’s service number, 117. We then see Master Chief putting on the final part of his armour (the helmet) and the camera then gives us our first glimpse of Master Chief completely. It’s then when we hear the first voice, belonging to Cortana (Jen Taylor), saying “Hello, Master Chief” and then it cuts to the Halo logo with The Halo Theme playing in the background.

For a teaser trailer, it uses enough references and nostalgia points to get fans excited for what is to come, and yet keeps the mystery of what the show is going to be about. Recently it was confirmed that the TV show would show a different side to Master Chief than Halo fans have ever seen before.

Kiki Wolfkill, the studio head of Halo Transmedia at 343 Industries, explained that the biggest challenge of adapting Halo into a TV show was bringing Mast Chief, an iconic character that has existed for 20 years, into a new medium. The team had the difficult task of unpacking the game’s usual design of being in the chief’s armour and decided to create something entirely different that gives the audience a brand new perspective of the Chief that you don’t experience in the franchise.

The Xbox character we know and love will be shown in a different light for fans to experience

One of the most highly anticipated game adaptations coming out next year is the TV show for Xbox’s classic series Halo. After 20 years of existence, the franchise created by Bungie is finally getting its official live-action adaptation and fans are keen (as well as hesitant) to see how one of the most beloved characters in gaming history, Master Chief, will be portrayed.

Kiki Wolfkill, the studio head of Halo Transmedia at 343 Industries, gave insight to IGN to what the fans can expect with the Master Chief’s portrayal and the answer is nothing anyone has ever seen before.

The upcoming  Halo TV adaptation stars Emmy and Tony nominee Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Earth’s most advanced warrior in the 26th century, who is the only hope of salvation from the Covenant, an unstoppable alliance of alien worlds committed to the destruction of humanity, and will be airing exclusively on Paramont+ early next year.

In a first-person shooter, there is only so much of a character journey because of that wanting to maintain some of that character for people to pour into him or her. So, TV gives us a long form ability to really focus on character and story in a way that’s harder to relay in a first-person game.” Kiki Wolfkill, GameStop.

Wolfkill goes onto explain that while fans can play the games and already have a sense of who Master Chief is, you can put that aside and enjoy this new experience as it takes you on a new journey, as well as see the character from the TV show adaptation without feeling like it is impeding on the character you have grown up loving.
