The Witcher fans could have banded together to buy a house

The Kickstarter for the The Witcher: Ronin – A Hard Copy Collector’s Edition Manga smashed its original goal within a matter of hours. That didn’t stop fans from continuing to pledge, though. The Kickstarter ended with a whopping €678,036, that’s exactly £579,580… and 27 pence. A whole 750% of the original goal.

Irresistible rewards and gorgeous art promised to Kickstarter pledgers no doubt were the root of its success.

If you’re wondering why fans continued to donate even after the goal was met, a quick gander at the rewards on Kickstarter will tell you why. All Kickstarter pledgers of the lowest tier have been promised a copy of the manga, as well as a postcard with the variant cover artwork. If you shelled out another €15 euros, you’d get a poster as well.

20 dedicated fans pledged €150 to get all that, plus a hand drawn sketch by artist Hayata. It’s honestly a pretty sweet deal, hence it was limited to 20 backers max.

One lucky sod got themselves the €1,050 pledge with a hand-drawn black and white cover by Hayata – wow. I think they deserve to have the Witcher fan bragging rights for life.

In addition, there were several selectable add-ons including a tote bag, sculpture, and pins.

“The Witcher: Ronin presents The Witcher universe as if it were based around the rich traditions of Japanese folklore. In a world such as this, the role of a professional monster slayer is just as essential — as dangerous Yokai and Oni (Japanese spirits and demons) are constantly on the prowl.”

This exciting take on The Witcher series looks absolutely gorgeous, and I’m so excited to see Geralt in a completely new environment. The Kickstarter edition will include 55 extra pages of content: 45 of side-stories, and 10 making-of pages. You might have missed the Kickstarter, but you’ll at least be able to purchase the manga when it drops in January 2022.

I’m already fairly confident that this will be another Witcher masterpiece!

The upgrade will be free and includes some DLC…

During a live-streamed event held on Friday, developer CD Projekt Red provided some details regarding the upcoming next-gen version of The Witcher 3. They informed us that it is simply an update that will be free for those who currently own the game on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, whilst you can make a standalone purchase of the upgraded version if you do not currently own the game.

Speaking about the “next-gen” PC version in September 2020, CD Projekt’s VP of business development Michał Nowakowski told investors it would include improved visual quality and additional features.

“There will be a patch adding visual quality and a few extra features, and of course, we’re not going to charge people for a patch – it’s something they’re going to download, and it will upgrade their game; upgrade their experience – but we’re not going to ask them for extra money,” he said.

“If you have your game on PC, you’ll just download an update – and the game will continue to cost what it currently does on the PC market. We consider it an upgrade of the currently existing game.”

A new set of (free) DLC reportedly inspired by the game’s Netflix show is also being released alongside the upgrade. However, the Netflix DLC items will not be exclusive to the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S update and will also be available to PS4, Xbox One, and Switch players. We don’t know the scope of the DLC, but it doesn’t sound like it will involve new areas or quests. Witcher 3’s updated cover art for the “Complete Edition” notes includes “extra items inspired by the Netflix series”.

They additionally shared the cover art for the next-gen console upgrade, which you can see below alongside the trailer for The Witcher Season 2.

Voice acting is an influential element of any video game experience. Whether the graphics are immaculate and the story-telling is entrancing, a game, specifically the characters, can still feel flat if the voice acting isn’t up to par. It requires years of practice and establishing one’s presence in the industry. Voice actors such as Troy Baker, Nolan North, Jennifer Hale, and Keith David all have successful careers in video game voice acting and can easily have influence over a person’s interest in purchasing a game. Yet the advancement of technology is changing voice acting as we know it, and it raises more concerns than anything else.

Earlier in April, developer Nicich340 released a mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine expansion pack titled “A Night to Remember” available on Nexus Mods, and it is certainly living up to that name. With nearly 13,000 downloads, the mod adds an entirely new adventure to the game, featuring old and new characters, new cutscenes, game assets, and voice acting.

Specifically, Geralt of Rivia’s lines were produced by an AI using CyberVoice, accurately reproducing the voice of Doug Cackle who plays him in The Witcher 3. The fact the AI’s lines are indistinguishable from the voice actor’s has proven to be a big worry amongst voice actors and fans themselves.

Voice actor Jay Britton, a British voice actor known for Divinity: Origin Sin II, expressed his concerns on Twitter at the time.

If this is true, this is just heartbreaking. Yes, AI might be able to replace things but should it? We literally get to decide.

Some replies shared Britton’s concerns while others said that such technology is inevitable. Natalie WInter, another British voice actor known for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, also believes it is likely to happen.

It is sad to think that if AI voices become good enough to be widely used, then those opportunities will decrease again.” Natalie Winter, Input Mag.

Yet is the replacement of voice actors with AI voices inevitable? It is said the greater the voice actor’s work, the easier it is to replicate that voice. Yet the voice actors with the most work are the ones that have accumulated a following that buys games specifically to support their work. So would fans let the replacement of their favourite voice actors slide? Or can we see technology taking over like many sci-fi worlds depict?

With over half the year gone already, we thought we would take a look at our favourite top 5 games so far! 

5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D

Having originally being released on the Nintendo 64 in 2000, Nintendo decided to release, one of the strangest Zelda titles to say the least, on Nintendo 3DS. The game takes Link out of the better known Hyrule and strands him in the strangle lands of Termina, a dark twisted universe. In this time-travel themed game, Link has three days to try and stop the moon from falling and, in that case, burning the world. Although Princess Zelda makes only a slight appearance during a flashback, this fantastic N64 game have been remastered to perfection for Nintendo 3DS users and comes in at number 5 in our top 5 games of 2015 so far.

4. Splatoon 

The Wii U haven’t had too many games to boast this year but we’ve given there hit Splatoon number four in our list. A light-hearted ‘Battlefield’, Splatoon redefines the genre of shooters taking away realistic violence and bringing some good ole’ innocent fun, whilst swapping blood and bullets for ink. The atmosphere of the game is uplifting, and although it is primarily a multiplayer title, the single-player mode is brilliant fun. Splatoon is packed with charm, plays like a dream whilst suitable for all ages, bringing a new experience to the shooting genre.

3. Lego Jurassic World

Lego games are always good fun and Lego Jurassic World is no different. We’ve enjoyed it so much its managed to take the third spot in our top 5 games so far. Along with the recent release of the hit new film in the iconic series, Jurassic World, this game also follows the epic storyline of the three previous Jurassic Park films, giving the user plenty to do. As well as playing through the films, you can spend hours going off story and exploring the well-designed open islands, finding all the little secrets and hidden areas on the way. The addition of being able to play as a dinosaur makes the experience even better. The producers have delivered on the nostalgia, along with adding a comical side to the story, and all in all creating a game that us lot down here have enjoyed very much!

2. Batman: Arkham Knight

Been out less than a week and it slots straight in to number two, one of the most highly anticipated games of the year has without doubt lived up to the hype. Rocksteady Studios along with Warner Bros. have produced a near-flawless game, which I have no doubt will be in a lot of people’s top ten list when they sit down at the end of the year. The previous Batman games were brilliant and they’ve only gone and done it again, with the addition of the Batmobile and a larger city to explore, the producers have created a stunning game in terms of both gameplay and the visuals. Flying around Gotham, coming up against the well-known super villains such as The Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, whilst teaming up with Robin, Nightwing and Catwomen; giving the gamer a superb experience.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

There was only one game that was going to take our top spot and it has to be The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Let alone 2015, its one of the best games we’ve seen and played in a long time. It defines the RPG genre and the developers down at CD Projeck Red have produced one of the most convincing fantasy open-worlds, full of quests and land to explore; be it run, sail or ride. CD Projeck Red are putting out a free DLC each week to give the gamer consistency something new to sink their teeth into, as well as two massive expansions expected later in the year. The storyline is amazing to say the least, put together with the gameplay system and ridiculous (in a good way) graphics, this is as good as it gets and I’m sure will be competing for top spot come the end of the year. Kudos CD Projeck Red, Kudos!

A new quest will be available for users to download in this weeks latest free DLC. 

CD Projekt Red have confirmed via The Witcher’s twitter page that this weeks free DLC will be a new quest called “Where The Cat And Wolf Play”. CD Projekt Red is adding a total of 16 free pieces of DLC to the game, as well as two expansions expected to come later in the year.

Bandai Namco – In at No.1

For the first time in the publisher’s history, they have been given the spot of No.1 Publisher in the UK. Go Bandai!

Last month, Bandai Namco was the UK’s most successful games publisher for the first time in the firm’s history!

GfK Chart-Track data has shown that almost 25 per cent of all the boxed games, that were sold last month, were from the publisher.

When looking at revenue, Bandai Namco accounted for an absolutely staggering 36.6 per cent of the software market!

The reason for this chart topping news was that the firm had the two biggest games out in May – The Witcher 3 and Project CARS.

“It’s been a very positive start to 2015 for Bandai Namco, especially in our EMEA and Australiasian territories,” said the publisher’s VP for Northern Europe, John Galloway.

“With the successful launch of our first new-gen and PC titles – Dragon Ball Xenoverse, the astonishing Project CARS and the record-breaking The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – we continue to demonstrate our key publishing and distribution strengths. The teams have worked hard with our internal studios, PR, marketing and retail partners to deliver stand-out campaigns.”

“We will soon be releasing F1 2015, working with Codemasters, and will continue our strong year with group titles such as J-Stars Victory Vs+, Godzilla, One Piece Pirate Warriors 3, Tales of Zesteria and Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, and continue to work with partners to support
our mascot Pac-Man and his 35th anniversary this year.”

PlayStation Poland has released a pretty funny new video which is based around The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The video sees the hero of the game, Geralt, take on a new quest. This time, he’s not slaying any enemies or chasing mythical creatures, oh no… he’s off to buy the “world’s most powerful console”! “You never know what order can happen at witcher trail,” is a line from the video’s description. “The most important thing is to have the strongest possible equipment.”

The Witcher Battle Arena

Coming to the Android and iOS this week!

The Witcher Battle Arena is an online multiplayer game from Fuero Games and CD Projekt Red, which will be released this week on Thursday 22nd January for the iOS & Android. CD Projekt Red announced this yesterday. 

The game is a free-to-play MOBA co-developed by Fuero Games and CD Projekt Red, which is set in the universe of Andrzej Sapkowski’s famed fantasy stories, The Witcher Battle Arena. Players are able to control Witcher characters such as Zoltan, Philippa and Saskia, and the average match is suited to the mobile device’s space, lasting 10 minutes.

The developers have made it clear that they designed the game without any “pay-to-win” elements, so that everything within the game-play can be unlocked free of charge! They also added that there may be a possibility that this title could come to computers in the future.

More information will follow, as and when we hear, and the next game in The Witcher franchise, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, will be made available on PS4, Xbox One and PC on 19th May 2015.
