Comrade Australia? FINALLY, some good industry news!

Was not expecting a progressive move in the gaming industry coming from the country notorious for banning and overly-censoring its fair share of 18+ games, but hey, you win some you lose some.

Game Workers Unite Australia, formerly an advisory and support group, has now announced it will be forming a proper union as of 2021. Game Workers Unite Australia has also partnered up with Professionals Australia (an umbrella union also covering scientists and non-gaming related workers).

Now, the GWUA is now officially part of the international GWU movement, which was endorsed by Bernie Sanders during his election campaign. Considering the rise of issues in the gaming industry becoming progressively more recognized and discussed, Australia’s new union will hopefully be a step in the right direction for giving workers the ability to fight back against workplace abuse. Again, not to put too fine a point, but there’s a reason why a certain “Bobbert Kotique” and other similarly rich CEOs generally aren’t big on the idea of employees having a say in holding company individuals accountable.

A couple days ago, Game Workers Unite posted an announcement which covers its GWU Australia policies, how it will work as a sub-division of Professionals Australia and a ‘tiered membership package just for game workers’. There is currently no confirmed timeframe for launch, but plans for official recognition are being arranged.

The announcement also promises the following:

• ‘Access to support, services and solidarity that will help you at your workplace’.
• ‘Take legal action to defend our members against underpayments, discrimination and bullying’ and ‘organise collective agreements at workplaces’.
• ‘Lobby governments and industry on an equal playing field with studio owners and publishers’.
• Continuing to provide the free advisory benefits it has been running up until now, even after becoming officially recognized as a worker’s union.

Game Workers Unite Australia currently provides support to people working in various game industry roles, including game developers, journalists, streamers, game marketing and PR, community managers, and pro players.

Xbox are back at it again with creating different products inspired by their latest console

Xbox Australia and New Zealand teamed up with luggage company July to create a suitcase that is inspired by the Xbox Series S.

It looks exactly like the console and includes the black, circular vent that DJ Khaled confused it to be for a speaker.

The Xbox Suitcase

The Xbox Suitcase was sent to a number of Australian influencers to help promote the release of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator, an amateur flight simulator developed by Asobo Studio and published by Xbox Game Studios, which is now available on the Xbox Series X/S. The suitcase came with their Gamertag on the back, an Xbox Series S console, a portable monitor, and a controller included.

The company is also holding a Twitter competition to give one away, however, it is open to Australia and New Zealand only.

This is similar to their other promotional item, the Xbox Fridge, which started out as a meme and is now going to be officially sold by the end of this year.

Unfortunately, the suitcase isn’t being sold to the public (for now at least) so we will all have to stick to normal suitcases for now.

Castlevania keeps staying in the news recently. After the latest announcement of the Netflix adaptation getting a spin-off series to follow on the success of the original show, it has now been hinted that a newly revised collection of the original Game Boy Advance games could be released in the near future.

The Castlevania Advance Collection has yet to be announced by its makers Konami, however, the unannounced collection was rated by the Australian Classification Board on June 18, receiving the ‘M’ rating for its fantasy violence.

The Castlevania Advance Collection is composed of three games that been critically acclaimed all around, with each game scoring 91 on Metacritic. Like most games in the Castlevania franchise, they are action-adventure gothic horror video games revolving around vampire hunters set to take down Count Dracula and his minions.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was released in 2001, set in 1830, and follows the protagonist Nathan Graves, who’s following the footsteps of his deceased parents and his mentor Morris Baldwin take on Dracula. Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance followed next in 2002. It is set in 1748 and follows Simon Belmont’s descendant Juste Belmont, who is trying to save his kidnapped friend Lydie from Dracula’s castle. The final game, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, took on a less conventional setting. Released in 2003, this Castlevania game is set in 2035 and follows teenager Soma Cruz who has occult powers.

These Game Boy Advance games have only been re-released singularly before on the Wii U console back in 2015, making this Castlevania Advance Collection a rare treat indeed.

Konami has previously released other Castlevania collections; the Castlevania Anniversary Collection was released in 2019 and featured eight older Castlevania games that were originally released on consoles such as NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Mega Drive. It has also released other themed compilations of its retro classics, such as Contra Anniversary Collection and Anniversary Collection: Arcade Classics, all of which can be found on Xbox One, PS4, Switch and PC.

Castlevania Advance Collection would be the fourth instalment of this series.
