Hit open-world quirky action-explorathon Saints Row has been confirmed for a reboot game in the works for some time. Now, we’ve got a full-on gameplay preview which you can see in full right here. Borrowing from the God of War school of reboot naming irks me something fierce though, like… Deep Silver. Honey. Baby. Sleet from the sill of the yuletide morn… Brand recognition is all well and good, but variety is the spice of life! Why not call it ‘Saints Row: Naughty n’ Nice’ or ‘Saints Row: Virtue City’? It’s either me roasting you for not coming up with a unique title or getting on the Zero Punctuation hitlist of the colon-gagging gag! Your choice!

The Saints Row remake has now been set to release August 23rd 2022, currently in development for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC.

What to expect: The game still maintains the Saints Row reputation for frankly oceanic levels of character customization! And if the excerpt of interrogating a rival gang member by locking him in a port-o-potty and dragging it along in your car while doing donuts (a circular driving movement) is anything to go by, Saints Row hasn’t lost it’s sense of humor either. Some of the combat skills are also immensely boner-inducing to me, including gun-fu (for real, y’all should see Equilibrium), flame punch (for real, y’all should see the Avatar Last Airbender TV show) and a wingsuit for fun aerial traversal… Can’t think of a movie tie-in for that, but Ruben Brandt Collector features hang-gliding at some point if memory serves me right, so close enough!

Have a butcher’s at one of the Twitter videos showcasing different skills for Saints Row here, but word to the wise, the captions from whoever’s running the Saints Row twitter are SUPREMELY cringe… So, I’m now going to spend the rest of this article roasting a game I’ve never played because someone’s gotta maintain some Hashtag Artistic Freedom up in here… Is what I would say, but I was hit with an unexpected inspiration-rush for the product poems, so you get off on a technicality for now Saints Row!

Forspoken is an upcoming action-adventure fantasy wherein you get the isekai treatment and “have” to find your way back to reality (oop, there goes gravity). It’s being developed by the folks at Luminous Productions, published by Square Enix.

Forspoken is currently set to release ‘early in 2022’, which is great to hear, considering the PS5 games library essentially just consists of the PS4 library, plus Returnal and Ratchet and Clank! Forspoken was initially announced under the working title ‘Project Athia’ in 2020 and is set to be the first non Final Fantasy IP from Square Enix in a long time. And when I say long, I don’t mean “long”, I mean 🎵LONG LOOOOOOOOOOOONG LOoooOOOoooNG🎵, followed by sensual trumpeting… It makes sense in context!

Forspoken has a very talented team behind it by the looks of things. Amy Hennig, head writer behind the Uncharted series, will be collaborating with Gary Whitta (Screenwriter for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The music composers for the game (Bear McCreary and Garry Schymann) are also behind the scores for God of War and Bioshock… Also, feel free to have a butcher’s round our store if you want to get The Bioshock Collection! Ella Balinksa, playing Frey, has also played in Charlie’s Angels and is confirmed to play a starring role in the upcoming 2022 show ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to New Raccoon City’.

Compared to the previous trailers and gameplay V-Slices, this current gameplay is… Substantially less aesthetically pleasing, to put it mildly. But at the same time, I’m also a firm believer in ‘I’m not ugly, I just reduce graphics to improve performance’, so who am I to judge? Besides the looks department (which, outside of this current footage, looks smooth as a marble scultpure of Bloodsport-era Van-Damme’s booty), the traversal looks suitably fast-paced and the combat magic suitably weighty. You could make the case that the player is actually so agile, that boss fights and healing in most cases may be too easy, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the late-game obstacles rise the difficulty curve.

Forspoken will be released for PC and PlayStation 5 on May 24, 2022. The game will be a PS5 console exclusive for approximately two years.

Gameplay for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League dropped at the 2021 Game Awards. We got a glimpse at gameplay for all four playable characters: King Shark, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot. The teaser begins with the Suicide Squad insulting the Flash by referring to him as the Justice League’s mascot, before cutting to a gameplay montage filled with intense combat. Here’s a look at the trailer:

What to Expect in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

The conflict took place in the heart of the city, and it included the kind of chaotic combat you’d expect from the Suicide Squad. We witnessed footage of King Shark climbing buildings, engaging in lightning fast physical combat with his fists, and, quite gruesomely, biting off an enemies head.

Harley Quinn swung in the air with what appeared to be a grapple, then she swung her baseball bat from the ground to take out enemies. We saw some third-person shooter action in Deadshot. From the looks of what we saw, every character has a good mix of ranged and close-combat options. The game looks more like a third-person shooter than it does a superhero – well villain, in this case – game, but maybe it will feel different in the whole game.

Suicide Squad was first announced in 2020. It will be Rocksteady’s first game after the Batman Arkham series, and is set in the same universe.  Up to four players will be able to control the game’s antiheroes.

No specific release date has been given at this time for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but  the game is expected to release  in 2022 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Between this and Vaatividya’s coining of “s’horsery”, fingers crossed that 2021 becomes the year of mish-mashing random words with sorcery! Find the Swordcery trailer here.

The game is being helmed by Don Thurakichprempri and Mike Henriet, animators on the 2018 God of War reboot. Both have expressed desire to work on a game with full creative control, hence Swordcery, which was inspired by dream of Thurakichprempri about a knight using a giant pizza cutter as a weapon.

Swordcery is an action Roguelike, meaning that the majority of in-game locations will be procedurally generated. The player character will have access to “hundreds” of swords. The plot so far goes thusly:

A giant blade plunges into a mountain range, stealing the Earth’s power as smaller blades start raining down like in that episode of Adventure Time! You play as Colt, basically your standard Hero’s Journey 101 bloke who’s an unassuming hero that takes the call to action upon realizing he can control the raining swords! Taking some inspiration from Hades (psst! which we have), the game has a light permadeath mechanic, meaning that with every death, you get booted back to the beginning and have to work your way back up to where you were before (though Swordcery does let players keep any credits and permanent upgrades).

As for gameplay? The collectible in-game swords fall into multiple class types, the main ones being Titan Sword, Katana, and Dual Swords. Each weapon type has access to unique light combos and a single specialized heavy attack. As the game’s title would imply, the Swordcery magic system also means each sword has a unique magic power. These powers can include a boomerang throw that would impress Sokka, summoning a bolt of lightning that would make Zeus blush and unleashing portals of fire and brimstone onto unsuspecting foes if you’re in a more biblical mood! And as far as applicability to the Christmas season goes, you can even summon a ring of protective snowflakes to deck the halls (as well as your enemies) in the face!

DETAILS! They are important: The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a first-person investigative game that just came to Nintendo Switch. The story sees you play as Nicole, a teenager who discovers her father had an affair with the titular Rachel Foster, who committed suicide shortly after discovering he was pregnant. After Nicole’s parents’ deaths, she/you go out to attempt to sell the hotel they owned while trying to make amends with Rachel Foster’s family. The powers that be result in you being temporarily stranded in the hotel and having to communicate with a FEMA Agent through the phone while waiting for everything to blow over and exploring the lay of the land available to you, uncovering deeper mysteries.

Overall, Rachel Foster seems very intriguing and I like the aesthetic, the developers definitely took some inspiration from The Shining visually speaking. I mean, troubled familial relations and an abandoned hotel is a pretty oddly specific bread and butter. I myself have a particular penchant for video games that mix up a good story with the gameplay, so good on the devs at One O One Games, Reddoll Games and 101% for playing a part in adding to the fact that video games can explore serious topics with nuance.

Speaking of nuanced stories in games, if you can’t get either of them yourself, I recommend checking out the letsplays of Valiant Hearts and Papers Please by Irish Shoutyman Extraordinaire Jacksepticeye: Valiant Hearts follows various character perspectives struggling during WWI based on real-life letters from a German soldier, a French prisoner, a Belgian nurse, a failed English pilot and more. Papers Please sees you play as a border security guard in charge of checking passports for discrepancies, loosely inspired by events relating to the fall of the Berlin wall. Various choices have different impacts on characters and endings you can get, so choose wisely.

As for the bi-weekly YouTuber non-sponsored shillfest extravaganza, if you want an unlikely crossover of epic proportions, Jacob Geller’s ‘Dark Souls 3 is Thinking of Ending Things’ is a suitably peculiar piece that explores parallels between Dark Souls 3 by FromSoftware and the hit psychological drama Netflix film ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’, so hopefully the vendiagram of fans between both of those things stumble on this video.
