You hear that everyone? Superman himself is behind the idea of him starring in a Mass Effect series. That’s all you need to hear. Now get it into production right away.

In all seriousness, if Henry Cavill is genuinely interested in playing a main role in the rumoured series, then why not? His name has been associated with the project ever since he teased it earlier this year. We already know how much he enjoys gaming, so it should come as no surprise he wants to star in yet another brilliant gaming franchise. His Witcher series has been a monumental success, and we cannot wait for season 2!

Speaking to GameRadar, Cavill stated this in regards to joining the project: “Very much so, yeah, all depending on how they’re executing it. The world of adaptation can be heavy or light. When I like a product, I prefer the adaptation to be less changed from the source, so it all depends.”

Referring to the reported Amazon deal, Cavill added: “”I think it’s found a home, hasn’t it? If [it] finds a home, I would love to have a conversation.”

As many other fans, Cavill main love for the franchise is the original Mass Effect trilogy.

“I did not play Andromeda – I had a go at it, but ended up being very busy. But [the original trilogy]? Yeah. Loved it. Brilliant games. It would make such a magnificent series of movies or TV shows.”

Deadline reported last month that Amazon Studios, which is responsible for creating original content for Amazon Prime Video, was “nearing a deal” to develop a series based on EA’s best-selling sci-fi franchise.

However, not everyone is excited for the potential of a series based on the beloved series. Former lead writer on another Bioware game, David Gaider, had this to say on the matter.

“I’m relieved to see that the Mass Effect / Amazon deal is for a potential TV series and not a movie,” Gaider said. “Even so, the possibility (and likewise for Dragon Age) makes me cringe just a little, unlike many fans who appear… excited?

“For starters, Mass Effect and Dragon Age have a custom protagonist, meaning said TV show will need to pick whether said protagonist will be male or female. Boom, right off the bat you’ve just alienated a whole bunch of the built-in fan base who had their hopes up”.

Since 2007, the Mass Effect series has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon within the gaming world. The original trilogy was greeted with both critical and commercial success. The focus of this praise was put on the games’ narrative, characters, voice acting and world building. Could this all be translated over into a television show? Clearly one former Bioware writer thinks not.

David Gaider was the lead writer on another Bioware franchise, the Dragon Age series. Unfortunately, he left his position at the company in 2016, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot to say about his former employers. Speaking on Twitter, he addressed recent rumours that Amazon Studios are in the process of gathering the rights to a Mass Effect TV series. This is what he had to say upon the matter:

Of course, this is a very good starting point from the lead writer. Alienating your fan base before your show has even started is a dangerous approach, especially with a franchise as revered as this.

Mass Effect TV Show: Doomed To Failure?

David Gaider had a lot to say upon the situation, showing he clearly feels passionate about his former company. In regards to the series protagonist, he evidently had a lot more to discuss than just their gender.

“Secondly, those protagonists are designed to be a bit of a blank slate, one that the player fills out with their decisions. That’s not going to work for a passive medium. So, suddenly, the protagonist will have their own personality, and their own story. That will be weird”.

“You think I’m wrong? Consider just how much of the story is off-loaded onto the companions. They are the cyphers through which the player gets most of their emotional engagement from. On their own, the Dragon Age and Mass Effect protagonists are… well, pretty boring. That’s not going to fly”.

Once again, David makes an extremely valid point. Part of the the franchises intrigue is that we get to grow alongside these characters, who are essentially ourselves transformed into the game. Not only this, but the characters our protagonists meet on their adventures have become iconic parts of the series. Obviously, David has his concerns about how they will be handled.

“And think of those companions. Think of how much the fanbase is attached to them. Now consider the fact that there is no way in hell any single story could encompass them all equally. Think of the howls of rage when companion X is relegated to a cameo, or not there at all”.

“Having a TV show instead of a movie allows for more companion options, sure, but consider your own playthrough: only a handful of them had any meaningful presence in a single game. That will need to be the case for this story, to maintain coherence. A few companions, one romance”.

David Believes The Plot Doesn’t Make For Good TV Viewing

As previously mentioned, the side characters are very much important components of the franchise for fans. The likes of Mordin Solus, Urdnot Wrex and Thane Krios serve as great companions for our protagonist to bounce off. As such, David believes their lack of screen time could expose the series’ pretty generic plot.

“Those plots had to take into account the player’s agency. They were kind of the shell upon which that player’s emotional engagement was delivered – usually through the companions and the choices themselves. Choice heightened engagement. Interactivity was the star, not the plot.

“Take all that out, lose most of the companions, and you potentially end up with a pretty run-of-the-mill fantasy or science-fiction show, one where a lot of the built-in audience has possibly been turned into outraged, howling malcontents before it’s even released.

“All that is, of course, if the Dragon Age or Mass Effect series is mishandled. I can think of any number of ways it could be done better, but that involves doing more than a strict adaptation, and that comes with its own complications”.

Despite all this, David does still wish the best for the show, even though it may come off as quite sarcastic.

“Anyhow, good luck to the showrunners. They’ll need it.”

The Original Mass Effect was released back in 2007, and told the story of Commander Shepard. A story that would go on to span 3 games, with your choices from each game carrying over from one to the next. A decade later, in 2017, Bioware followed up the series with mass effect: Andromeda which… was not so well received.

Today, a report from deadline has suggested that the series may be getting a tv adaptation through amazon studios.

This is no-doubt coming off the heels of Netflix adapting League of Legends as “Arcane”. Amazon studios seems hell bent on taking a crack at adapting mass effect to a wider audience. As of right now, neither Amazon or EA have actually agreed to the project, but the report from deadline does suggest a deal could come about in the not too distant future.

As of right now what this series will be is unclear. Its possible that this could be an original story set within the universe of mass effect, which would probably be for the better in my opinion, or this could be a film or TV adaptation of the mass effect games. A film was in production briefly in 2010, being produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary studios, best known for the recent Godzilla films and pacific rim. 

Despite interest in adapting the story of the game, I personally feel it wouldnt work. Mass effect is all about the choice aspect. Everyones playthrough is different, with everyone choosing different relationships and places to go. Unless it was A “bandersnatch” choose your own adventure type situation, the preferable option is to do a story set within the world, but not a direct adaptation.

EA and Bioware have recently been teasing a potential new game in the series, this one set back within the milky way galaxy and set centuries after the end of mass effect three. While right now this is little more than rumour, the next few years may prove to be a bit of a renaissance for mass effect fans.

This cosplay is certain to turn a few heads!

Now this is nothing short of uncanny! Freshly discovered Commander Shepard cosplay has come from the visual artist, Freya Willia. It’s nothing like anyone has ever seen in the world of cosplay, and you can see a series of photos on Willia’s Facebook page. The costume took her a total of two years to make but, judging by these photos, it was time extremely well spent!

MCM Comic Con Midlands 2015

Go2Games’ first ever Comic Con and the first of many to come this year! Here’s the low-down!

Saturday 14th February 2015 marked Go2Games’ first ever MCM Comic Con, which was held in the Midlands at the International Centre, Telford. We arrived on Thursday evening and stayed in an incredible secluded cottage/mansion, which our team thoroughly enjoyed. It also felt like we were a part of a horror film whenever nightfall came, which was an added bonus!

Friday was set-up day and we spent the afternoon/evening erecting our grand, inflatable tent, our fantastic banner and filling the tent with all of our goodies ready for the following morning, whilst our lovely photographers (Patrick and Joe) filmed the whole process! Here’s a look at our tent on set-up day. Pardon the bags and boxes; we were still unpacking and setting up our lovely merchandise!

Saturday morning gave an early start to the team as we arrived back at the venue, just before 8am, to give the finishing touches to our tent, merchandise, and costumes! An hour later saw one of the longest queues that I’ve probably ever seen, which was filled with such incredible cosplayers, all aching to get in to the nerve centre! Here are a few recognisable characters that I met along the way…

I was also ecstatic to meet some of my own kind along the way, and right outside our big old tent too! Does anyone recognise this marvellous man below too?…

I was very lucky to have a photo with Mark Meer, who voices the character Commander Shepard from the extremely popular franchise – Mass Effect. What a lovely guy he is too!

The whole day went extremely well. Excellent cosplay (the winners of the Cosplay Masquerade are featured at the very top of this piece), brilliant atmosphere, great customers and we all very much felt at home and in our element being surrounded by such wonderfully outrageous characters! As you can see, our tent was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Even the Star Wars clan!…

A brilliant day was had by all and we celebrated with a lovely meal made by our colleague Sam and toasted to our success! 

These morph suits, which we sell and have been modelled by the Dark Lord (Spiderman) and myself (Deadpool), sparked a lot of social interest…

Even Jean Luc Picard came along with us and gave us a helping hand. His forte is clearly cooking and he swiftly became our head chef for the stay…

I also, as per usual, managed to get myself into a spot of bother whilst doing the rounds…
