What the hell is a Gex?

Gex. We all remember Gex right? No. no you dont. No-one remembers gex. It was a series of 3D platformers on the 3DO, PSX and the Sega Saturn, and given no-one remembers Gex, I highly doubt anyone remembers the Sega Saturn or, more so, the 3DO.

Gex was about a lizard called Gex, who was obsessed with TV and one day gets sucked into TV land… I think. Look I have never actually played Gex, I have 2 and 3 Ripped and ready to emulate in Duckstation, and the original is available on PC through GOG but I just haven’t gotten around to them yet. They are notoriously dated, relying on pop culture references for their humor and so haven’t aged as cleanly as other 3d platformers of the Era.

Gex Jr, AKA the Son of Gex

In any case, the reason we bring up Gex today is that people have discovered a demo for a previously unannounced and unknown Gex game, Gex Jr. The demo is available on archive.org and can be run in any PSX emulator (although how well it will run is questionable, this is an unreleased demo that we where never meant to have). A playthrough has also been posted to youtube by Justz00t.

According to the user who originally posted the demo, it was found on a CD-R dated to around January 2001. This probably never came out because… 2001 the PS2 was kicking off an interest in the PSX was dying off. Plus, the Gex franchise was never too successful anyway.

And it sure is more Gex. More dated pop culture references, including “I am your father, Luke”, and many more across the short 31 seconds of gameplay.

As of last year, the rights to the Gex series in European territories where re-acquired by Square-Enix, although what will come of this, if anything, is yet to be seen. And being real, do we really want more Gex? The games are pretty good but even if there is a new game that uses more up-to-date pop culture references… in 10 years time those will just be as dated as the ones in the original.

Everything changed when the PlayStation nation attacked

On December 3, 1994, Sony made video gaming history by introducing the first PlayStation to Japan.

I might not have been born until 4 years later, but I can certainly write about the impact the PS1 has had within the gaming community, as well as my own life.

PlayStation 1

When the first PlayStation came out, it was ahead of its time. The sound and 32-bit graphics were considered cutting-edge technology at the time, as well as the CD-drive based games, compared to the cartridge-based ones from Sony’s competitors such as Nintendo.

It’s actually thanks to a failed partnership between Sony and Nintendo that the PlayStation exists. The two technological giants had plans to produce their own CD-based console, yet the deal fell through and the two companies made their own version- Nintendo with its CD drive attached to the SNES that never hit the market, and Sony with what we now know as the PS1.

The PlayStation became an instant hit in Japan, with a buzz amongst the older generation of gamers as well as the current. It even lured publishers like Square Enix away from Nintendo, with its Final Fantasy series. The console continued to be successful when it reached the rest of the world in 1995 and 10 years later, the PS1 became the first console to reach 100 million copies sold.

Source: Castlevania Symphony of the NIght

The PS1 was only just the beginning of the PlayStation console family, along with the franchises that debuted on it. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tomb Raider, Tekken, and Resident Evil are just some of the franchises that started out on the PS1 that have gone on to receive sequels, spin-offs, merchandise, and even adaptations. Other games such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid became fan-favourites and pushed the limits for both series, as well as inspiration for the games in their genres.

The PS1’s existence just goes to show that when your original plan fails, don’t give up. You might just start a revolutionary console family along the way.

Earlier this year, PlayStation teased us with plans to announce a “big remake” around this coming Christmas. New information released implying it may well be a remake of the Square Enix title Chrono Cross.

A Brief History on The Chrono Series: These games are a JRPG (Japanese Roleplaying Game) series set in a world of fantasy, magic, turn-based action and well-written stories. The most famous of the games is arguably the first, Chrono Trigger, which included art design by Akira Toriyama (mangaka behind the Dragonball series and Dr Slump). The Jeremy Jahns review of Chrono Trigger is a great one.

Jeremy Jahns comparing the combat systems between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross

What’s the news? I’m so glad I asked! On a podcast episode with the lads at XboxEra, Nick Baker claimed the “big remake” mentioned by folk singer Éabha McMahon is indeed a remaster of the sequel/spin-off to Chrono Trigger from the original PlayStation era. Baker also claimed the project will be accessible across multiple consoles- THANK GOD! To paraphrase Ben Crowshaw on the topic, “console exclusivity isn’t about making a good game, it’s holding a good game hostage from everyone else”!

A Chrono Cross Remaster was also teased in the Nvidia leak of this September.

Chrono Cross hasn’t received as much love as Chrono Trigger in terms of getting ported to as many consoles, currently only playable via physical copies on a PS1 or 2, or via PS1 Classics on PS3, PSP and Vita.

Product Poems!

Chronos before ashes, a God. A God before ashes? A thought.

Dark pictures, a thousand words unseen, masquerade and mock mankind.

Damnit, why didn’t I come up with those ones on Halloween? Can’t be too mad though, pretty sure sharing these poems out of context will land me some #Deep clout on the gram!

PlayStation 20th Anniversary Dualshock 4 standalone will be made available this September 2015

PlayStation Europe have confirmed the release of the 20th Anniversary Dualshock 4 controller standalone, and that it will be available to purchase this September.

The controller, which has been made to look like the PS1, was originally released as a limited edition console bundle. A North American release has not yet been given, but it is due to come out across Europe in September.

However, unlike the controllers in the PS4 bundle, the Touchpad will feature its normal dots, instead of the iconic PlayStation button shapes. Only 12,300 20th Anniversary consoles were produced, originally, and the online auction for the very first one went roughly at about $129,000.

The whole idea of this limited edition release, in December 2014, was to celebrate 20 years since the first PlayStation launch back in 1994 in Japan. Needless to say, units sold out in a matter of minutes!
