Launching April 20 on the Epic Game Store, a new co-op RPG blending old-school cartoon visuals with modern dungeon-crawling action.

Described by developer Beamdog as a first person swords and sorcery adventure, Mythicforce is a roguelike dungeon-crawling experience set within the world of an 80s fantasy cartoon. The game seeks to capture the look, sound, and ambience from a number of 80s cartoon favourites in the genre. It’s easy to see a lot of inspiration taken from the Dungeons & Dragons’ animated outing, as well as the arcade cult-classic Dragon’s Lair. The game seems to be doing an admirable job bringing together it’s inspirations in a colourful and high energy action game, rendered fully in 3D.

Mythforce

In Mythforce, you play as the titular crew of hunters, mages and rogues who team up to face down an evil force that’s taken over the land. The experience will see up to four players, cooperatively adventuring first-person in the role of either: Victoria the valiant Knight, Rico the charming Rogue, Maggie the wise Mage, and Hawkins the deadly Hunter. Their objective, to storm a colourful cartoon castle packed with “treasure, traps, and terrors”.

The game’s four characters each have their own distinctive class, featuring the vast array of spells and abilities fans of fantasy RPG’s have come to expect. All packaged within frantic first-person Co-op action, reminicent of games like like Warhammer: Vermintide, or Left 4 Dead. Mythforce’s rogue-lite structure means adventurers will be forced back to the start on death, with the castle reconfiguring itself on every attempt. All won’t be lost, however, as players are able to use a “meta-progression system” to level up between runs.

Beamdog is opting to go the early access route with Mythforce, the initial release including the afformentioned four playable heroes and its first episode, Bastion of the Beastlord. But the devloper promises new weapons and enemies are to be added as development continues. The game is expected to remain in early access for around a year, with major content patches introducing the likes of new episodes and other “heftier” features, arriving “every few months”.

Beamdog’s aquisition

Behind the scenes, the games developer Beamdog have recently been aquired by publisher Aspyr Media. Aspyr is best known for its Star Wars remasters and will take on the task of publishing Mythforce. The publisher claimed Beamdog will operate as an “independent studio” within Aspyr. In an interview, Aspyr CEO Ted Staloch said that “we look forward to seeing them realize their ambition with Mythforce while maximizing the long-term potential of an incredible archive of classic games.”. This news might suggest down the road, Beamdog could be tasked with more legacy projects as well. Beamdog has the experience, having made modern enhanced editions of two Baldur’s Gate games, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights and more. Their experience with these titles, was further bolstered by the fact that BioWare co-founder Trent Oster was also a co-founder of Beamdog. Not the first major name from the company to seek new horizons.

For more news and updates on Mythforce, be sure to check out it’s page on the Epic Games store, where it will release exclusively for PC on April 20. However, there are plans in the future for a release on consoles as well.

Golden light is weird. Really weird. Its an action-survival horror Roguelike about fighting meat. You can pick up and throw things (or eat them). The game is mostly inspired by the popular prophunt game mode most commonly associated with Garry’s Mod.

In golden light you descend gradually through a flesh construct called the gut, which fuses Silent hill with a canibalistic nightmare.

You can now experience the game in its complete form, with it just having launched in version 1.0. Its currently 30% off on steam as a lunch discount, and can be purchased as part of 1 of 2 bundles. The “go to hell” bundle also contains ULTRAKILL, one of the best FPS Games ever made, a slick stylish action game made of equel parts Devil may Cry and Quake. The Taste of Maddness bundle Packages the game with Cruelty Squad, an eye bleeding nightmare Immersive sim which, and your going to need to trust me on this because no amount of explanation can actually show this without you having played the game, is one of last years best and most interesting video games.

Between this and Vaatividya’s coining of “s’horsery”, fingers crossed that 2021 becomes the year of mish-mashing random words with sorcery! Find the Swordcery trailer here.

The game is being helmed by Don Thurakichprempri and Mike Henriet, animators on the 2018 God of War reboot. Both have expressed desire to work on a game with full creative control, hence Swordcery, which was inspired by dream of Thurakichprempri about a knight using a giant pizza cutter as a weapon.

Swordcery is an action Roguelike, meaning that the majority of in-game locations will be procedurally generated. The player character will have access to “hundreds” of swords. The plot so far goes thusly:

A giant blade plunges into a mountain range, stealing the Earth’s power as smaller blades start raining down like in that episode of Adventure Time! You play as Colt, basically your standard Hero’s Journey 101 bloke who’s an unassuming hero that takes the call to action upon realizing he can control the raining swords! Taking some inspiration from Hades (psst! which we have), the game has a light permadeath mechanic, meaning that with every death, you get booted back to the beginning and have to work your way back up to where you were before (though Swordcery does let players keep any credits and permanent upgrades).

As for gameplay? The collectible in-game swords fall into multiple class types, the main ones being Titan Sword, Katana, and Dual Swords. Each weapon type has access to unique light combos and a single specialized heavy attack. As the game’s title would imply, the Swordcery magic system also means each sword has a unique magic power. These powers can include a boomerang throw that would impress Sokka, summoning a bolt of lightning that would make Zeus blush and unleashing portals of fire and brimstone onto unsuspecting foes if you’re in a more biblical mood! And as far as applicability to the Christmas season goes, you can even summon a ring of protective snowflakes to deck the halls (as well as your enemies) in the face!

What is Cult of The Lamb?

Cult of the Lamb is hard to describe, Digital Devolver – the developers of Cult of The Lamb have put this game in the category of action, adventure, Indie and Strategy, however, this game has also been described as action – roguelike or a dungeon crawler type of game.

The story follows a lamb who is offered as a sacrifice for the humans, the lamb receives a dark power upon death that saves them, they come back to life and kill all the humans and free his fellow animal friends. In order to pay the debt of their life being saved from the dark entity that gave them the power, they must create a civilisation that worships his name.

Now, all animals begin to worship this lamb and consumed by his greed for power, he starts a cult and goes around killing demons, monsters, building statues, buildings and the like, destroying any trace of the non-believers. As described by the developers themselves “Start your own cult in a land of false prophets, venturing out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland worshippers and spread your Word to become the one true cult.”

Cult of The Lamb is one of those games where you can sit back and enjoy the seriousness without feeling bad about it because it’s based around cute animals. Not only that, but this game includes amazing, 2D combat that feels almost alive. This beautifully drawn world is so adorably dark and quirky that fans are asking for pre-orders.
