While my Feminism in Sifu video is still on the back burner and the costume releases are still some ways off, my creative juices are flowing like a 90’s rapper on prom night! So, here’s 5 more costumes that would be Objectively Awesome to see in Sifu!

Cobra Kai, Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang Gi: I know, Karate and Pak Mei… Mei not be the same thing! That said, Cobra Kai’s run on Netflix has been amazing and with a new season in the works, seeing your character rep for the swag of iconic Karate Kid dojos would be a fun extra!

Matrix Swagger: I touched on a couple cool jackets last time around, but needless to say, a black leather trench coat and sunglasses? Badass AND unisex!

Bloodsport Kumite Shorts: This one’s personal because I’m not the biggest fan of the new Mortal Kombat games switching Johnny Cage’s design from a Van-Damme rip-off to a Nathan Drake rip-off! Hashbrown Back At It Again With The Van Dammes!

Leroy Smith: The Wing-Chun BAMF of Tekken! And I’d be lying if I didn’t say Sifu didn’t feel like my own personal Ip Man simulator. And hey, if a character creator mode ends up being unfeasible, it’d be neat to see different skins on these different skins, if you know what I mean.

Pure unadulterated insanity: Besides my joking suggestion that Sloclap make a Wintergreen skin, I admit that sometimes it’s nice to have the odd joke-costume in some games. Something incredibly out of place and weird for the sake of abstract expressionist hilarity! Clowns, Santa costumes, Easter Bunny furry suits, TINY MINI SKIRTS? The world is your oyster Sloclap!

Sifu fans rejoice! The game’s official twitter confirmed that an exclusive Deluxe Edition outfit for the player will be added to the game’s first major update coming this May.

In addition, more outfits will be coming to the main game, even opening the flood gates by asking fans to share any ideas for what outfits to add! Needless to say, looks like Christmas is coming early for me, ain’t that right Wintergreen?

Like your cut G, but what do I want? I’m so glad I asked! Sure, there’s the obvious ones like John Wick, Ip Man, the Bruce Lee jumpsuit from Game of Death, but you know me, variety is indeed the spice of life. So, who else would be a good fit for Sifu?

Korra and Aang: As much of the costume suggestions are pretty male-centric, what better solution than a character who technically has ten thousand lifetimes-worth of men, ladies and enbies inside of them! And considering we’ve seen Aang at different ages throughout the series and comics, would be interesting to see gilf-Korra kicking names and taking ass.

You… Who me? Yeah, you! How are you gonna let the player choose their sex without throwing in a character customization mode? That’d be neat!

Shang Chi: For hopefully obvious reasons!

Sekiro: I mean, both games are about aging on death, feature a posture-bar system of combat and are about as hard to complete as last-minute cramming for an exam you didn’t revise for! Basically writes itself! Speaking of Sekiro, feel free to have a butcher’s at my video essay on the game!

The Mortal Kombat Method: In the event getting rights for some of these characters is too tricky, might I suggest the Mortal Kombat Method of having a standard legally-distinct Ninja suit and have various optional palette-swaps.

Jacob/Evie Frye from Assassin’s Creed: Maybe not the most period-accurate pair for the semi-contemporary setting of Sifu, but still an interesting choice for any fans hailing from “Lahn-dahn taaahn”.

And last but not least:  Epic Jackets! Because most of the time you’re playing Sifu, you’re usually only seeing the character’s back. So why not have a T-Birds leather jacket or an Akira one while you’re at it? Food for thought folks.

See? I like Apex Legends and that won’t stop me roasting it over the spit at the prison barbecue, I yearn for true glitch equality! Heck, one time I accidentally tried to heal a bloke who wasn’t my teammate and if that isn’t proof there’s a little glitch in all of us, I don’t know what is!

Cargo Catastrophe! A bug was recently found featuring Pathfinder that allows players to ‘super launch’ themselves when grappling cargo bots. This unintentional mechanic was uncovered by one Redditor ‘‘Dirty_Skirty‘, finding out that while these launches generally end up being enough atomic force to yeet you too far from the inner circle, it can be creatively applied to if you’re precise enough.

“If you jump the second your grapple attaches, you’re guaranteed a perfectly vertical launch”.

And if you’ll entertain a little anecdote of mine, that time I tried healing an enemy player? My teammate was a Pathfinder! Chances are they realized I was a massive noob after that mishap cut their losses before I started shooting myself in the proverbial digital foot any harder.

Glitch Fixes? To my knowledge, none as far as Pathfinder goes, but the folks at Respawn did recently fix a glitch with Bloodhound (whomst we stan).

Glitch Tales… No, not that one: So sit down and strap on for three peculiar tales of glitchy-gaming goodness from your’s truly! And lucky for me, all these issues were neatly fixed with a tap of the retry button.

First up is on one of my Grounded replays of The Last of Us some nebulous time in pre-demic era! There was a section with some bad guys out in the snow that I decided for a specific way to eliminate: Run out back, punch one down, use it as a distraction, run back, stealth two other blokes and unload my clips into the last few guys hunting me like the randy cinephile I am! As I kept dying near that last end of my strategy, needless to say, I was repeating stuff more than Bo Burnham’s song of the same name, so on one particularly attempt, I ran up to a bloke, clotheslined his ass, and immediately shot RIGHT DOWN THE GROUND like:

Next on the chopping block is Sifu: One time while fighting Kuroki and FINALLY getting past her first phase after hours of retries and fiddling with the photo mode, I punched her so hard that when she backflipped away from me, she clean disappeared from the arena on me! Like,it’s bad enough she looks like a literal ghost half the time, but getting left on read by a boss? You think you know a girl. Ain’t that right Sensei Lawrence?

Sifu happens to be the first ever game I’ve taken the risk of pre-ordering for, so needless to say, I’m glad that I have been getting a lot from the experience!

There are parts of the game I want to discuss in a (potentially) upcoming video essay, so consider this an introductory companion-piece. Part review, part shoving politics into my champagne!

Synopsis: Sifu is a Martial-Arts game on PlayStation 4, 5 and PC, developed by Sloclap. The story draws on old-school Kung-Fu and revenge action cinema like Kill Bill and Bruce Lee films. Your character’s sensei is slaughtered by 5 former students for unknown reasons. You’re also killed, but not before grasping a mystical medallion that brings you back to life! The rest of the game sees you uncovering the mystery of why your master was killed while also hunting the 5 ex students for some of that sweet sweet revengeance!

Gameplay Review: As is also the case with penises, rock candy, Dark Souls and supersized McDonalds meals in Illinois, it may be hard to get through, but feels amazing the more you take in! Based on Absolver‘s combat system, your character starts off with a fistful of combos, dodging techniques and counter-attacks. You also have a sweeping kick for channeling your inner John Kreese, plus a pushing punch which opens enemies up to dash-attacks or getting slammed into walls for damage.

The game has a good mixture of simple weaker enemies and stronger more defensive types. Most of the time, you can tell how quickly an enemy will go down based on their health and posture bar size, but spend too much time mashing at one grunt and you’ll get clocked by another enemy punch unless you dodge or counter in time. In addition, using the same couple of combos or ‘cheesing’ is a quick path to a game over screen, encouraging you to be mindful and really make you feel like you’ve earned your black belt status.

The death system is also well-implemented: Due to a permadeath mechanic, you can’t permanently unlock certain skills unless you purchase them multiple times with experience points from your past fights. I recommend specking into weapon durability and focus regains from dodging. The more you fill your focus bar, you can perform powerful strikes that are essential for damaging and stunning bosses.

Cool story bro, what about Sifu’s feminism? I’ll save the more specific parts on feminism in Sifu for the video (finished the first script draft last night), but until then, I will share a handful of takeaways, be it for good-faith readers or the “SJW’s want to ruin video games” crowd that will most definitely dub me ‘Manita Sarkeesian’ if this piece blows up on 4Chan or the like.

The Feminist Takeaway: Don’t talk about feminism, talk about feminisms! Sure, you’ve got your ‘men are trash’, ‘white woman’s instagram‘ and sex-negative schools of feminism, but on the other side of the coin, you have sex-positive, anti-racist and pro-LGBT+ forms of feminism.

But is Sifu Feminist? In my opinion, yes, but in a way that brings up a little ludonarrative dissonance (aka, when something in gameplay causes a disconnect between that and an in-game story), but also in a way that makes that dissonance thematically rich to the story in a different way! I’ll save specifics on that for my video!

For jokes, I could say “you can play as a guy or a girl, plus you can beat up strong lady enemies among dudes too, so equal rights, equal fights, no?”… Regardless of my thoughts alone, engaging with and discussing media through a lens of feminist theory can help reveal more about the art we enjoy and the world we live in that gave it to us.

As the only person my age in the known universe who has seen History of The World Part 1, I feel emboldened to share the following paraphrased quote: The servant waits while the Sifu baits.

Sifu’s release has been brought forward to February 8th 2022 as shown in this gameplay-update-trailer-thingamadoodle! It was originally going to come on the 22nd (and late this year before that), but considering Elden Ring’s release set for the 25th of 2022, the devs likely didn’t want to have to compete with another of the most hyped games of the year.

What is Sifu? I’m so glad I asked! Sifu is an epic-looking Kung-Fu action game complete with motion-capture animations for full immersion letting you live out your deepest Ip Man meets Groundhog Day fantasies! I say Groundhog Day because each death makes the player character “age”. For example, let’s say you start off as a K-Pop twink who’s questing across various cool environments kicking names and taking ass. A couple gameplay hours later, you then get ganked on by Beefy Bert and his squad of goons because it turns out you can’t rely on the same 69-hit combo to carry you against every enemy encounter. One Game Over screen later and boom, now you graduated from twink to twunk with a five-o’clock shadow and possibly the rumblings of Dad-bod. Though dying isn’t all bad, any Kill Bill fans may relish the chance to play as a Pai Mei-looking bloke… Fun fact, Pai Mei looks a hell of a lot like Seijun Suzuki: B-movie auteur and mind-brain explordinaire.

PlayStation streamed their latest State of Play showcase last night and we have the rundown of what to look forward to for the upcoming half of the year.

If you aren’t familiar with the event, State of Play is a video programme that happens roughly 3-4 times a year which showcases all the latest updates, announcements, and new trailers from the world of PlayStation.

Moss: Book II

The sequel to 2018’s Moss, follows Quill, the extremely brave and cute mouse adventurer, who takes on clockwork monsters, solves puzzles and helps giant spirits navigate the world. Just like the first game, it will be a VR title.

Arcadegeddon

A new multiplayer shooter that is already out in early access for PS5. Explore multiple biomes, play mini-games, find hidden chests, and defeat numerous enemies and boss levels with your friends. It’s set to release in early 2022.

Hunter’s Arena Legends 

A new one-of-a-kind-melee-battle-royale that takes you to a beautifully crafted ancient East Asian world where you must fight deadly demons as well as each other. It’s set to drop on August 3 and will be one of the free titles for PlayStation members during that month.

JETT: The Far Shore

From the creators of Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery EP, comes an adventure game where you explore space as an intrepid aviation scientist, looking for somewhere to carry on and hopefully, save humanity. It will be released for PS4 and PS5 later this year.

Lost Judgement

The sequel to Yakuza‘s spin-off Judgement sees you play as Takayuku Yagami as he explores the Japanese cities of Kamurocho and Isezaki Ijincho. The game will feature a trial, a “gruesome tragedy”, and a potential revenge plot, even someone being framed for a murder. It’s out on September 24.

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut

The Director’s Cut of the highly successful Death Stranding shows off a remastered version of Hideo Kojima’s stunning game, featuring improved melee combat, new weapons, a firing range to practice your skills, new story missions, and so much more. It’s also set to be released on September 24.

Deathloop

Bethesda gave us an extended look at the upcoming action-adventure shooter game that all takes place in a time loop. The footage includes a level of the game and we see Julianna, the rival assassin who will keep main character Colt company, as well as Colt’s special abilities that includes being able to rewind time at the moment of death while the rest of the world stays the same… Deathloop was one of the main features of the showcase and is expected to drop on September 14.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles

The new trailer for this anime and manga adaption gives us a shot-for-shot recreation of a scene many fans will be familiar with, making this adaptation just as authentic as its counterparts. We get to see the three main characters battle against demon bosses and the 3D animation for the gameplay has really paid off. More of the game’s expectations can be found here, and it will drop on October 15.

Sifu

The martial arts fighting game developed by Sloclap that puts you in control of a young Kung-Fu student looking for revenge also teased some gameplay at the State of Play showcase. Sadly, it also announced the game is now expecting a 2022 release date instead of its original 2021 release window.

F.I.S.T.

Probably the only game that has you play as a rabbit man with a giant robotic arm, F.I.S.T, otherwise known as Forged in Shadow Torch, is a 2D Metroidvania-style platformer where animals take on machines that have invaded their world. You play as Rayton as he comes out of hiding to save his kidnapped friends. It will be released on September 7.

Tribes of Midgard

This co-op action survival RPG sees you defend your village from nightly raids and giant invaders as Ragnarok steadily approaches. You can also do more than survive with the Tribes’ Saga Mode, as it invites you to see how many weapons you can forge and giants you can slay in under two hours. It is set to release on PS4, PS5 and PC on July 27.
