If you read my 5 Brilliant Gaming Stories blog, you’d know that the Danganronpa trilogy, in my humble opinion, have some of the best plot twists in gaming! It’s like if Death Note and Squid Game had a coke-infused orgy with an season of Murder She Wrote and is all the better for it. Needless to say, I’m pretty enthused that the folks at Nintendo recently added the games to a three-in-one game for Switch. And if you wanna get your mits on the Danganronpa PS4 Trilogy, have a butcher’s right here!

The folks at Spike Chunsoft recently tweeted an article detailing various new patch notes. The updates are as follows:

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition Patch 1.0.1

• Improved stability to prevent freezes in School Mode.
• Added auto saves that trigger after each in-game day in School Mode.
• Fixed an issue preventing text from appearing after “%” symbols.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Anniversary Edition Patch 1.0.1

• Added auto saves that trigger after each in-game day in Island Mode.
• Fixed an issue preventing text from appearing after “%” symbols.

Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp 1.0.3

• Added an in-game purchase log for consumable service items.
• Improved stability to prevent freezes.
• Fixed some graphic display issues.
• Fixed some text issues.
• Other miscellaneous fixes.

My Danganronpa Hottakes (SPOILERS).

Chihiro and The Transphobia Question: Cutting a long story short, one of the first game’s twists relies on everyone thinking Chihiro is a girl, but turns out he was actually a bloke. Consensus within much of the fandom is essentially “good game, shocking twist, but feeds into TERF-y stereotypes”. By no means THE most popular transphobic argument out there, but I’ll admit, having a twist hinge on “this all could’ve been avoided if you just identified as a feminine man” is pretty darn problematic, to put it mildly. That said, I do think it is possible to charitably read an alternative pro-trans interpretation of Chihiro’s character assassination (get it? Because he was LITERALLY assassinated): Essentially, I believe the anti-trans subtext coexists with the fact that Chihiro is one of the most sympathetic characters in the game, and for a murder that took place in the bathroom, no one ever pays lip service to the stereotype of trans women pretending to be women for kicks. And due to literally living in terf island, I’ll top off this bit by saying “hey, if you don’t have the patience to read Judith Butler, check out Lonerbox, Philosophy Tube, Shaun and Jammidodger’s videos on trans topics” if your booty is still firmly planted on farmer McDonald’s fence!

Kaede is best girl, don’t @ me: She plays piano, I play piano, caring and optimistic to a tragic degree, but also not afraid to cut a bih when she thought it would save her friends… Yeah, my kinky switch-ass likes one of the most vanilla characters in-game, sue me!

My Danganronpa Machete Order: Now, once upon a time, I was a strong independent broke b!tch who didn’t need no money. As a result, my first introduction to the danganronpa games was through a letsplay of the second game by Razzbowski, the fresh prince of FNAF. It did spoiler a couple of major twists from the first game, but as far as introductions go, it was a strong one!

Azula always lies… But does Monokuma? To which I say… Well, yes, but actually no? An interesting thing about the series in my opinion is that Monokuma (or whoever’s controlling him at whatever time) really only tells ONE major lie per game, which usually ends up leading to an insane epic climax that leads to the ending. Alot of the murders have a sense of “hell is other people” at times. Ain’t that right Jake Peralta?

The team behind Danganronpa has announced a new dark fantasy game

Danganronpa recently celebrated 11 years since the first video game in the series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, was released in Japan. The series went onto become a huge franchise spawning manga, anime, graphic novels, and even a stage play.

Now, the team behind the games has announced a new dark fantasy game, titled Enigma Archives: Rain Code.

Not a lot of information has been releasing regarding the upcoming game Enigma Archives: Rain Code, however, a teaser site is already up and running for fans to explore from its developer, Spike Chunsoft. It is stated on the website that Enigma Archives: Rain Code will give players a “dark fantasy mystery” experience and even offers a teaser trailer that shows key visuals from the game.

It is clear from all the visuals given that this particular game inspired by Danganronpa will take on the iconic visualisation from its predecessor, unlike the previous games inspired by the dark adventure game series. The key visuals hints at spooky ghosts, pink blood, and long, ominous dark cloaks will be involved in the game. However, It is unclear from what we have seen whether Enigma Archives: Rain Code will follow the same gameplay mechanics as Danganronpa.

We also see a glimpse of our main protagonist and heroine in the trailer- a small boy with pink hair worn in the ‘idiot hair’ style common to all three Danganronpa games’ protagonists, and a tall girl with even pinker hair, an elaborate gothic dress, and horns.

The teaser trailer also reveals that Danganronpa’s creator and scenerio director Kazutaka Kodaka will be writing the story for Enigma Archives: Rain Code, Masafumi Takada will be composing the soundtrack, and Rui Komatsuzaki will be designing the characters.

Nothing else has been released regarding the new game, yet it is easy to say Danganronpa fans will be excited for this announcement.

Made in Abyss is an orgasmically gorgeous manga (written by Akihito Tsukushi) and anime series about a little girl and her sentient robot buddy, only to go from wholesome exploration of a vast pretty fantasy landscape to “uncle Lovecraft’s funtime murder hole“ in the span of a few episodes.

A Made in Abyss Action JRPG adaptation was announced in May of 2021 to be developed by Spike Chunsoft, the company behind the Danganronpa games, which have some of the best plot twists in gaming in my humble opinion.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness is set to release in 2022 for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam… Now let’s analyse some screenshots yall!

Alongside the Made in Abyss story mode following the anime, there will also be a mode where you make your own cave raider who sets out to explore The Titular Abyss. This mode’s story will be written by Akihito Tsukushi. Mild shame that the skin colour options are lacking, but that may change in future updates.

“Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is a 3D Action RPG in which the player themselves delve into the world of the Abyss and seek out its depths through growth and overcoming hardships. Other than a story mode that follows the plot of the anime, there’s an original story supervised by the series author Akihito Tsukushi, in which players can experience a dark fantasy in the flavor of the original series. Many characters from the original series appear in-game, and event scenes are fully voiced by the anime cast” – Spike Chunsoft

My thoughts on the different interface options: The greenish one with a helmet icon is clearly health. The orange one with a meat icon could represent a hunger meter which offers different gameplay buffs when full. Blue bars in games are typically representative of a “mana” or magic guage, though it could be a thirst meter for water to balance against the food bar. The L/R buttons next to the weapon icon suggest the ability to swap between a few different weapons on the fly, encouraging strategic diversity against various enemies. The small bar next to that weapon? Could represent a Breath of the Wild style weapon degradation system, or a stamina bar that effects how many attacks you can pull off in a row before having to back off and wait for it to recharge.

Uncle Stefan’s Funtime YouTube-Recommendation Hole! Video essays are my crack pipe, so if you’re looking for interesting analyses on Made in Abyss: Mother’s Basement discusses how the anime adaptation feels less like an adaptation of a manga and more like an adaptation of a video game. Exclamation Point of aforementioned “funtime murder hole” fame did great videos on the show’s first episode and a comparative analysis on how it and Eromanga Sensei tackle a relatively common issue in circles of the anime community.

Also, HELL YEAH, bring on those shooty bang-bangs!

As for the delivery of the story mode, it seems it will alternate between cutscenes and visual novel-style text boxes, which could work out well provided that PS1 Hagrid down below manages to loosen up a little.
