In theory, I never watched a single stream, but in practice, I’ve written two impartial to praising articles on Pokimane, so you could say I’m coming out as Poki-curious!

Pokimane (Imane Anys) discusses many topics in her streams, but usually avoids anything regarding relationships on Twitch. Besides occasional joking asides and hints, she doesn’t like going in-depth on the matter. Being an attractive successful online celebrity, one could argue part of the vagueness is due to maintaining a wider audience. Probably nothing as draconian as areas of the Kpop and Idol industry, but hey, it’s an honest living and she’s not under any obligation to talk about something she doesn’t want to.

And outside of potential reasons that lean towards the parasocial, Pokimane has experienced harassment and Twitch raids from others in the past, so makes sense she’d rather keep her personal and public lives separate. Like Spider-Man, if Spider-Man was a 20-something gamer-girl!

Enough Mansplaining on What You Think, What Did Pokimane Say!? On a stream, Pokimane’s friend Kevin (and speculated secret boyfriend by many viewers) was asked during a stream with the two if they were dating. He seemingly jokingly turned to her and asked if they were dating, at which point Pokimane looked uncomfortable and froze up briefly. She later quickly explained her momentary discomfort was because it felt like she’s back in grade school being ‘put on the spot’.

“Now imagine if a reporter came and forcibly asked who your crush is,” – Imane Anys, adding to her ‘put on the spot in grade school’ analogy.

Now’s my first time dipping my webbed flippers into the pool of Twitch drama, so wish me luck! Alternatively, feel free to check my last piece on Pokimane if you’re looking for something a little less dense. I’ll try my best to keep things unbiased, while also calling out the worst of the worst things coming up.

Details man! They are important: Reports have come through that Tyler ‘Ninja‘ Belvins (God, I love that name, on a phonetic level at least) and his wife are getting their legal team involved shortly after Pokimane (Imane Anys) claimed Ninja texted a Twitch representative to help JiDion (Demarcus Cousins the 3rd… CRIKEY that’s a name) with a hate raid on her channel. JiDion was then perma-banned from Twitch shortly after.

JiDion’s fans have admitted to ‘hate-raiding’ Pokimane on a Ninja stream according to Pokimane, which I’m inclined to believe, but I recommend cross-referencing this with other channels on the minuscule off-chance that I’m wrong here.

Pokimane also implied without outright stating (to my knowledge) that Ninja referred to her as a “bitch” (in a stream between JiDion and Ninja) before backpedaling and saying “I meant bitches in general” for plausible deniability. In my opinion, that Ninja-JiDion conversation was moreso a case of JiDion jokingly performing shock at Ninja just using the word ‘bitch’ alone. And as far as this clip goes (seemingly the one Pokimane was referencing based on the ‘bitches in general’ specificity), Ninja also appeared to be condemning JiDion for the hate raids. Could Ninja be dogwhistling? I dunno, maybe… But there’s thousands of hours worth of Twitch stuff to drudge through and ain’t nobody got time for that!

That brings us to right now! Today on January 18th, Pokimane shared what seems to be a screenshot of a private message from Jessica Belvins (Ninja’s wife) that read ‘We are considering everything defamation of character at this point and are getting our legal team involved’.  The message also had a section claiming that Tyler never reached out to any Twitch reps, but he ‘just said that to stop the harassment in his chat from JiDion’s viewers’.

Pokimane said she’s ‘willing to accept and cannot disprove’ that possibility.

The moral of the story? I wish it had one! Although I’m quite certain by this point this whole situation was a misunderstanding between Imane and Tyler that could’ve been avoided if they just had a chinwag on the topic over a morning cuppa, drama of this variety specifically really does make my head spin. With the internet, it’s simultaneously harder AND easier to just lie about… Anything, really!  But hey, hopefully this was a fun read for anyone more clued-up on these drama-llamas than me.

Hasan ‘Woke Bae’ Piker is one of the biggest Twitch streamers in the business, with a penchant for letsplays, reaction videos, and political commentary after getting his start as an intern for the Young Turks news platform. Now Hasan gets paid to joke about how Kaitlin Bennett is a ‘secret leftist’ and take the mick out of Neo-Nazi corners of the internet… So basically me, but considerably more successful and attractive!

Why Ban Hasan? Hasan is currently in a week-long ban (started December 13th mid-stream) from Twitch due to saying ‘cracker’, which is one of The Big No-No-Words that are banned from the platform. For the uninitiated, ‘cracker’ is slang for a white person, derived from it’s initial use as short for ‘whip cracker’ as a reference to slave owners. The ban in question was during a debate Hasan was having with a viewer of his, defending it’s use. One excerpt goes as follows:

“Recognise that the person calling you a fucking cracker is literally powerless, okay? […] They’re doing it as someone who’s been historically oppressed blowing off steam. You can say that that’s infantilising or whatever the fuck, but that’s truly the reality. Because there is no historical or contemporary oppression tied to that word because there is no historical or contemporary oppression with being white” – Hasan Piker.

My opinion on the matter? Essentially the same as Hasan. He even brought up in a later YouTube video (I’m paraphrasing) that “the fact y’all say cracker and not The Actual N Word kinda proves my point that The C Word isn’t that bad dewd”! Or we can come at this from a “punching up vs punching down” perspective. Saying cracker is more lighthearted in most cases it’s used because it’s taking a serious topic and downplaying it in a way that pokes fun at the person in the role of power, the N word doesn’t have that luxury.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad said (in response to Hasan Piker’s tweet on his temporary banning): ‘Kinda wild how Twitch responded faster to this absolute non-issue than the actual racism that POC streamers face on the platform’.

Furthermore, reading from my own handy-dandy list of Twitch-banned words, I honestly think the people in charge of that list is purely for the benefit of oversensitive blokes who are afraid of the idea of other people discussing serious topics. Take “incel” for example (involuntary celibate): Not exactly a term of endearment, but not even a swear! The incel movement and individuals have also been involved with and responsible for a lot of anti-feminist and anti-woman hate crimes and backlash, so you’d think discussing incel culture and its ties to white nationalism would be a good thing. The banning of ‘simp’ and ‘virgin’ also paints a picture in my mind of someone who’s likely afraid of those concepts just existing, which is A-Okay (well, arguably), but stopping others from having those conversations doesn’t sit right with me.

On the bright side: Hasan has been streaming with one Ludwig in the meantime and his ban is coming to a close.

One True King is a Texas-based media and production company founded by popular Twitch streamers Asmongold, Mizkif and Esfand. One True King was named The Biggest Streaming Organisation in August after hitting 25 million hours of combined watch time. October 2021 saw the addition of Cyr to One True King during an anniversary stream alongside a new logo. Most recently, Tectone has joined the company!

Meet Tectone. Tectone is a Canadian twitch streamer and YouTuber who mainly specialises in anime and anime-inspired games like Genshin Impact and Arknights. As of writing, Tectone has nearly 600K followers on Twitch and over 10 million total views. Tectone’s YouTube channel currently sits at 740K subscribers.

While somewhat lesser-known than some of his contemporaries, there’s been some small rumblings of Reddit discourse that they were anticipating another prominent female streamer to join the group. In a SHOCKING turn of events, most of the Twitter reactions (as far as I can tell) seem much more positive, mostly consisting of assorted reaction gifs and phrases communicating excitement like ‘woohoo’, ‘let’s GOOOO’ and ‘pog’.

The Redditeers: Yeah, me saying “things were chill on Twitter” isn’t as view-catching as “what fresh hell is this”, so let’s look at the Reddit comments under the One True King announcement.

On the Positive Side:

• ‘He gets good views on his YouTube channel, he’s [a] little bit bigger then (sic) Mizkif on YouTube, and he doesn’t need girls in his thumbnails. It is a smart business decision on OTK part to sign him’
• ‘A great fit in for OTK’.

On the Roasting Side:

• ‘He looks like the combined version of all the other OTK members’.
• ‘He is their final form’.
• ‘He’s like a white Lacari’ (I’m sure I’d find that hilarious if I knew who that was).
• ‘Everyone is so loud in OTK, they don’t need another mega phone andy’ (I’m sure I’d find that hilarious if I knew who that was).

For absolutely no reason at all, please find a particularly grumpy-looking image of Tectone mean-mugging the camera down below.

One Fun Coincidence: I myself have forgotten the name of the track Tectone uses in this video, but surprise surprise, I also used that music in my own YouTube video One Villainous Scene: Lil Zhe’s Jealous Rage. Small world.
