Xbox Head Phil Spencer has said that titles do not have to be on Xbox game pass to stand a chance on the Xbox Platform. At a recent GDC talk, he was quoted as saying “I also want to make clear to people that are out there that for us at Xbox, there’s not one business model that we think is going to win. I often get asked by developers, ‘if I’m not in the subscription am I just not viable on Xbox anymore?’ and it’s absolutely not true.”

“Like we look at retail of people selling games, buying games, it’s an important part of our P&L [profit and loss statement], you know that. And it’s something that we invest resources in to enable our developers to do great work there.”

Xbox game pass launched back in 2017 and is probably one of the biggest Feathers in microsofts hat both last gen and this gen. It has attracted 25million subscribers as of January 2922 and was a big moment of redemption for microsoft following the Xbox Ones underwhelming early life and blatant anti-consumer practices.

Members cat access to over 100 Titles, including all first party exclusives day and date of launch, for arround £8 a month on console and PC, or £11 for access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. You may think that this equates to microsoft effectively giving away their games, however Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claimed last year that Xbox Game Pass subscribers play arround 40% more games and spend 50% more than non-members.

Despite this, Spencer said in the GDC video that mictosoft Will continue to support different and diverse business models including retai, Subscription and free to play.

“And this is where I sometimes contrast against other forms of media that we get compared to, whether it’s music, whether it’s video, where the models have really condensed down to maybe one or two business models that are working,” he said.

“I fundamentally believe a strength for us in the video game business is the diversity of business models and the strength of those.

“Definitely in team Xbox, we invest in the business models that developers are asking for and ensuring those are flourishing, so that every year we see great new experiences that come to our platform that might never have been built if the business model capability wasn’t there on our platform.”

Danganronpa came out all the way back in 2010, on the PSP in japan. Before long the game came mobile, and, as of now, the game has Hit Xbox, with the Anniversary version of the first game (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition) coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S through the game pass.

Danganronpa is a Visual Novel that combines the gameplay style of the Ace Attorney Series with a plot Seemingly ripped out of the SAW films. A group of students are locked in a school-turned-prison, where students are kept under the watchful eye of monokuma- a black and white, seemingly alive teddy bear. There are only 2 ways out: be the last man standing, or commit murder and get away with it. However, each time a murder is commited, a trial is held, and if the person who commited the crime is found guilty, they are Killed. If they are found inoccent, everyone else dies.

Yeah this game is a bit edgy, just a heads up. But we live in the post FNAF world, where Child murder as a topic in games is basically nothing, so whats the harm?

PlayStation Now has long lived in the shadow of the Xbox Game Pass, providing better services for their customers with the content handed out, pushing Xbox users to believe that the subscription service is a necessary part of owning the console. Unfortunately, Sony’s service hasn’t had the same impact since its launch in 2014.

Back 4 Blood, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite are already available to Xbox Game Pass members to pre-download, leaving PS Now members scratching their heads as to why they get left in the dark with old titles for streaming.

Although some of them have been great on PS Now, including, a game of the year, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, now, these are all fantastic games. If you’ve not given them a go, they’re all worth it, but there is no competition compared to some of Xbox’s biggest titles being made available to its game pass subscribers.

One of Sony’s most prolific games is now coming to the subscription service, The Last of Us 2. A storyline that is currently being made into a featured series. Ellie and Joel’s story, their battle against infected, mutated monsters, and their unmutated counterparts. Although the first instalment had Ellie and Joel traversing through the apocalyptic world in search of a notorious group of survivors, the second takes a much darker spin on the popular game, playing as different characters to read two individual stories as they happen simultaneously.

As well as The Last of Us 2, multiple other games joined the subscription service this month. These include Fallout 76, Final Fantasy 8: Remastered, Amnesia: Collection, Desperados 3, Yet Another Zombie Defence HD and Victor Vran: Overkill Edition. Again, it might be biased, but there’s only one standout game involved here. You can see a more detailed description of these titles here.

Although new titles aren’t readily available as a subscription service, classic fan favourites such as Oblivion and Star Wars the Force Unleashed are streamable. Among these are hundreds of other games on the streaming service. So all may not be lost for Sony’s attempt at this service.

Seeing the success of Xbox Game Pass, Sony is attempting the same, even if they may be a few steps behind in the process, for the price of it (£8.99 a month) and the number of titles at the click of a button, it’s got to be worth it surely?
