The closing of the eStore on Nintendo 3DS and WiiU is sad, but inevitable. However, Nintendo is actively making it very difficult to access their retro titles – despite their value in the gaming industry and culturally as well.

While it may be frustrating not to be able to purchase Nintendo’s famed titles digitally any more, even worse is the loss of games that only existed in digital format.

The Video Game History Foundation, which is working to promote the preservation of retro video games, spoke out about Nintendo in a recent tweet.

Our statement on the closure of Nintendo's legacy digital shops. pic.twitter.com/mG5GzuGH4G

— Video Game History Foundation (@GameHistoryOrg) February 17, 2022

The text reads:

While it is unfortunate that people won’t be able to purchase digital 3DS or Wii U games anymore, we understand the business reality that went into this decision. What we don’t understand is what path Nintendo expects its fans to take, should they wish to play these games in the future. As a paying member of the Entertainment Software Association, Nintendo actively funds lobbying that prevents even libraries from being able to provide legal access to these games. Not providing commercial access is understandable, but preventing institutional work to preserve these titles on top of that is actively destructive to video game history. We encourage ESA members like Nintendo to rethink their position on this issue and work with existing institutions to find a solution.

I think we can all appreciate their addressing of this, and I also sincerely hope that Nintendo will reconsider their treatment of retro titles.

the 3DS & Wii U will be looking a whole lot different after it’s been updated, and players will be able to take 100 screenshots that will be available in personal albums so that other users won’t be able to see them. as well as this, a new play journal feature will be installed. this will allow players to record their thoughts on games as they’re playing them. this feature is a replacement of the activity feed, so you won’t be able to use this activity feed once the updates are installed.

Communities will be redesigned as well, and you can see more information on this in three separate sections. The photo above shows this.

the final change is that you’ll be able to post in succession more regularly. not including in-game posts, you can post up to 30 comments/posts a day.

There is not yet a set date for the Miiverse updates beyond “summer”, but we’d imagine it’ll be some time soon.

A recent interview with the producer of Hyrule Warriors Legends, Yosuke Hayashi, sheds light on even more characters being added to the Zelda universe – “I can’t go into details yet, but we plan to add new character(s) other than Tetra and King of Hyrule. There are fan favorites and surprising characters in the game, so I’d be happy if you kept guessing who will join the fight while waiting for follow-up information.”

With Hyrule Warriors Legends announced to come to the 3DS at some point, this is a great way to start or relive the experience, which was originally released on the Wii U. As we ll as this, it was confirmed at Nintendo’s E3 Digital Event that Hyrule Warriors Legends will come with all the DLC from the original title.

So many possible characters for the game are floating in the air! Perhaps Medli? Or maybe Saria, a more staple character? We shall have to wait and see!

Whilst most people thought we would see some information on a possible proper Metroid Prime game. Series producer, Kensuke Tanabe, suggests were unlikely to see a release until Nintendo launches its next-gen console, code-named “NX”.

Speaking at E3, Tanabe discussed how. “If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo’s NX console.”

While there was no news of a Metroid Prime game for Wii U, Metroid Prime: Federation Force was unveiled at E3, a co-op multiplayer game heading to 3DS in 2016.

With last week’s Street Fighter V trailer, we thought we would have to wait a while before being able to play with Ryu but not for Super Smash Bros. owners. For the first time in a Super Smash Bros. game a character from the Street Fighter series will be entering the arena. As well as Ryu, Roy from Fire Emblem and Lucas from Mother 3 will be released as playable characters. During this content update, there will be new Mii fighter costumes, bonus trophies, additional Wii Super Smash Bros. amiibo and new stages, including the Dreamland stage, based on the original stage Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64.

Nintendo are giving its fans a little taster before their E3 conference tomorrow. Expect to hear more information about titles such as Mario Maker, Star Fox for Wii U and Yoshi’s Wooly World.

Dear old Nintendo has released a 24 minute open world game-play video for the upcoming Wii-U exclusive, Xenoblade Chronicles X. From this video, you can see some of the game’s large robots flying about, the exploration of a few of the game’s huge open areas and a sneak peek at some group combat! Unfortunately, the game-play is only currently available in Japanese, but following the video and what’s going on is nothing short of a doddle!

Xenoblade Chronicles X will be launching in Japan on 29th April 2015, and for Europe and North America at a later date. Nintendo also recently announced that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, the upcoming port of Monolith Soft’s Wii game, will launch exclusively for the New Nintendo 3DS on 10th April 2015.

The reason Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is exclusive to the New 3DS is because the system packs a speedier CPU that is necessary for running the game. It is also the only game to be announced so far that requires the new system, which also plays all regular 3DS games.

You can watch the game-play HERE, on our ‘Exciting Game Trailers’ playlist on YouTube!

The loyalty programme will cease to exist by September this year

Club Nintendo is a loyalty programme which opened in 2007, which rewarded free gifts to owners of the Nintendo DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. As of this September, the programme will be no more! Nintendo have said that they are “working hard to create a new programme”, which we are expecting to launch later on in the year. Aside from Nintendo’s pledge that those who sign up to the new program will receive a free copy of Flipnote Studio 3D for the 3DS, no further details have been aired.

Customers existing on Club Nintendo will have until 30th September 2015 to spend their remaining currency of stars and, after this date, all stars will have been deleted. Any news games arriving from Nintendo will no longer come with reward points, by the end of April this year, and the new Nintendo 3DS will not come with Club Nintendo reward points when it is released on 13th February.

Prizes for being a loyal customer included toys, apparel, wallpapers, ringtones and soundtracks. Nintendo has said that the programme has more than six million members! The company also added that, “There are plenty of unique and exclusive items already available in the Stars Catalogue, and we’ll keep adding more over the coming months, so there’s plenty to spend your Stars on before September 30th 2015.”

New Nintendo 3DS

Expect to see this beauty on the shelves on 13th February 2015 in the UK!

The latest hardware was announced on 29th August 2014 and integrates a number of new innovations and features, these mainly being a new analogue control stick, more computing power, two new buttons, Amiibo integration, and changeable cover plates. As with the original 3DS, this latest version will come in both standard and XL, which will both feature faster processing and revised controls.

In addition to this new controller, the 3DS incorporates third and fourth back trigger buttons, the ZR and ZL buttons, conveniently located for use with the new analogue stick. As we can see from this, the handheld console harbours dimensions similar to current hardware. We can expect a wider 3D viewing angle, which will provide far less blurring when looked at from the side. Computing power has also been expanded by brand new internal can you buy viagra online hardware. Fancy!

The New 3DS integrates NFC connectivity into the bottom touch-screen, allowing Nintendo’s Amiibo figurines to be placed directly on the display to interact with the software. What’s more (and I’m sure that this is everyone’s favourite part of any handheld hardware), the latest version of the 3DS’ shell allows changeable cover plates, so that you may easily customise the physical appearance of your very own piece. Among the new cover plate designs are a variety of Mario-themed designs, including iconic mushrooms and a nifty wood grain throwback design.

What’s not to love about the latest version of the 3DS?! A console and screen all-in-one! It’ll be made available in the UK on 13th February 2015.
