The streaming giants are taking another delve into a live-action project- this time featuring PokeBalls

According to Variety, Netflix is taking on another live-action project which will be with our favourite companions, Pokemon.

The series is in early development and nothing can be said about the plot as of yet, however, it is said to be akin to the 2019 movie Detective Pikachu, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Justin Smith, based on the Detective Pikachu game.

Pokemon Live-Action Series: Yay or Nay?

Variety reported that Lucifer co-runner Joe Henderson has been hired as a writer and executive producer for the show. Henderson is currently working on series 6 of Lucifer after it got picked up by Netflix and is also currently developing an adaptation for his comic Shadecraft. 

This isn’t the first Pokemon show to make Netflix its home, as previous shows such as Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon: Journeys have streamed there amongst others.

It’s also not the first game adaptation or live-action project we will be waiting for either. Netflix has announced upcoming animated shows for Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell, Devil Far Cry, as well as upcoming live-action shows for Assassin’s Creed, along with live-action shows for anime and cartoon favourites Cowboy Bebop, Avatar: The Last Airbender and my most anticipated adaptation, One Piece. 

With all these different adaptation projects lined up, it’s hard not to be excited, yet also fearful of how they are going to pull these off. Netflix has experienced great success with series such as Castlevania and The Witcher, but not so much with their 2017 movie adaptation of Death Note. 

However, this could lead to something more special now there is potential for Netflix and The Pokemon Company to team up with the streaming company moving into the gaming industry.

Halo is practically a household name as one of the biggest franchises in gaming, selling over 77 million units worldwide and grossing over $5 billion in sales. It has received plenty of adaptations, from novels and comics books to failed attempts at a live-action movie and is now finally getting a live-action series on Paramount+, scheduled to be released in 2022. It is clearly a beloved series and the fans have also shown their love through creativity when it comes to producing fan-made content.

The most recent addition to the pantheon of fan-made projects is film student Gareth Reeve‘s teaser trailer for his fan-made film. Long Way Home follows a lone ODST trooper after a blundered drop leaves them stranded on Delta Halo. The trooper will travel across the surface to regroup with their team, with Covenant troops right on their trail. It is set to be released online in August 2021.

The trailer does an exceptional job of showing enough of the ODST troop and Delta Halo, but not revealing too much to keep the audience wanting more. It is clear to see the passion for the game, with the incredibly accurate ODST combat gear that will send a shiver down any Halo fan’s spine and the iconic Halo rings that can be seen in the distance that leaves you feeling pure nostalgia and anticipation for this fan-made film’s release.

There have been so many fan-made projects for the Halo franchise since its release in 2001, it is impossible to list them all. One of the most popular (and personal favourite of mine) is RoosterTeeth‘s machinima comedic web series Red vs Blue, which started back in 2003 and has a whopping 18 seasons now. Fans of Halo who don’t know the web series will know the game Grifball that was inspired by the show and added to Halo’s multiplayer. There has also been a fan-made game in the works since 2017 by Halo lovers all around the world. Installation 01 is a free game set to be released on all PC platforms that recreates the multiplayer experience of the Bungie-era games.

Even though the official Halo adaptations are something to appreciate and speculate with what’s in store, it’s clear to see the fans are running the show with its immeasurable quality of fan-made content. It will be interesting to see the impact Long Way Homes makes within the community.

It was revealed recently by The Suicide Squad’s director, James Gunn, that Harley Quinn’s costume design from the movie is based on her look from the best-selling game Batman: Arkham City.

Speaking in a recent trailer breakdown with IGN for the latest trailer, Gunn reveals one of the things he gets constantly asked about in interviews is what will Harley Quinn be wearing in the film. He goes onto confirm the suspicions fans had made during the first two trailer drops that his inspiration for Harley’s first outfit in the film came from Batman: Arkham City.

The red and black colour scheme is what makes this look iconic, with Margot Robbie’s plaits and makeup matching the game’s own design. Robbie wears a similar pair of gloves and choker, and her top is the exact same design as the one that features in the game. There is one major addition, the jacket, which Gunn goes onto describe.

I knew I wanted to have something written on the back of her jacket, motorcycle gang style, and so that’s where I came up with ‘Live fast, die clown.’ Although there were some other options. We also made a jacket that says ‘Clown AF’ and we had another jacket that says ‘World’s Best Grandpa.’ And it was between those three different jackets. – James Gunn, IGN

James Gunn also stated he had a huge map of different looks of Harley Quinn throughout the years in various media, and this is the one that he liked the best, giving high praise to the game itself.

The Batman: Arkham games by Rocksteady Studios certainly redefined superhero games during their time, with Asylum, City, and Knight being critically praised and loved by fans (for the most part) for their exceptional storytelling, awesome character designs and remarkable combat.

However, it is interesting to note the singular focus that has been placed on Harley Quinn’s character design from the film. With Gunn being asked constantly what she will be wearing, it would be nice to know if the male character designs have been treated the same way.

If you aren’t aware, Sonic the Hedgehog celebrated its 30th birthday yesterday, and we got not one, but two birthday treats!

Following on from the Minecraft DLC drop, fans also received a sneak peek at the concept art for the new Netflix show that is currently in development.

Sonic Prime is set to be a 24-episode family-friendly show to be released worldwide in 2022. It is described to be a “high-octane adventure” and a “journey of self-discovery and redemption” where the fate of a new multiverse rests in Sonic’s gloved hands. The Canadian production company WildBrain, responsible for shows Ben 10 and Big Hero 6, is animating the series in Vancouver, while Man of Action Entertainment will be the showrunners and executive producers.

Patrick Horan, who created the pieces for the upcoming programme, uploaded them onto ArtStation but were shortly removed after they were found and shared online. Luckily for us, Tails Channel reshared them on Twitter.

Of course, concept art can change over time and these images may not make it into the final product, however, it’s exciting to see what’s in store!

There’s no CGI Sonic lurking here, that’s for sure.

Fans of Final Fantasy have already been fed by the plenty of updates Square Enix had to offer at E3 this year, but now it has been revealed a new animated series is in the works.

It was announced last night that the original and much loved PlayStation game would be getting an animated series by Square Enix social media manager, Sunil Godhania.

Originally released in 2000 and sold over five million copies worldwide, the game follows the thief Zidane Tribal, who is hired to kidnap a princess and ends up teaming up with to save her kingdom from evil forces. At the time, the game shifted away from realistic character designs towards a more cartoonish aesthetic; so already this is something that could work if done correctly.

The company co-developing the series is French animation Cyber Group Studios, who have previous experience adapting video game series into animated shows. They created the series for the lesser-known game Mini Ninjas and also created series based on Tom Sawyer and Zorro. The studio will also be in charge of distribution and are already supposedly preparing to pitch the show to broadcasters. The series is to be aimed at ages 8-13, yet it is being geared towards both die-hard fans and newcomers alike. Production is set to begin next year.

Final Fantasy has been turned into an animated series before, yet it didn’t directly follow a particular series and only had one series. This new show could be the result of Square Enix wanting to get back into the hype and fast-growing trend of video games being adapted into tv shows, with the success of Netflix’s Castlevania and other animated shows lined up in Netflix’s itinerary, such as Cyperpunk 2077 and Tomb Raider, and all the other latest video game adaptations that are listed here.

This news follows after this year’s Square Enix E3 conference, where they announced a ‘renaissance’ for the 30-year-old game series through the remastering of the original six Final Fantasy games that were released on NES and SNES. A new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV is going to be released on November 23 on Steam, PS4 and PS5 retrospectively and the company also announced Final Fantasy XVI is in development.
