5 Games that literally Scream Studio Ghibli

We all crave a little adventure in our gameplay and while there are many games that carry emotional weight, it can be hard to find an adventure game that has that Studio Ghibli vibe to it. So I have created a list of 5 games I’ve played, love and recommend, each one with a good reason as to why they fit the ‘Studio Ghibli vibe’ category.

1. Ni No Kuni Wrath of The White Witch

This has to be on the list, everyone should be aware of this game by now. The same animators, composers and illustrators that are behind most Studio Ghibli films, were part of this fantastic franchise. It’s not just that, but the growth of friendship, love, self-belief and self-discipline all comes through in its plot. The gameplay is simple, but it’s made that way so everyone and anyone can play through Ni No Kuni without being too confused. It works really well, the voice acting, the story, the characters, the dialogue makes it all worthwhile. Not to mention the soundtrack is incredible, if you’re looking to play a game that feels 100% like a Studio Ghibli film, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch is the one for you.

If I’m being completely honest, when I first saw the trailer…I wasn’t very impressed, I felt like I wouldn’t enjoy Ni No Kuni. I waited until the Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch had a discount offer before I bought it. One of the DUMBEST decisions I’ve ever made. From the moment I knew that Ni No Kuni existed, I should have bought it instantly and at FULL PRICE. I was mad that I ever doubted the Ni No Kuni franchise and wished I could rewind time to slap myself in the face and tell myself to buy it.

Join Oliver as he embarks on an adventure through a world inhabited by new friends and ferocious foes alike in the hopes of bringing back his mother after a tragic incident. 2. Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom

Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom is just as fantastic as the first. While it is considered a sequel to the first game and have a few things referencing characters and plot from the first game, it has a completely different plot and a new story. It’s everything you expect from a Studio Ghibli film and is jam-packed with memorable characters, a wonderful plot, beautiful soundtracks, fantasy elements and a great combat system. It’s everything the first game was, but better.

I recommend playing both Ni No Kuni Games IN JAPANESE with English subtitles.

3. Ori and The Blind Forest

Ori and The Blind Forest is more than just an aesthetic 2D Platformer. Without revealing too much, Ori and the blind forest is a story that follows a guardian spirit, aiming to restore life into the forest. As many of us know, Studio Ghibli films concentrate a lot on magic and the environment.

While the appearance isn’t anime-like, the plot is just as heart-warming. The soundtrack is orchestral and suits each scene very well, the visuals are without a doubt the games strongest asset, but the mechanics are what makes this game amazing, they help enhance the experience. Puzzles, combat and gaining certain abilities help you to progress in the game as it would with any adventure game, however, we get to see the impact it has on the main character and also how it affects our gameplay. Such as the main character almost grovelling throughout the forest.

It’s a great game for anyone who is looking for a relaxing, yet emotional adventure game.

4. Paper Mario: The Origami King

DON’T CLICK AWAY. Let me explain first. I understand that there are many Paper Mario fans who are not so impressed because of the fact that this Paper Mario game isn’t the same as the traditional ones, I also understand that Mario himself may not seem like a very Studio Ghibli character AT ALL, but…Paper Mario The Origami King, gives off those Studio Ghibli vibes, and here’s why.

The characterisation and dialogue is amazing, the development of every character is well done, the emotional plot twists tied in with the constant exploration and meeting new characters, you don’t expect to cry during this playthrough, but boy does the emotion hit you like a train. The combat system might not be the same as The Thousand Year Door, but it was enjoyable. Not to mention, it’s a long game, you can easily have over 40 hours playing, especially if you aim to get 100%. Did I mention this is also has a great soundtrack?

5. Wandersong

This is at the top of my list, surprisingly…almost above Ni No Kuni, while it does not LOOK like anime, the story, dialogue, characters and the emotional journey it takes you on is what makes me give this game a 20/10. It is without a doubt one of the best games I’ve played. Wandersong is a beautiful game that follows the story of a simple Bard. He is a singer who encounters a messenger of a goddess called Eya in a dream. She tells the Bard it’s the end of the world, but with the power of his voice, he can save it with ‘The Earth Song’ and now must collect all the pieces by travelling around the world.

The soundtrack is perfect, the mechanics are perfect, the controls? Perfect. The characters? Perfect. Have I played the game over 3 times in a row? YES, I HAVE. It’s fantastic and everyone should give it a try, the entire game is filled with life. JUST PLAY IT.

Rainbow Billy The Curse of Leviathan, A Paper Mario – inspired Adventure

It has been announced by ManaVoid Entertainment, the developers themselves that Rainbow Billy: The Curse of Leviathan will indeed be released on the 5th October 2021, that’s 4 days time…It’s come a long way since being announced at the Wholesome Games Direct, during E3. Many have been waiting for its release, the best way to describe this Indie game is a cross between Paper Mario and Chicory. As the Paper Mario franchise hasn’t impressed fans recently with the games Nintendo has put out, they’ve been looking for alternatives, one 2.5D game that gained a reasonable amount of recognition, is Bug Fables, which had everything the Paper Mario fans were looking for, except for Paper Mario. However, times are changing and these other 2.5D games have their own unique style to it, while the appearance is similar to Paper Mario, the storyline, dialogue, mechanics and exploration, are all different. They don’t aim to make a Paper Mario replica for Paper Mario fans, but they aim to take inspiration and surprise Paper Mario fans with their new, innovative creation of a 2.5D game. It’s not always going to include turn-based battle, the soundtrack you’re looking for or an exact storyline mimicking the original. Rainbow Billy The Curse of Leviathan and many other 2.5D games, will have their own vibe and I think we should ALL give these games a chance! What is Rainbow Billy The Curse of Leviathan?

Well, Rainbow Billy: The Curse of Leviathan is an adventure RPG developed ManaVoid Entertainment and is a 2.5D game. Rainbow Billy is an Adventure RPG ManaVoid has described this as a game where you “Save whimsical creatures with the power of kindness in order to recolour a black-and-white world in Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan, a wholesome 2.5D Adventure-RPG!”. Leviathan, the evil sea monster has taken colour away from the world and it’s up to you to bring it back. With multiple islands to visit, inhabitants to help and bosses to defeat. Not to mention puzzles, exploration and shops where you can get the equipment you’ll need on your dangerous journey (Have you heard the adorable shop theme? Click here to have a look). Rainbow billy is a whimsical, quirky, action-adventure game that everyone should have on their Wishlist.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits Looks like Studio Ghibli & Avatar The Last Airbender had a Child

Kena: Bridge of Spirits released on the PS4 & PS5 in Less than 7 hours

We have less than a working day until this game releases and it would be a lie to say a lot of us aren’t excited, especially those who are fans of anime and Studio Ghibli films or Avatar The Last Airbender, I mean…come on. You can’t tell me this doesn’t remind you of Princess Mononoke, My neighbour Totoro or Spirited Away and the meditation and spiritual aspect, along with the insane combat resembles The Avatar. I even go as far as to say this slightly resembles games like Ni No Kuni II: Wrath of The White Witch, even though it’s a little more childish than Kena: Bridge of Spirits, I have to throw it in. There are a lot more I could throw in as well, like Ori and The Blind Forest. There’s too many to list at once, regardless this is definitely a buy as soon as it’s out game for me.

So then, What Is Kena: Bridge of Spirits?

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a narrative action-adventure game developed by Ember Lab. The story follows a young Spirit Guide named Kena who’s searching for ‘The Sacred Mountain Shrine’ she ends up in an abandoned village, deep in the forest and tries to uncover the truth behind the lost community and the trapped spirits. The gameplay also includes ‘finding the rot’ which will allow the player to get some really cool powers after transforming the environment. The combat is fast-paced and immersive enough to make me feel as though I’m part of an action film.

Just between you and me, I watched the trailer for Kena: Bridge of Spirits on the PlayStation Store, I kid you not…I moved my analogue stick while watching the gameplay trailer and almost forgot it was not the actual game. If that isn’t enough proof of how good this looks, I don’t know what is.

As mentioned on the PlayStation Store, here are some of the Key Features listed by Ember Lab:

• “Build Your Team: Find and collect Rot to gain powerful abilities, make discoveries, and transform the environment.”

• “Explore: A forgotten village and a strange curse. Draw on the power of the Spirit Realm to restore this once-majestic world.”

• “Fast-Paced Combat: Spirits have become corrupt, trapped and unable to move on, challenging Kena at every turn.”

What will Platforms will Kena: Bridge of Spirits release on?

Kena: Bridge of spirits will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 & Microsoft Windows. Hopefully, we’ll see this on more platforms in the future. Curious of what the Gameplay is like? Here’s 10 minutes of it down below.

Eastward The Apocalyptic Pixel Adventure Game Is Coming To Nintendo Switch & PC

Developers Pixpil Are Releasing Eastward on the Nintendo Switch & PC The 16th September 2021

It’s about time, I’ve been waiting for Eastward ever since seeing it in the Wholesome Games Direct during E3 2021, Indie Live Expo . If you don’t know the Wholesome Games is a another gateway to knowing the best Indie Games out there, they frequently upload trailers to upcoming indie games this year. That being said…let’s have a quick look at Eastward.

What Is The Eastward Indie Game About?

Eastward is a pixelated, aesthetically pleasing adventure game, developed by Pixpil. Society is collapsing and the human population is decreasing. A ‘deadly toxic presence’ has spread across their land, destroying everything. As said by Pixpil themselves “Escape the tyrannical clutches of Sandfill’s subterranean society and join Eastward’s unlikely duo on an exciting adventure to the land above! Discover beautiful yet bizarre settlements and make new friends as you travel across the world by rail.” If you’re curious, have a look at the game trailer below.

This beauty has been getting a generous, yet painful countdown by Pixpil. Many of us nervously sit there, waiting for it’s release. However, during the painful countdown, they’ve offered 10% off Pre-orders. Not only that but, if you Pre-ordered on the Nintendo Switch like I did, then you will see that the game has automatically downloaded to your system, which means you can play the game as soon as the 16th hits at midnight in Japan, which is our 3pm UK time.

Watch Some Eastward Gameplay

If you’re curious or maybe still not sure about getting Eastward, why not have a look at 25 minutes of Eastward Gameplay? It’ll help you make your decision. Now, I know that next-gen games with amazing graphics get a lot of love, but pixelated games need love too. Especially when the dialogue and story stands strong, memorable and teaches you a lesson somewhere along the way. My personal opinion is that pixelated games and 2D games at that, are just as good as 3D games with realistic graphics and slow-mo combat.

Anyway, here’s the gameplay by IGN.

The soundtrack and the nostalgic speech bubble sounds sold me. Eastward and onward with playing…Eastward! The game truly captures the feeling of a dying economy and a slowed down community, you feel a little hope, grasping onto it and trying to escape the future doom of society. I’ll be reviewing Eastward, so stay tuned for that.
