After two years in the beta stage, the Chinese version of Fortnite is finally shutting down.

The official site of the Chinese modified version of Fortnite has announced it will be shutting down on November 15.

Epic Games and Tencent launched the modified site in 2018 where it stayed in beta testing for two years before this announcement.

Fortnite in China

No one will longer be able to register or download the Chinese modified version of Fortnite from now on and the servers will be closed on November 15.

The reason for the server closing wasn’t stated, yet China is very strict when it comes to regulating games, specifically battle royale ones like Fortnite.

To Fortnite China players:

Fortnite China’s Beta test will be ending, and the servers will be closed soon. For details, please see below:

On Monday, November 1 at 11 am, we will close the new user registration entrance and game download portal;

On Monday, November 15 at 11 am, we will turn off servers for Fortnite, and players will no longer be able to connect to the game through the WeGame client.

Thank you to all the Fortnite China players who have ridden the Battle Bus with us by participating in the Beta.

If you have any questions or suggestions about the servers closing, please click here to send us feedback.

Fortnite China Operation Team
October 31, 2021 (Translated for Kotaku)

Fortnite‘s Chinese version was in beta testing for over two years and the government didn’t grant Tencent a license, despite the company publishing the game there. As such, Tencent was unable to monetize Fortnite with in-app transactions.

Similar games like PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds received no monetizations from China either and only when Tencent launched a gore-free replacement titled Game for Peace did it finally get the green light, as stated by Daniel Ahmad on Twitter.

Players that did experience the modified site would also experience certain differences compared to the original Fortnite. There was a separate health bar for damage sustained in the storm, and players could earn a Victory Royale if they survived for long enough.

In other sad news, Dr Mario is also shutting down its servers which you can read more about here.

Chinese outlet China News reported on September 24, that China’s Game Publishers Association Publications Committee (GPC) have announced new self-regulation guidelines for video game companies.

213 game companies signed these guidelines, including NetEase, Tencent, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Shangai.
These regulations include the limitation of hours children can spend gaming, which have already been put into motion.

But far more concerning is their introduction of regulations surrounding gender presentation and sexuality. These new regulations look to target content with effeminate male characters, and gay romances.

If these regulations come to pass, games companies in China will have to conform to these regulations regardless of whether they are selling their game in China or not.

Even as a non-binary person abroad, this news was hurtful to read. I can’t imagine how devastating this is for queer people in China, who are effectively being denied the right to see people like them on-screen. These regulations aren’t just being forced on video games, but are part of a wider cultural crackdown being led by the Propaganda Department of the Chinese Communist Party.

It saddens me greatly that even real people – idols and celebrities – are being targeted and censored.

So how does this relate to Genshin Impact? Well, the community on Twitter imploded last night when this image started circulating.

As reported by the South China Morning Post, Venti was used in their presentations as an example of the type of ‘effeminate’ male characters that the GPC are targeting.

At the bottom there, you can also see they’ve used Gorou as another example. I mean… I get it with Venti. It’s the stockings, right?
But what’s so effeminate about Gorou?!?

He’s a general, an archer, and he’s also a dog. What could be more masculine? Is it because he has his stomach showing? Am I just too gay to be able to see this issue?!?!

Automaton shared some more information about the presentation:

Series featuring a lot of Japanese history-related things were deemed by the GPC inappropriate, as beautification of another country’s history. As Genshin is leaning on Japanese culture and anime-style, they are a possibly at risk of censorship. Especially right now, while the story is glued to the Japan-styled region of Inazuma.

Nothing is changing right this moment, and I would imagine that it will be impossible to actually enforce all of these rules. Panic about a possible Venti redesign will hopefully subside. My guess is that miHoYo cannot change the design of a character that people have already paid for. I’m unsure as to how the situation with Gorou will play out, as he is not a playable character yet a change in design could be possible.

There’s really no way of knowing right now, but I can only hope that miHoYo sticks to their guns and keeps delivering gorgeous characters with a variety of gender presentation, if possible.

The League of Legends developers are looking to explore the Chinese market more

Riot Games, known for its popular online battle arena video game League of Legends, has announced it will turn its attention more to China by adding a new headquarters in Shanghai and with extra focus on new games for a global audience.

Hundreds of roles will be created, according to the CEO of Riot Games, Nicolo Laurent.

League of Legends Dominates in China

China is a very important market for Riot Games because of the popularity of PC Gaming, with 32% of game revenue and nearly 45% of gamers in the Chinese market, according to Niko Partners.

League of Legends is also incredibly popular there, with a lot of passionate fans for the video game, as well as the developer itself.

The League of Legends World Championship, the annual professional League of Legends world championship tournament, was held in China in 2020 and will be held there again this year.

More e-sports and world competitions have become extremely popular in China, with estimations predicting e-sports will make $1 billion this year due to China’s contribution, and it’s that market Riot Games wants to tap into.

In China we have a lot of passionate players for ‘League of Legends’ and for Riot Games.”

“So as a result, we would like to double down in China and continue to invest here including not only working on e-sports, but for example, game development and other things like entertainment.” – Leo Lin, VP and head of China for Riot Games.

Not only that, but Mobile Gaming has become increasingly popular in China and now accounts for the biggest revenue overall in the country.

Riot Games launched its own mobile game last year titled League of Legends: Wild Rift in some regions, yet it has to fully launch in China. This is a change for Riot Games but the company believes it is an important area to move forward with and used a familiar title to kickstart this transition.

Riot Games is 100% owned by Chinese gaming giant Tencent, however, the developer has stated Tencent respects it works independently and has not tried to influence anything with their products.
