Unsurprisingly, most people probably associate Nintendo branded games with their consoles. We’re all so used to playing as Mario on our DS’s or seeing Starfox on the Nintendo 64. However, Nintendo have recently begun exploring the mobile gaming market which has seen them have varied success. Games such as Mario Kart Tour have had critical and commercial success, giving us our Mario Kart fix on the go. Sadly, the likes of Dr Mario World didn’t quite get the same reception.

Dr Mario World was a reinterpretation of the classic Dr. Mario franchise. It wanted to inject new life into the IP by translating it for mobile gamers. Eliminating viruses by matching capsules didn’t quite attract a large enough audience, so the game has been discontinued. Strange how no-one was interested in a game about viruses in the current climate, right? Nintendo's Dr. Mario World mobile game is live and it's my new summer addiction - CNET

Dr Mario: The Failed Experiment

The official Dr Mario World Twitter account confirmed the news on Halloween. It seems that the game will no longer be available from November 1. Moreover, they thanked fans of the game and informed them that they will receive a notification when clicking on the game stating that it is no longer available. Very sad times.

It should also be noted that the developers will allow us to look back on the game with fond memories. Apparently, a web page called Dr Mario Memories is being formed to keep nostalgia alive for the gamers.

Upon initial release, it didn’t seem that Dr Mario World would succumb to this fate, especially considering it was downloaded over 2 million times in 3 days. Despite this, it still didn’t reach the expectation which other games such as Super Mario Run set. Doubling the downloads of Dr Mario World, it soon became clear that the demand for Dr Mario World wasn’t quite there. In addition this, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp got 4.9 million and 6 million downloads respectively. This only further deepened the knife into Dr Mario’s back that it wasn’t going to have the longevity it desired.

Conversely, Nintendo is planning to gift fans with a remastered version of one of their earlier games. Dr Mario 64 has been officially confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch which will support online multiplayer. Hopefully this will get certain fans back on their side.

Not only this, but be sure to have a look at some news on other Nintendo games here. Mario Party Superstars has gained great success so far, and its also the four year anniversary of Super Mario Odyssey! Similarly, check out everything go2games for Mario here!
