Rise of the Tomb Raider

The next in the Tomb Raider franchise receives an exciting new trailer!

A new trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider has recently appeared online, and showcases our heroin, Lara Croft, trekking through a blizzard whilst speaking of “discovering the secrets of the world,”. The trailer also lets the gamers know to look out for the first gameplay footage during Microsoft’s E3 conference on 15th June 2015. 

Developer Crystal Dynamics’ head of western studios recently talked about their partnership with Microsoft, who are developing the new game, and what it means for the future of the franchise. Rise of the Tomb Raider is most definitely set to feature at Microsoft’s E3 conference, but it’s doubtful that we’ll hear any more on the matter for the foreseeable future.

Star Wars: Battlefront

Flop or Top?

As I am sure you all know and sure most of you are excited for is the release of the new Star Wars Battlefront this December. This is a game that was teased at back at E3 a while back. As release date draws nearer we are hearing more news about the game. This news has also opened up the Pandora’s Box of controversy.

First I’m going to talk about the developers of the game. The game is being developed by DICE, the Swedish gaming company, responsible for giving us the Battlefield series. A popular FPS that personally brought me away from the Call of Duty franchise. They are well known for making big maps, use of vehicles and class based teamwork. This to me sounds perfect for the Star Wars Battlefront game, as the original games were focused on these ideals but perhaps on a simpler format to the Battlefield Franchise. I am sat in eager anticipation to see what they do with this, as to whether I will be able to play as a medic Trooper, Sniper Trooper or even a Demolition specialist. Now from recent teasers this looks to be highly plausible. However they are just engine footage. Not game-play so I am trying not to build my hopes up too high just in case. I am really hoping DICE won’t let fans down.

Now as you may not know the gaming side of the Star Wars franchise has been given to EA exclusively for the next ten years, which gives them full control over our beloved Sci-Fi Galaxy in gaming format. This makes me sceptical, I am sure if you typed into Google “EA meme” It will come up with a plethora of jokes about making money off DLC and releasing unfinished games. Scary? Damn right it is. However, I have faith in DICE. I never played Battlefield 4, so I never saw that release which I am told was buggy and botched. I did however play Battlefield 3 which I thought was a gaming marvel. I think DICE will stand firm on releasing the content that we deserve come release day and they have stated they work on features after release to work them in. They don’t take things out to re-box as DLC. We shall have to wait and see what December brings.

All that being said; space battles, single-player and prequel characters and maps will not feature in the game. [Insert long streams of profanity here]. I can understand the lack of prequel characters and forgive that. Although I am a fan of clone troopers and battle droids. I can see past their exclusion. However a lack of single player is part of this next gen multiplayer is key feel. Sometimes I like playing alone through a gritty campaign, lights out and fully immersed in the game. I also enjoy multiplayer. I want both from a game otherwise I will get bored and move on quickly. Finally, space battles. [Profanity again]…

I cannot understand why they would exclude space battles. It is Star Wars after all, the key is in the name. The films portray epic battles with TIE fighters and X-Wings clashing around the Death Star or Rebel Cruisers storming against Imperial Star Destroyers. But we are not going to be able to witness this from a gamers perspective, from the game that gave us so much hope. Just planetary battles for now. This feels like a bit of a step back after the glory of Battlefront 2’s space battles and I think many people will feel the same.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am still excited for this game. Just less excited knowing that it isn’t going to be a revamped Battlefront 2. This might just be nostalgia but I think that game was one of the best in the Star Wars franchise. Tell me what you think guys. Excited for the release? Bummed by the lack of something? Completely let down and no longer interested?

Five Nights at Freddy’s

The popular series is soon to become a film!

The Hollywood Reporter has said that the gruesomely popular horror game franchise, Five Nights at Freddy’s, has been bought by Warner Bros. as film rights. Last month, the third entry in the series arrived on PC and mobile devices, and this is the latest entry in developer Scott Cawthon’s horror game franchise. It has also been reported that production duties are to be held by KatzSmith Production’s Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, as well as Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment.

“The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” Cawthon has voiced.

“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith of KatzSmith Productions.

Assassin’s Creed – The Movie

French actress, Marion Cotillard, has signed on to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie!

French actress, Marion Cotillard, is now signed up and a part of the upcoming 2016 Assassin’s Creed film! Although her role has yet to be revealed by Ubisoft or, production company, The New Regency. This is according to Deadline. 

Michael Fassbender has already been cast previously for the film and will now be working alongside Cotillard, which they have previously, and recently, done in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This was also coincidentally directed by Justin Kurzel, who is directing the Assassin’s Creed film. 

Marion Cotillard, who you will probably recognise from Inception or The Dark Knight Rises, has also previously won an Oscar for her role as Édith Piaf in 2007’s La Vie en Rose. Michael Fassbender was also nominated for an Oscar for his 2013 role in 12 Years a Slave. We’ve recently found out that production has officially started for the Assassin’s Creed film and they will be shooting soon!

The film will hit cinemas on 21st December 2016 and is produced by New Regency and Twentieth Century Fox. This is exactly a week after the Star Wars spin-off film enters the cinema. 

Ubisoft will be retaining it’s creative control through it’s Ubisoft Motion Pictures Group, and are also working on five other films which are based on their games. These are the Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Far Cry, Watch Dogs and Rabbids franchises.

Disney Infinity reckons that they sold more than Skylanders last year

Activision disagrees!

It’s all going on here. The competition is heating up between these two! Disney released a statement recently, claiming that Disney Infinity was the best-selling toys-to-life brand in 2014, but Skylanders publisher Activision disagrees.

“Skylanders continues its leadership position as the #1 kids video game franchise globally as well as in the U.S. by wide margins. As a global franchise in 2014, Skylanders is 30% bigger than its nearest competitor. And Skylanders Trap Team outsold its nearest competitor globally by 17%,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has said. “As the creators of the ‘Toys to Life’ category, we are thrilled to continue to lead it for the third consecutive year”.

The NPD’s data has shown that Disney Infinity franchise sales increased by sixteen percent, compared to the previous year during the critical November – December holiday period. This is what Disney has based it’s claim on. Disney has also claimed that Disney Infinity’s market share in the category increased from forty three percent to forty seven percent, and that it outsold its nearest competitor (Skylanders) in both total starter packs sales and total sales revenue.

With this at hand, Activision maintains that Skylanders continued to lead the toys-to-life category for the third consecutive year, based on physical game unit sell-through data, according to GfK, NPD, and Activision internal estimates. Disney Infinity compares to Skylanders at present and is most likely to get a boost later on this year with, which Disney teased back in August last year, the addition of the toys from the Star Wars universe.
