Go2Games Interview – Nathan Hawthorne

We’re catching up with artist Nathan Hawthorne, after MCM Comic Con London last weekend, to see how he found the convention and how his wonderful work went down!

1) Hi there Nathan!  It was great to see you at your stall over the weekend. How did you find Comic Con?

It was fantastic! probably the best one I’ve been to. I loved the new layout, and it worked well for the sheer amount of different exhibitors and artists, and of course all the amazing cosplayers.

2) What would you say was your favourite part of the weekend?

I would have to say I had two favourite parts. One was seeing all the cosplayers and their amazing creations, and the other is definitely chatting with different people of all different tastes, interests and experiences throughout the day!

3) Did you manage to see any of the other artists’ work? If so, whose did you enjoy the most?

 I didn’t have my usual helpers so I didn’t get out and about except for before sessions unfortunately. But from what I did see, I liked the look of Gyzra ink, Anaseed man and Kirucomics’s work.

4) Did you find that there was a lot of interest in your work?

I’d like to think there was a good amount of interest since a lot of people came by and had a look and a chat. But at the same time I acknowledge that my work isn’t to everyone’s taste – we’re all different in the end!

5) Was there a certain piece of yours that grabbed attention?

Forbidden fruits and Flying with Wales, were popular posters/postcards. Even I’ve got one of each up on my wall!  Hopefully I can keep building on my skills and make something even better for next time.

6) How did you find the overall atmosphere of the weekend?

An excellent, easy going atmosphere, and everyone I spoke to was really friendly – and that includes you lovely people at Go2Games who passed by to say hi!

7) Are you excited for the next Comic Con convention?

Extremely. My next convention this size should be the October MCM Comic Con. I’ll be releasing Arksong chapter 3 either before or at that convention, so I’ll be looking forward to sharing and discussing it with new and old readers. If you missed out on a chance to get something from my table at the convention, my comics and posters as well as some other merchandise are available at my online store:

Brogan Coral

Brogan is one artist who we truly love the work of! She will also be showcasing her incredible work this weekend in Comic Village, at MCM Comic Con London. Go2Games managed to snap Brogan up ahead of the event for a quick interview!…

1) Tell us a little about yourself, Brogan!
My name is Brogan and I’m from Manchester in the north west of England! I go under Brogan Coral for my illustration work. I went to university to study illustration, and since graduating I’ve been self publishing my own little comics and making a bunch of other things that I sell at comic conventions all around the country and online

2) When did you enter the world of art and what inspired you?
My introduction to the art world was actually significantly influenced by video games! When I was about 10 I got a Dreamcast for christmas, and one of the games I got with it was Sonic Adventure. I absolutely loved it at the time and it inspired me to start creating my own characters and drawing the characters from the game. I sometimes look back at the stuff I drew back then and it’s unsurprisingly cringe inducing, but every artist has to start somewhere!

3) Have you showcased your artwork at other events?
Yep, my first convention I exhibited at was Thought Bubble comics festival in 2012, and since then I’ve been to various other conventions around the country. Most of them are the MCM comic cons!

4) Do you have a favourite artist?
This is always a really hard question for any artist, I think! But if I had to narrow it down to just one, I’d have to say Junko Mizuno. Her art has that cute colourful look to it, but it’s also quite twisted and dark at the same time. She has done a series of manga based on her own twisted version of fairy tales which I love!

5) Are you a gamer at all and, if so, what are your top three favourite games?
Yep! My top favourites are really hard to choose, but here goes!
– Dark Souls (I adore the atmosphere, designs, and the unforgiving with highly rewarding gameplay)
– Jak 2 (I absolutely love the character designs and gameplay)
– Sonic Adventure 2 (For pure nostalgia!)

6) PS4 or Xbox One?!
I’d have to say PS4, as that’s the one that I play the most! (Thanks to the ridiculous amount of hours I’ve spent on FFXIV…)

7) Will we expect to see you at Comic Con in the future?
Certainly! You can find me at table CL13 in the Comic Village in the upcoming London MCM. I will also be at Manchester MCM in July, and a bunch of other conventions. Feel free to check out my Tumblr for a full list!

Go2Games meets Simeon Aston!

Simeon Aston is the creator and illustrator of the Cyberpunk stories, Metal Made Felsh (MMF), and he’ll be gracing MCM Comic Con London this weekend with his incredible artwork, in Comic Village! We were lucky enough to have a chat with Simeon ahead of the convention, and here is everything you need to know about Simeon, his artwork, and gaming…

So..

I’ve been working as a freelance artist for around 10 years .

Early influences were concept artists Ralph Mcquarrie, H.R Giger (favourite artist), also Syd Mead and Mobius..

Movies – Bladerunner (My all time favourite), I also love  ‘Alien,Terminator 2, Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones and Big Trouble in Little China.

My work is also heavily inspired by Japanese Anime – Ghost in the shell, Akira and Ninja scroll.

So naturally my work has an old-school retro feel to it. Most of the people I talk to at conventions who love my work have the same tastes in movies and art.

I’ve been showcasing MMF in London for about 4 years mostly at MCM and LFCC.

I’ve been a PlayStation gamer since PS1.

I’m currently playing Battlefield: Hardline with my online crew. Best game this year for me has to be Alien Isolation

Top three games.. That’s a hard one since I’ve been gaming for decades, but three games that spring to mind are..

Metal gear solid 3, GTA 4 ,and Mass effect 2.

so ye, I’m gonna be at most big conventions in London for the rest of the year promoting MMF as we move into phase 2 of the story, and expand the universe me and Jeremy have created.

cryoclaire shares her weird and wonderful world with Go2Games

We were privileged enough to catch up with artist cryoclaire, ahead of this weekend’s MCM Comic Con London, where she’ll be showcasing her incredible artwork! Here’s what she had to say…

1)      Tell us a little about yourself, cryoclaire!

My name is Mary, but I go as Cryoclaire on the Internet! I’m from Latvia, but I live and work in Horsham just south of London. For the past few years I’ve been working on series of comic strips set in a hilariously miserable cyberpunk universe called “Drugs and Wires” which I should have on me at MCM. These days “Drugs and Wires” is finally shaping into a  webcomic

( http://www.drugsandwires.fail/ ), thanks to my collaborator Io Black who took on the writing and editing. Most of my free time now is spent drawing – not that I’m complaining!

2)      When did you enter the world of art and what inspired you?

I’ve always been drawing, so there was never a conscious decision to “start” in the first place – but I do remember the moment  I stopped drawing animals and stuff normal kids would draw, and switched onto the “weird stuff”: for me that was seeing Gorillaz on TV for the first time. I was 12 at a time, and their video for Clint Eastwood ended up defining a lot of my art taste.

3)      Have you showcased your artwork at other events?

 This is my third MCM, but I haven’t attended any other events so far. But I will be attending Thought Bubble in November, and I’m hoping to have some new books out by then.

4)      Do you have a favourite artist?

Jamie Hewlett is my favourite artist to this day – I will never get bored of his artstyle. But I have many favourites, and it’s kind of hard to pick…Sophie Campbell, Tsutomu Nihei, Ashley Wood. One of my recent artist discoveries is All-New Ghost Rider volume 1: Tradd Moore’s artstyle blew me away. 

5)      Are you a gamer at all and, if so, what are your top three favourite games?

Despite working in the games industry, I don’t have much time to play games these days! I still love my 3DS and play loads of handheld titles – Ace Attorney series are my all time fave. Shin Megami Tensei IV’s been my go-to 3Ds game as of late. Alice and Alice:Madness Returns are the absolute winner when it comes to artstyle, and Skyrim wins in hundreds of hours invested. Ok, I’ve definitely listed more than three games, not helping the “artists are bad at math” stereotype there at all!

6)      PS4 or Xbox One?!

 Well, I do want to try Bloodborne at some point, sooo PS4? (but also PC GAMER MASTERRACE etc)

7)      Will we expect to see you at Comic Con in the future?

Most likely, at least at the London one. Thought I’d love to visit some in Midlands, too at some point!

Nathan Hawthorne

We caught up with Nathan Hawthorne, a 22 year old from East London who has a penchant for Illustration, Concept, and Fine Art. His work is out of this world, and he’ll be showcasing it next weekend at London MCM Comic Con! We managed to catch him beforehand for a quick interview!

1) Hi Nathan, great to meet you! Tell us a little about yourself..

“I’m a 22 year old Artist from East London and a lover of all things fantasy and sci-fi! Although I studied Fine Art,  I find myself drawn more to illustration and design, and so find myself working on art for video games, board games and comics more often than galleries. I work both in Oil paints and Photoshop.”

2) When did you enter the world of art and what inspired you?

“My real interest in art took of when I was 14. I bought the collectors edition of ‘Guild Wars: Nightfall’ (the PC MMORPG), and included was an art book. I was amazed by the artwork and how the designs were translated into the the game and I wanted to be able to create work just like that. I poured much of my time into improving my skills and I still try to put in as much effort as possible to this day.”

“My first real entrance, I would say, would be working on illustrations for the ‘Incredible Expeditions’ board game, which ended up a great success on Kickstarter. From this I’ve moved on to be a concept artist for ‘INT’, an indie video game currently in development. Of course there are also my comic projects, ‘Arksong’, ‘Shroud of Light’  and the upcoming ‘Chronicles of the Novus Aevum’. 3) Have you showcased your artwork at other events?

“Yes. My first show was last year’s May MCM Comic Con, which I then followed by the July London Anime and Gaming Con (LAGC), October MCM Comic Con, November MCM Comic Con (Birmingham) and the recent February LAGC. These were all great events and I’m hoping to go to even more in the next 12 months – there are few better ways to spend the weekend!”

4) Do you have a favourite artist?

“This is a tough question…  I have many favourite artists both traditional and digital, so I’ll cheat and pick one from each category.

For traditional: John Martin. He was an oil painter (and printer) who created these huge, dramatic fantasy scenes with great composition and movement.

For Digital: Daniel Dociu. After all his environment concept art was what got me into the art game in the first place.”

5) Are you a gamer at all and, if so, what are your top three favourite games?

“I most certainly am!

2.Guild wars 2

3. Remember me

Yes, I repeat, my favourite game is Final Fantasy XIII.”

6) PS4 or Xbox One?!

“PS4. I’ll… get one eventually.”

7) Will we expect to see you at Comic Con in the future?

“Definitely! I’ll be at the coming MCM Comic Con on May 22-24 in the Comic Village (table CK16). Be sure to pass by and say hi!

After that I’ll be at a number of Comic Cons and events up and down the country. I tend to announce where I’ll be on Facebook and Twitter, so keep an eye out for me!”.
