This year saw the return of the Summer Game Fest which showcased a variety of games to the public the event was held on June 9th and showed off a variety of games including Call of duty Modern warfare 2, Street fighter 6, The Last of Us Part 1, Gotham knights and more!

The event creator and host of Summer Game Fest Geoff Keighley has said that this year’s show was the biggest Summer Games Fest in terms of viewership and social media engagement, this was a record 27 million global live streams which is an 8% increase from 2021.

The event attracted 3.5 peak global live stream viewers and had over 6000 co-streamers, on twitter there was a 100% increase in conversation and the hashtag “The Game Awards” was up by 69%

While impressive there is still some ways to go before it rivals Geoff Keighley’s other awards show “The Game Awards” which had 85 million live streams back in December 2021

The majority of the Summer Game Fest took place from June 9-12 but announcements were made over a matter of weeks as well and earlier on June 2nd PlayStation had it’s state of play event which showcased games such as Street fighter 6, Final Fantasy 16 and the long-awaited Resident Evil 4 Remake. The Xbox and Bethesda showcase on June 12th had their own games to show off such as the first look into Starfield Gameplay and Redfall gameplay.

Next year there will be another Summer Game Fest which Geoff Keighley confirmed will be both a digital and in-person event “I’m excited to share that Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023 as a digital and an in-person event, to bring the gaming community together,”

It’s unclear whether this means that the Summer Game Fest will be open to the public or not but if it is it would mark the first time that the Summer Game Fest can be attended physically as previous years were digital showcases.

On top of that E3 which was the go-to for many top announcements will be coming back in 2023 as the E3 owner entertainment software association has said during this month that they are planning to bring back the long-running gaming event in 2023

With a variety of game shows taking place as well as various companies such as PlayStation during their own showcases it’s unclear just how much there will be to show but it’s sure to be competitive and exciting year for gaming in general.

In the name of transparency, game developers and companies have recently committed to sharing their salaries. Alongside the rampant worker abuse allegations and anti-union sentiment of big companies like Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft, there have also been massive company-wide lay-offs from large companies, but I’ve got a feeling we’ll be covering more on that another day! Possibly today, we’ll see.

In addition to the salary reveals promoting transparency, they in my opinion, also highlight the vast wealth inequality between designers and CEOs. Essentially calling for reevaluation and discussion of why certain roles should or shouldn’t pay more than others.

The hashtag #GameDevPaidMe is currently trending on Twitter, mostly covering the pay developers and designers make per year of work. Below, you’ll find some from Christopher Giroir, a software engineer for Airbnb with 7 years of past experience at Activision Blizzard.

From what I’ve seen so far in the hashtag section, most salaries in the late 2000s and early 2010s average around $25k to $45k a year. That’s around £18,850 to £33,930 for us limeys. It’s good that more recent salaries have been heading up to the hundreds of thousands, but most of the salaries are PEANUTS compared to the literal millions (and hundreds of millions in the case of Bobby Kotick) made by many CEOs who don’t always necessarily put in the same level of effort into a product.

While most companies are quite closed-off regarding publicizing employment salaries, Nintendo has been open with an annual report of it’s worker salaries that released last year, so gold star to comrade Nintendo for that!

In other news, SEGA has reportedly asked over 600 employees to retire, also cutting their salary recently, so in that sense, I guess SEGA really does what Nintendon’t!

Christmas Shopper Simulator
GAME launches this season appropriate simulator for PC and Mac

GAME has created it’s very own simulator game which is aptly named ‘Christmas Shopper Simulator’! It includes abilities  such as falling over, buying presents, walking up escalators and halting abruptly. This is GAME’s version of Goat Simulator and looks “awful”ly brilliant!

“At GAME we are passionate about two things: gaming and shopping so, in our first foray into game development, we’ve combined the two,” said director of shopper simulation development Fred Prego. He went on to state that “Whilst we have games that prepare us for zombie invasions or Premier League football matches, there is nothing to get us ready for the equally daunting experience of Christmas shopping – and we’re very proud to have filled that gap in the market.”

“Of course it’s ridiculous, but it’s so brilliantly addictive we can’t believe someone hasn’t made it already! One warning though: Christmas Shopper Simulator can feel so realistic that you might believe you have already done your Christmas shopping. You haven’t. Don’t forget to go shopping for real!”, which Prego also stated.

For PC and Mac, the game is absolutely FREE from the GAME website and was created by Freak Storm Games.

 GAME’s very own app now comes equipped with a scanner
The ability to now scan the front covers of games!

Good morning! For those of you who want the world of gaming at your fingertips, then this could be the app for you..

For those of you who use GAME’s smartphone app, you may or may not be aware that it has now come equipped with a scanner which will enable you to scan the front covers of games to access various information and discounts. Pretty neat, eh?

This grand new functionality is called ‘Scan It!’ and uses your smartphone’s camera to scan the front cover of a game, instead of it’s barcode. Not only this, it’ll then offer you a ‘personalised price’ depending on your current trade-in credit and Reward account balance. You will also be given a wad of other information regarding the scanned title, including images and trailers. Plus, it works with digital games sold on cards!

“We are committed to giving our customers the best possible experience, so alongside great value, we’re excited to make shopping with us truly interactive by bringing their favourite games to life in front of their eyes,” remarks GAME’s chief digital officer Ian Chambers. Well said!
