Have you been sat there wondering why Metroid Prime 4 is taking so long to be released? We certainly are. However, now we might finally have our answer, as it is supposedly ‘indicative of Nintendo and Japanese companies as whole’ to take their time. This is all according to former Retro Studios staffer Jack Matthews.

Matthews was the Lead Technical Engineer on the Metroid Prime trilogy, so we reckon he knows what he’s talking about. Recently, he spoke to the Kiwi Talkz podcast about their development. In this discussion, he talked about developing for a publisher in the West compared to Japan, pointing out that the Japanese are more likely to take risks with prototypes before full production. In his opinion, this is a much better way for the process to work.

“A lot of the way that deals get structured is that Western publishers want- when you’re going to do a prototype- they want to do an entire long-form agreement of the entire game before you start the prototype”.

“It ends up negating a lot of what you’re doing in the prototype anyway because you still have to figure out how much the whole thing is going to cost for this thing that you really don’t know much about”.

This shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise to be fair. Nintendo have always taken risks with prototypes, as many of the games are made by internal teams.

Matthews continued with his belief that this is something Western publishers should consider implementing

“Nintendo know that that’s the right way to go. It’s all about risk/ reward, where you put your risk and where you see your reward”.

Adversely, western publishers don’t tend to trust developers as much, and are often scared that a developer could disband with a prototype and use another publisher. Is there no trust in the industry nowadays? These are some quite strong opinions from Matthews, but who are we to judge. A veteran in the industry, he clearly knows what he’s talking about. Additionally, it’s ideal that we start to mention what exactly we know about Metroid Prime 4. Check out the trailer down below

Everything We Know About Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4

Metroid Prime 4 is an upcoming video game developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It was announced during an online showcase at E3 2017, and was reportedly initially developed by Bandai Namco Studios

Here’s a quick little summary:

What is it? A brand new Metroid Prime game

What can I play it on? Nintendo Switch

When can I play it? No release date just yet, but don’t expect it for a while

Straight to the point, right? Unfortunately, that’s all we really know at the moment. Obviously, the game will be a FPS shooter, but in terms of story there’s not much to go on. Come back here when we have more details. In the meantime, check out this article explaining what else could be on the horizon for Metroid fans.
Wanna give the new Metroid Dread a test run? Well, now you can! Nintendo announced it is releasing a free demo of its recent release today- just in time for Halloween.

Metroid Dread is developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD and is the first mainline 2D instalment of the Metroid franchise in over 20 years, so this free demo really is a treat!

Metroid Dread Demo

Metroid Dread sees players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she investigates the source of a mysterious transmission on the planet ZDR and concludes the main story arc that started with the original game in 1986.

The Metroid Dread demo is available in all regions with the official Nintendo of America, Europe, and Japan tweeting about the demo being live on the Nintendo eShop to download.

This gives newcomers to the Metroid series the perfect chance to test out the game that is causing up a storm before they make the big decision to purchase it fully.

The new instalment of the Metroid franchise is currently doing so well that it has already almost outsold every other instalment in Japan within the first week of its release, and it even made news in the UK by having the biggest launch for the Metroid series ever!

The new instalment of the Metroid franchise is doing so well, it’s already outsold its predecessors.

Earlier this week I wrote about how Metroid Dread made history by having the biggest launch ever here in the UK. It has now had an even better week in Japan and has already outsold the majority of the franchise in its first week.

This data comes from data recording sites such as Famitsu and Games Data Library that keep a record of sales in Japan.

Metroid in Japan

The video game developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD was released on October 8 on Nintendo Switch and has ranked up 86,798 physical sales, becoming the best-selling game of the week in just 3 days.

Historically, the Metroid franchise has struggled to sell well in Japan, with the most lifetime sales being 155,528 for Metroid: Fusion on record since 1995. Yet with the build-up and release of Metroid Dread, Japan used TV advertisements to help promote the game during prime-time TV shows, keeping the hype for the new release to stay alive.

Metroid Dread commercial during Monday Late Show (pretty famous variety show in Japan) – nice to see how much love this game is getting worldwide #MetroidDread pic.twitter.com/DGszrsSZre

— John Ricciardi (@johntv) October 11, 2021

And now, in less than a week, Metroid Dread has managed to outsell nearly every Metroid title before it, excluding Metroid Fusion. It has also caused a surge in sales for other titles in the franchise.

The data collected by Famitsu excludes digital sales, and as stated in the previous article for Metroid Dread’s UK sales, Nintendo doesn’t reveal its digital numbers, but from looking at the eShop, it is clear to see Metroid Dread is an international success.

Metroid Dread was released at the end of last week and has already beaten records for any previous Metroid game.

Samus Aran is finally getting the recognition she rightfully deserves.

The action-adventure game developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD was released on October 8 on Nintendo Switch, and according to GameIndustry.biz‘s journalist, Christopher Dring, even excluding the digital download numbers, it is the biggest launch for the franchise in UK chart history.

Metroid Dread concludes the main story arc that began with the original game, first released in 1986, and players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the planet ZDR.

Metroid’s Previous Sales

Because of this success, Metroid Dread is now the 5th biggest Switch launch of this year, just after Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Monster Hunter Rise and Pokemon Snap. It is no. 3 currently in the UK charts, just after last week’s other two big releases, FIFA 22, and Far Cry 6, which are both on multiple platforms.

The biggest sale launch previously in the Metroid franchise was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on the Wii, which ultimately ended up slowing down in sales after its initial release. Metroid Dread has also sold 3 times more than its predecessor, Metroid: Samus Return in 2017, the remake of the original from 1991.

Nintendo does not reveal its digital sales numbers, however, the game has topped the eShop charts in multiple regions which gives a slight hint to how the game is performing.

Metroid Prime 3 was originally going to be an open-world game before being faced with hardware complications

Bryan Walker, who was Retro’s director of development and a producer before his departure in 2012, shared the details during a lengthy video interview with Kiwi Talkz. According to Walker, Metroid Prime’s series director Mark Pacini had come up with never-seen-before plans for the third game in the Metroid Prime series. Some aspects of this concept were actually prototyped, but ultimately the vision of an open-world Metroid game was scrapped due to hardware difficulties.

In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, Walker has talked with regards to the development of the scrapped game in which Samus’ ship would be available to explore in an open world fashion. He has said, “We wanted to a great degree leverage the ship as a playable asset, and we had that to some degree in Prime 3 but Mark [Pacini, Metroid Prime series director] was thinking much more ambitiously,” Walker explained during the interview. “There was also an open world that was much less linear that he was proposing and the team was excited about.” Sadly, these plans proved too ambitious for the relatively limited hardware of the Wii, in comparison to the competitors of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“We knew what the Xbox 360 was going to have, when knew what the PS3 was going to have and the initial specs we were looking at [for Wii] were not competitive from a hardware and memory standpoint… there were all these disadvantages,” he said.

Walker added how he felt Retro Studios may have “fallen short” of the goals he had, in regards to the inclusion of an open-world design within Prime 3, and the title not being able to “expand the formula”. Despite this, the team is still incredibly proud of the third entry and thinks it’s a “fantastic” game. Though, he still does wonder how fans would have received this “open-world” idea if it was released.

While neither Walker nor Pacini are at Retro Studios today, the concept could shape towards where Metroid Prime 4 could go. There are rumors that Nintendo have in which they hope to remaster the original 2002 Metroid Prime for the Switch next year. Additionally, Retro Studios is at work with Metroid Prime 4, though it’s unclear of when a specific release date. In the meantime, players can look forward to the 2D-style Metroid Prime Dread, which is set for release alongside the new Nintendo Switch OLED model later this month.
