No more secret spending on your card…

Over time, many things come and go. Still, one everlasting certainty is the ever-present stories of kids using their parent’s cards in secret, purchasing microtransactions and braving the consequences down the line. Well, fear not, parents, Xbox have just introduced an update that gives you more control over your child’s spending habits. With the new update, you’ll be able to add money to your child’s account directly through the app, which they can then spend as they’d like on games or in-game items. The new settings can be adjusted through the Xbox Family Settings app on iOS and Android.

According to the Xbox blog, you can view your child’s account balance and spending history. You can also turn on an “Ask to Buy” feature that will let your kid request a purchase that they’d like, and then you can either approve (and add funds) or deny the request. The blog also suggests parents may want to integrate this system into things like a reward structure for finishing chores or doing well in school.

The increments shown for adding money to your child’s account are £10, £15, £25, £50, £75 and £100. The family settings app also allows you to manage settings like creating child accounts, setting screen time limits, and managing who your kids can play with online.

Everything we know so far…

The sequel to the classic RPG Skyrim has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement in 2018. Another E3 has passed us, and once again, we did not hear anything new regarding the upcoming Elder Scrolls instalment. All we know for sure right now is that the game is definitely still in development. It is nearing 10 years since the game’s predecessor, Skyrim was released, and 3 years since the successor was announced. Yet, we have not received even a rough release date.

From E3, 2021, we found out that Bethesda is currently focusing on its upcoming Sci-Fi RPG, Starfield. Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirmed that the game will indeed be coming after Starfield. Starfield is due for a November 2022 release date. This, alongside the fact that Howard also recently said to consider Elder Scrolls 6 as still in the ‘design phase’, means we likely won’t see Elder Scrolls 6 until at the earliest late 2024. Realistically, the wait could even be a couple of years longer than that, depending on where they really are in the production process. Ultimately, the wait for Elder Scrolls 6 is likely to be a long one, longer than anything we had anticipated after the announcement in 2018.

A troubling thought for PlayStation fans of the Elder Scrolls franchise is the possibility of the new instalment being an Xbox exclusive after waiting all this time. Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft, and worryingly, Xbox boss Phil Spencer affirmed that any future Bethesda games will be exclusive to platforms “where Game Pass exists” (i.e. Xbox and PC). We have seen this come to fruition with Starfield’s avoidance of the Sony console. However, it is not all doom and gloom for PlayStation users. It is possible that Elder Scrolls may not fall under this ‘Xbox Game Pass’ exclusivity umbrella if Sony has already secured the games on its platform. As also noted by Spencer, “there are contractual obligations that we’re going to see through, as we always do in every one of these instances.”

Game content…

All we have received (officially) thus far is as little as a logo (see below).

We do, however, know that Elder Scrolls 6 will utilise Bethesda’s recently overhauled Creation Engine, as will Starfield. Speaking at the Develop: Brighton conference, Todd Howard stated it’s been “a significant overhaul,” adding that “it’s taken us longer than we would have liked, but it’s going to power everything we’re doing with Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6. When people see the results, they’ll hopefully be as happy as we are with what’s on the screen and also how we can go about making our games.”

In general, we can expect improved graphics and bugginess, more fluid combat (taking advantage of new consoles) and, lastly, replayability. During an interview with IGN, Howard noted that in the same manner as Skyrim, they aim to make a game that players play for the next decade.

Where will Elder Scrolls 6 be set?

It is likely that, as with the last games, the new instalment will also be set in the continent of Tamriel. Maybe a new unexplored region of Tamriel? Valenwood, Elsweyr and Black Marsh are the biggest places left to explore. On the other hand, the game may revisit some old regions such as High Rock, Hammerfell, Morrowind, Cyrodil, and Skyrim.

“It’s about finding the right team and the right opportunity”…

Killer Instinct is a series of fighting video games originally created by Rare and published by Midway, Nintendo, and Microsoft Studios. The original Killer Instinct was released for arcades in 1994; the game was then released for the Super NES and Game Boy in 1995. Its popularity led to a sequel, Killer Instinct 2, released for arcades in 1996; the game was then released as Killer Instinct Gold for the Nintendo 64.

The most recent instalment was the series reboot Killer Instinct (2013) for the Xbox One.

Microsoft head of gaming Phil Spencer has now discussed the possibility of a return for the Killer Instinct series.

During the latest Dropped Frames podcast on Wednesday, he stated, “there are so many good games in our catalogue that we’d love to visit…the response when we redid KI at the launch of Xbox One was fantastic.”

“I will just say, [Xbox Game Studios head] Matt [Booty] and I have discussed many times KI and where we would like to go with it, and it’s not out of our minds that—it might be out of our minds—but it’s in our hearts and in our minds that we want to continue to do something with KI.

“It’s about finding the right team and the right opportunity,” Spencer added, “but it is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we’re not doing more with KI because we love the franchise and the community response.”

In a 2019 Game Informer interview, Booty noted, “It’s been a few years now, but I was fortunate enough to work with the team who rebooted Killer Instinct,” he said. “That really came about because there was an energy and a passion for it.

“Those are the scenarios that I love, and I think that those tend to work out a little better than trawling through a spreadsheet going, ‘ah, nobody’s done this in a while, maybe we could reboot that one’.

“I think when somebody has a personal passion for it, it can really work out.”

This comes as great news for any fans of the KI series; a next-gen instalment could be on the cards.

The latest character addition to the new Killer Instinct season!

Kan-Ra is a sorcerer who hails from Babylon and is 2,500 years old (you have to hand it to the guy…that’s pretty impressive!), but has been cursed with dark magic which has caused the poor chap to rot. He is also the latest character addition in the free-to-play online fighting game, Killer Instinct.

On November 21, a live stream showcasing game-play footage will air. Adam Isgreen (Microsoft Studios creative director) also clarified the schedule for new character releases each month. ‘”Every month” could more accurately be represented as ‘every calendar month’ instead of every 30 days,” Isgreen said.

Killer Instinct shipped on the same day that the Xbox One was launched and had a character available to play for free. Microsoft has a plan to continually update the game’s roster.

Double Helix (Killer Instinct’s developer) was acquired by Amazon earlier this year. In light of this, Microsoft have said that the franchise, which it owns, will continue on and that the game will not be affected. Phew!
