Official Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulators for the Nintendo Switch appear to have leaked online

Last year there were rumours that Nintendo was planning to bring Game Boy games to its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service to join the existing libraries of NES and SNES titles, plus the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis catalogues available as part of the Expansion pack subscription tier.

Now, a leak seems to provide evidence that Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, and Game Boy Advance games might be coming to the service soon.

According to Twitter user: @trashbandatcoot files have been leaked onto 4chan which include a Nintendo-developed GBA emulator codenamed “Sloop” and a Game Boy emulator called “Hiyoko”. This lines up with what was previously rumoured. In early 2019, dataminer OatmealDome discovered that the NES Switch Online app contained references to four emulators – Kachikachi, Canoe, Hiyoko and Count, suggesting that two or three new consoles could be coming to Nintendo Switch Online

So Nintendo's official Game Boy Advance emulator for the Nintendo Switch just leaked. Now it's just a matter of waiting for NSO to add GBA. pic.twitter.com/mEJcKrRtzL

— Trash_Bandatcoot (@trashbandatcoot) April 18, 2022

Developed by NERD

Both of the new leaked emulators appear to be created by Nintendo of Europe’s NERD (Nintendo European Research & Development) team. The Paris-based subsidiary has been responsible for much of the company’s emulation efforts in recent years. The team led the development for the Gamecube emulation technology, which was used in the creation of Super Mario 3D All-Stars. The team has also found success in developing other technologies and features for Nintendo products. This includes a heart rate detection system that uses the Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, made for Ring Fit Adventure. Additionally, they have been working on deep learning technologies for Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training.

Games and Features

The leak lists 40 Game Boy Advance games included in the app, including: Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Pokemon Pinball, and many more. As for the Game Boy Color though, @Mondo_Mega has also shared that they’ve only discovered a few titles so far including Super Mario Land, Link’s Awakening DX, Tetris, and Qix.

However, this doesn’t confirm that these games will be released on Switch Online. They could likely be titles that NERD are using to test the emulator’s capabilities, and not every tested title will end up on the service for certain. Ultimately which ones will make the cut will be determined by Nintendo.

According to known dataminer OatmealDome, the emulator also appears to include netplay support for link cables. If true each Switch could emulate two Game Boys at the same time and simulate a Link Cable between them.

Earlier, there was video proof of the said Game Boy (Advance) emulator supposedly running on the console. However, the account that posted it was quickly deleted.

The library of GBA games they've tested for this thing is massive. Tested is the key word; doesn't mean they'll all actually launch on the service. Yellow = in the rom folder at some point but not in the leaked build.

There's one other game with evidence of being tested though- https://t.co/QQDBDcdAZp pic.twitter.com/lGSB4Mg7Gt

— MondoMega (@Mondo_Mega) April 18, 2022

Whatever the case, It seems likely that we could be hearing official word on the addition of Game Boy and GBA games to the Nintendo Online Subscription Expansion Pack, in the near future.

For those who still play on their Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, unfortunately we’ve got some bad news for you. This is because Nintendo have recently announced they will closing the online storefront for both consoles by 2023. In fact, it looks like it could even be a lot sooner than that. Yikes.

Why would they do such a thing though? I thought Nintendo were keen on preserving all of their previous console iterations? This is what the official post had to say on the procedure to ease players out:

“As of May 23, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. As of August 29, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a Nintendo eShop Card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. However, it will still be possible to redeem download codes until late March 2023”.

Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Players Still Able To Play Games After March 2023

Thankfully, it looks like both consoles will still be playable once the stores shut. In all honesty, that is not much of an achievement, nevertheless it means it isn’t all completely doom and gloom, is it? Here’s what Nintendo had to say upon the matter:

“Even after late March 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates and enjoy online play on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems”.

Obviously, all good things must come to a close in the end we suppose. The 3DS is eleven years old and the Wii U ten, so their stores were always going to close eventually. However, that doesn’t mean we still can’t be sad about it. In fact, there is one massive reason as to why it’s more disappointing than you may have initially thought…

NSO Stops Players From Experiencing Their Greatest Games

This is the truly devastating news. The shopfronts for both the 3DS and the Wii U offered users the ability to purchase and own many of Nintendo’s greatest every games. Unfortunately, this is something you’re not able to do since the company switched to a subscription model with Nintendo Switch Online.

This was a problem Nintendo saw coming. This post was recently added to their FAQ section online:

“Across our Nintendo Switch Online membership plans, over 130 classic games are currently available in growing libraries for various legacy systems. The games are often enhanced with new features such as online play. We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise. We currently have no plans to offer classic content in other ways”.

How disappointing. What do you think about all this then? Were you still an avid 3DS user? Let us know in the comments below!
Announced previously at the last Nintendo Switch Direct, Nintendo has confirmed that it will be adding N64’s Paper Mario to its Online Extension Pack in a week’s time on December 10.

The classic role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems will be the first new N64 title added to the Expansion Pack tier following its launch in October.

N64 Paper Mario

The N64 Extension Pack membership offers Switch users the chance to play a growing library of classic Nintendo 64 games on their Switch. When it first launched, nine games were available including Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Yoshi’s Story, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and more. Paper Mario will be the first new title since then.

Paper Mario was amongst the 7 titles confirmed to be added to the N64 Extension Pack at a later date. The other titles include Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Snap, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Mario Golf and F-Zero X.

Twitter user MondoMega recently analysed data from the N64 app and has worked out at least 38 games are scheduled to be added in the future, so it’s likely we will be seeing even more games after the 7 titles already confirmed are released.

Paper Mario will be added to the 64 Extension Pack on December 10.

Nintendo Switch Online Has Taken Nintendo Switch Users By Storm

Starting off with only 9 million Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers in 2019 and jumping to 15 million in early 2020 and 26 million in late 2020, there has been a significant leap in 2021, with 32 million Nintendo Switch Online users.

At the last Nintendo Switch Direct, they announced an N64 expansion pack as part of the Nintendo Switch Online membership, which includes a library of N64 games ported to the Nintendo Switch, such as Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and many more old-time classics, with the notorious, soon to be added is Paper Mario.

At the Animal Crossing New Horizons Direct, Nintendo added a lot of new features that many fans were excited for, Happy Home Paradise DLC included in the Expansion pack and Nintendo Switch Online. For those who didn’t already have Nintendo Switch online, the expansion pack turned out to be a pretty good deal at approximately £24 on offer over the weekend. For those who planned to buy the Happy Home Paradise DLC, that was also a great deal considering the actual DLC was £22.

The expansion pack includes Happy Home Paradise, Nintendo Switch Online and The N64 pack for less than £34.99 which happens to be the original price for Nintendo Switch Online with the expansion pack.

Love The Nintendo Switch? Check out these games

Furthermore, fans of Paper Mario have constantly complained over these years over Nintendo’s Paper Mario creations since The Thousand Year Door, (personally I’ve enjoyed them, besides sticker star and colour splash…) the Nintendo DS creations were upsetting to fans and the Nintendo Wii had made fans feel perplexed, despite the great story, they found it strange for the game to be a platformer.

Overall, they just wanted the original lay out and original turn-based battle system. Some fans had mixed feelings about Paper Mario the Origami King due to the Puzzle – turn based battle system, however many fans still found the playthrough to be entertaining, with loveable characters and a lovely story.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that fans (like myself) yearn for the nostalgia of The Thousand Year Door and Paper Mario N64, which is one of the games that has Nintendo fans wanting to buy the expansion pack to access the upcoming Paper Mario as part of the N64 collection.

Nintendo‘s Switch Online + Expansion Pack trailer is the company’s most disliked video ever, according to its YouTube channel.

The trailer has reached over 124,000 dislikes compared to just 17,000 likes. Its previous record-holder was the E3 2015 trailer for Metroid Prime: Federation Force. That achieved 11,000 likes and 96,000 dislikes.

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack launched on October 26. The cost of one year of membership begins at £34.99. Alternatively, a family pack is available for £59.99, which provides access for eight accounts. If you had enough Nintendo-loving friends, maybe you could split the cost.

The subscription includes access to a library of Nintendo 64 games, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64. It will also grant you access to a Sega Mega Drive library including games like Sonic 2 and Castlevania Bloodlines.

Perhaps most notably, it offers access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons DLC, Happy Home Designer, when it releases on November 5th.

Since launch, there have been huge issues with Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64 running on Switch. These issues are surely a contributor to the negative response to the video, but undoubtedly there is discontent with the service as a whole.

We are about to take a trip down memory road…

Nintendo is set to add Game Boy and Game Boy Colour titles to Nintendo Switch Online, the Switch’s online subcription service, in the next few weeks.

The word that Nintendo will bulk up its Switch Online back catalogue first broke earlier this week via the Nate the Hate podcast, which discussed various possible handheld games Nintendo could bring to the Switch subscription offering. Nintendo Life sources then offered their own confirmation. Further reports have informed us that other retro platforms are also on the cards.

Around 80 NES titles and 50 SNES games are presently available in Nintendo Switch Online’s retro game collection (though totals vary between regions).

Many, if not almost all, of these platform’s most popular games, are now available on the service, and fans are eager for something new.

The Nintendo Switch Online service, which first launched in September 2018 with a selection of NES games, is celebrating its third anniversary this month.

Since September 2019, SNES games have been gradually pouring out.

Before Nintendo announced it officially, a data mine of the NES Switch app in January 2019 hinted at the future availability of SNES titles on the service.
The data mine also revealed a few other emulators hidden in the code, ready for Nintendo to add more platforms down the road.

The retro games from the Gameboy and Gameboy Color are said to be making their way to Nintendo Switch Online

One of the best features of Nintendo Switch Online is having the NES and SNES retro library for old and new fans alike to have access to on the Nintendo Switch, and now, it is rumoured the Gameboy and Gameboy Color games will soon be added to the gaming streaming service, according to sources reportedly confirmed by Nintendo Life.

Next month marks the third anniversary of the online service, so it could become an exciting month for Nintendo fans if the rumours are true.

Retro Games on Nintendo Switch Online

When Nintendo Switch Online originally launched in September 2018, Nintendo added 20 NES games to its subscription. The library of NES games has been growing ever since and now currently stands at 88 games, with some either exclusive to Japan or exclusive to the West.

After the success of adding NES games, Nintendo decided to add SNES games the following year. Currently, there are a lot fewer compared to the NES collection, however, there are still 56 games to choose from. So it is highly possible that there will be another surprise in store for Nintendo fans for the online service’s third anniversary.

Yet the reason why it is believed there will be more retro consoles added is because of a dataminer discovering there are four emulators inside the NES Switch Online app, with two already being used for the NES Mini and SNES Mini (Kachikachi and Canoe) and have since been repurposed for the online libraries. It is believed that a third is will be used for Gameboy and Gameboy Color (either Hiyoko or Count).

Nintendo has also stated prior that it would want to add more classic hardware games to the service but never confirmed what fans could expect them to be.
