Housemarque, the Finnish game studio behind Returnal recently posted a teaser image of what seems to be a partly-cracked statue of someone in otherworldly armor with the caption ‘Atropos…?’. Atropos is a planet in the game world of Returnal, which seemingly learned from the ‘Revengeance’ school of title naming. Returnal has seen multiple updates and patches since it’s April release, but nothing quite as spectacular as teleporting police or server-wide trading post bans. The most recent 2.0 update came out last month, which has added a couple quality of life improvements like the ability to suspend your in-game progress when closing the game and a photo mode. Speaking of photo modes-

A Good-Natured Rant On Photo Modes: Honey. Baby. My darling diamond-encrusted caviar bagel. We NEED to talk about the whole reason cameras exist in the first place! I myself enjoy fiddling with the filters and environment lenses in the photo modes of The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima (psst, which we have), so please explain to me why these “photo” modes don’t have the option for you to take a screenshot of your masterfully-rendered in-game background art built in! Do I look like I know how the share button works!? I don’t even know how to work the online multiplayer for Broforce despite beating it multiple times!

Housemarque has recently been acquired by Sony in June, so needless to say, future projects from Housemarque (be it on Returnal or otherwise) will likely have a fair amount of backing.

Returnals 2.0 Update added a feature to suspend their games. Players can create a suspend point, turn off their Playstation and go away, returning back to the exact point they left off when they return. The catch is that the suspend point is destroyed upon returning, so players will still be able to Absolutely Ruin their run if they aren’t careful in the next room. However, thanks to some Carful Exploiting of how the game works, players have discovered a way to save-scum through the game.

According to Joseph Yaden, Writer for Inverse, the System works by Suspending your save ingame, then uploading that save to the Playstation cloud. Then, when you die, you can Download the save and continue playing from where you left off.

Returnal is a Brutal roguelike, with Runs taking up to an hour to complete, so the Appeal of save scumming is clear… although Decidedly also not something to be encouraged in regards to the game.

It is also worth noting that Returnal won’t let you suspend during Boss fights, first person Sections or “intense Combat Scenarios, so this method won’t work for everything.

Sony celebrates as the PS5 hits 10 million sales globally, overtaking PS4 as its fastest-selling console

The PS5 hit 10 million sales as of July 18 just after 8 months from its launch on November 12, 2020, hitting the target one month quicker than the PS4 back in 2013.

PS5 Sale Figures

Not only has Sony released the number of sales the PS5 has reached globally, but they have also shared the sale figures for several of their first-party titles.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold over 6.5 million copies since it was released for PS5 in November 2020, MLB: The Show 21 has sold over 2 million copies since its release in April, Returnal has sold just over 560,000 copies since its release in the same month and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold over 1 million copies since June.

Jim Ryan also went on to say that they still have a long way to go in terms of the PS5, as demand for the console continues to outweigh the supply.

Sony is also receiving the highest engagement rates it has ever seen with the PS5, compared with the PS4 launch window. Both the number of hours played and the amount of monthly active users have seen a double-digit increase in engagement.

Microsoft also claimed earlier in the week that the Xbox Series X/S are the company’s fastest-selling consoles ever, with sales estimated to have reached 6.5 million at the end of June.
