Sony secures semiconductor supply.

Since their release, gamers worldwide have faced the same struggle of getting their hands on next-gen consoles. This is due largely to a shortage of parts, namely semiconductors, central to the console production process. Well, PS5 consoles might soon be easier to acquire, according to Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki.

During the company’s quarterly earnings call (via Twinfinite), Totoki was asked about the global semiconductor shortage that has made PS5 stock so hard to come by since the console’s release last November. In response, Totoki told investors that Sony has not only set the target for the number of consoles it wants to sell this year but has also secured all the chipsets it needs to manufacture those consoles. It’s not clear exactly how many PS5 consoles Sony plans to ship, but Totoki also confirmed that the target for this fiscal year (which ends in March 2022) is more than 14.8 million units. Just over 10 million consoles have sold since launch, so there could be a significant influx of new consoles over the next year.

Alongside a semiconductor shortage, the global pandemic has impacted manufacturing and supply chains globally. When the consoles actually ship, dedicated scalping groups have caused further disruption, buying up and then reselling more than 60,000 new-gen machines in the weeks after the PS5 and Xbox Series releases.

Earlier this summer, Sony added to players’ confusion, inviting those who already owned their new console to buy another PS5. But, with the components now sourced, here’s hoping would-be PS5 owners have the chance to actually get their hands on the console.

There haven’t been many exciting releases for the new generation console thus far, so for PS5 owners, it has been a slow burn up until now. You will be happy to know that this is due to change shortly, with the wealth of upcoming games being released in the second half of 2021. Many of these games were revealed across the last month or so throughout the various ongoing gaming showcases (e.g. E3’s individual showcases, EA’s Spotlight Series + Play Live, Sony’s State of Play etc.). We have had so many games revealed to us recently that it can be hard to keep track of them all.
According to the on-console patch notes, the 902MB update to version 21.01-03.21.00 makes improvements to the system’s performance.

There may have been some changes that have not been mentioned (e.g. April’s quiet fix for a disc spinning issue).

The last update (21.01-0.3.20.00) fixed a battery indicator bug, resulting in the battery icon constantly blinking, indicating the controller as being on low battery even though it wasn’t.

The official patch notes also listed fixes for a PS5 screen reader issue and hidden games problem, plus improvements when copying games from USB to console.

Sony released PS5’s first major system software update globally on April 14, adding the ability to store PS5 games on external USB drives (but not play titles from them), and cross-gen Share Play, meaning PS5 users can let friends on PS4 remotely play their games, among other features.

Sony also made additions to the PlayStation smartphone app, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog at the time, Sony’s Hideaki Nishino stated: “We’re only scratching the surface of the many updates and improvements we’ve made across PS5, PS4, and PS App, so check them out and let us know what you think.”

Including Nioh 2, God of War, Moving Out and more…

Judgment will join PlayStation Now until October 4th, and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be added until November 1st.

These limited-time blockbuster games were first rolled out in October 2019 as a bid to become more competitive with Sony’s rival streaming services. Sony has stuck with this limited-time concept since then.

God of War was among the first of these limited-time games, alongside Grand Theft Auto V, Infamous Second Son and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Starting today, July 6th, God of War, Nioh 2, and Moving Out will also join PlayStation Now, with these titles remaining as longer-term additions to the service. Finally, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Nascar Heat 5 will also join Now.

PlayStation Now’s software library includes over 700 PS2, PS3 and PS4 games streamable to PS5, PS4 or PC, and over 300 PS4 titles which can be downloaded and played on consoles. PlayStation Now has been hugely popular on PC, allowing PC players to finally get their hands on exclusives such as Bloodborne.

They have also been constantly improving the service, bringing in 1080p support earlier this year.

PlayStation Now subscribers have grown substantially over the last year, growing from 1.8 million to 3.2 million subscribers as of March 2021.
