Naughty dog have release ten minutes of gameplay from their upcoming remake of “The last of us”, now titled “the Last of Us Part 1”, following leaks that the developers have described as “disheartening, frustrating and hurtful.”

The ten Minutes Feature a gameplay deep dive with the devs who go into how they “went in and Rebuilt the Game from the ground up. An accompanying post on the Playstation blog has confirmed the game can Render at Naitive 4K with a targeted 30FPS, or a dynamic 4K at a targeted 60FPS.

The blog states ““The PS5’s powerful hardware drives a host of visual benefits, from denser physics with tons of bumpables and chipables (bullets can now rip apart concrete and environmental objects) and cinematics now transition seamlessly to gameplay,”

“Motion matching technology means that character animations flow more convincingly, intuitively and realistically; all adding another layer of believability to characters and their interactions with the world.

“Further, AI upgrades mean that characters inhabit the world in a more authentic and realistic way, such as buddy characters navigating cover to avoid enemy NPC sightlines more authentically.”

Naughty Dog have also confirmed the addition of permadeath and speedrun modes, as well as new costumes for Joel and ellie

This reveal comes following leaks showing off the games Intro, Combat and accessibility options. Naughty Dogs vice president Arne meyer responded to this by saying “Leaks really suck, Esp when we’re right on the cusp of an asset drop. It’s disheartening and frustrating to teams who have put their hearts making awesome things for our fans.” T

These thoughts where echoed by Samuel prince, senior editor at naughty Dog who said “They’re extremely hurtful to the devs who work tirelessly to bring you these wonderful games. Public-facing assets take a long time to create, revise, approve, localize, clear legal, ESRB, etc. Be kind!”

Now, with all that said…

WARNING: PERSONAL OPINIONS AHEAD

I do not like how this game is shaping up. On one hand the fact the last of us is coming to PC is great, and the first game is by far the less controversial of the two, But the last of us Part 1 looks like its at best going to be a very mediocre experience and, at worst, is going to be bad.

Lets start with the “4K” claims because I am going to be real I dont think people really understand what 4K means when it comes to games. 4K is a resolution. 4K means the game is being output to your screen at a size of 3840 x 2160 Pixels. Resolution, notably, has *nothing* to do with graphics. It *can*, higher resolutions can facilitate nicer looking graphics, but that really does not matter much. If you do not have a 4K display, then a 4K resolution means nothing. Hell, on PC there is a small but notable argument that Lower resolution CRT monitors are better than higher Resolution LCD monitors because of their faster refresh rate which makes games play better.

I'm seeing loads of people voicing their anger/concern for the remake's gameplay, and that's 100% okay. I'm not here to argue with anyone.

But I think one of the undebatable things about this remake is all the accessibility options. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/6HHKjvA8ee

— Naughty Dog Info (@NaughtyDogInfo) July 21, 2022

Another thing that has me a little unsure of this release is the accessibility options. Naughty dog have bragged about there being “over 60” Accessibility features in the game. This is, in itself, not bad. More accessibility options are always a good thing. But I would argue that with the recent leaks… these are not accessibility options. A lot of these are dedicated to Lowering difficulty or easing combat or removing puzzles, and personally these are the kinds of “accessibility options” that I really hate. Good accessibility options are Button Rebinding, Colour blind modes, Text to speech, audio descriptive, etc, which are all here, but Fundamentally these should all just be cosmetic so people can enjoy the game. When an “accessibility option” changes the difficulty of a game, then it hurts the integrity of the overall experience. This was an issue in TLOU Part 2 where you could trivialise the entire game using these.

To be clear, again, accessibility features are good inherently. But I know of people who don’t have use of their hands, complete dark souls or Sekiro with their feet. accessibility is making it so that anyone *can* complete a game, not making it so that anyone will.

All in all, graphically the game looks meh, the Boasting of 4K is borderline meaningless, the game looks like its once again going to have any challenge nuked from orbit in the name of accessibility, and all in all this feels like a rushed cash in. they could very easily have just ported the PS4 release of TLOU to PS5 and PC. its still a fine looking game. But instead they decided to do a full “remake” and charge $70 for it.

Apple them self have refused to comment on why said games are leaving, however MacRumors have been able to speak to an insider for comment, which has shed some light on what is going on behind the scenes.

When apple arcade first launched, Apple signed a number of three-year deals with developers, entering into contracts that provided a fixed payment and ongoing royalties. These contracts are now coming to an end, and Apple is either opting not to renew them or the developers themselves have chosen not to renew. Many of the titles leaving where either launch titles for the service or where added shortly after launch.

Developers Retain the rights to their games and can re-release them on the app store, or through other platforms, but the games that are removed from the apple arcade service wone be accessible through apple arcade.

Games can be re-added to the app store on the same day they are removed from apple arcade, but games will be uploaded with a new Bundle ID. this means that Apple Arcade Subscribers will be able to redownload the games, but they will not be able to access the same game that was available through arcade

As of right now it is not clear is saved progress will be able to transfer over from the apple arcade version of the game to the new version, should the devs choose to reintroduce their games to the app store, as that will depend on whether developers implement support for data transfer.

Games leavering include Spelldrifer, Projection: Fist Light, EarthNight, Cardpocalypse, Dead End Job, and more.

If you want to get a game that wont randomly disappear from a service, grab them from Go2games.com

Ubisoft has officially ended development support for ghost recon breakpoint. The game launched back in october 2019 and was widely panned by critics and fans alike, which lead to a series of updates intended to improve the game.

The news came in the form of a tweet from the official ghost recon twitter account on tuesday, where ubisoft said the game will not receive any further Content updates.

Hey Ghosts, we have an important message we would like to share with you all 👇 pic.twitter.com/kYeyVWVtgi

— Ghost Recon (@GhostRecon) April 5, 2022

The Message reads “The last four months marked the release of our final piece of content: the brand new Operation Motherland mode, tons of new items including 20th anniversary iconic outfits and Quartz items for Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

“We will continue to maintain our servers for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint and we truly hope you will continue to enjoy the game and have fun playing in solo or co-op with your friends.

“From the entire Ghost Recon team, we want to thank you again for your continued support and love you have for the franchise. The feedback you’ve given for Ghost Recon Breakpoint has been instrumental and will help shape the future of the franchise.”

Outside of its already troubled launch, Ghost recon made significant missteps over its lifetime, including the Aforementioned Quartz items for the game. Ingame items tied NTFs (Non Fungible tokens), which were divisive to say the least upon launch and were very widely panned by players and critics alike.

In 2019 Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that Breakpoints poor critical reception was responsible for the delays we saw to watch dogs legion, gods and monsters (later renamed immortals fenyx rising) and rainbow Six Extraction.

Monkey island is kind of a legendary series. PC point and click adventure games from Lucas Arts that, while maybe not the best games the company ever made in the genre (I think that title either goes to Sam and Max hit the road or Grim Fandango) are endlessly funny and replayable games.

The series follows the misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood, in his journey to become a notorious pirate and also to defeat the plans of evil pirate LeChuck. For context, these games started in 1990, so no, it was not ripping of Pirates of the Caribbean, if anything Pirates of the Caribbean ripped off Monkey Island.

Lucas film games (not LucasArts, they were shut down a few years back when disney acquired lucasfilm, RIP) have recently confirmed a new monkey island game, Named “return to monkey island” will be coming soon, and will be lead by the original writer and director of the series Ron Guilbert.

Alongside Guilbert, the trailer also confirms some other names returning to the series, such as composers Micheal Land, Peter McConnel and Clint Bajakian, as well as Dominic Armanto as the voice of Guybrush. Rex Crowle of Little big Planet and Tearaway fame is onboard as the art Lead.

The game is scheduled for a release late this year.

Guilbert had actually announced on april 1st that he was working on a new game, although many dismissed this as a joke. However, today he posted to his Blog “I felt bad about the April Fools’ joke so over the weekend I whipped up the game so no one was disappointed.” and along with it showed a trailer that had just dropped on devolver digitals youtube channel.

Guilbert has not worked on a monkey island game since the second installment, however Lucasarts did make 3 more games in that time, such as cures of Monkey Island in 1997, Escape from Monkey Island in 2000, and tales from Monkey island in 2009, which was also developed by telltale games.

Guilbert himself has recently done some work with double fine, studio of former Lucasarts employee Tim Schafer, working on “the cave” in 2013, as well as making tumbleweed park in 2017 with his new studio terrible toybox.

What the hell is a Gex?

Gex. We all remember Gex right? No. no you dont. No-one remembers gex. It was a series of 3D platformers on the 3DO, PSX and the Sega Saturn, and given no-one remembers Gex, I highly doubt anyone remembers the Sega Saturn or, more so, the 3DO.

Gex was about a lizard called Gex, who was obsessed with TV and one day gets sucked into TV land… I think. Look I have never actually played Gex, I have 2 and 3 Ripped and ready to emulate in Duckstation, and the original is available on PC through GOG but I just haven’t gotten around to them yet. They are notoriously dated, relying on pop culture references for their humor and so haven’t aged as cleanly as other 3d platformers of the Era.

Gex Jr, AKA the Son of Gex

In any case, the reason we bring up Gex today is that people have discovered a demo for a previously unannounced and unknown Gex game, Gex Jr. The demo is available on archive.org and can be run in any PSX emulator (although how well it will run is questionable, this is an unreleased demo that we where never meant to have). A playthrough has also been posted to youtube by Justz00t.

According to the user who originally posted the demo, it was found on a CD-R dated to around January 2001. This probably never came out because… 2001 the PS2 was kicking off an interest in the PSX was dying off. Plus, the Gex franchise was never too successful anyway.

And it sure is more Gex. More dated pop culture references, including “I am your father, Luke”, and many more across the short 31 seconds of gameplay.

As of last year, the rights to the Gex series in European territories where re-acquired by Square-Enix, although what will come of this, if anything, is yet to be seen. And being real, do we really want more Gex? The games are pretty good but even if there is a new game that uses more up-to-date pop culture references… in 10 years time those will just be as dated as the ones in the original.

Sony has confirmed that the critically acclaimed game Persona 5 will be leaving the PS+ collection on may 11th, 2022, in a new blogpost that also confirmed Aprils PlayStation plus games. If you have the title in your library when it is removed, it will still be playable as long as you maintain a PS+ subscription.

Persona 5 tells the story of Joker, a troubled youth who ends up being relocated to Tokyo while on probation after a false assault charge. He quickly finds himself drawn into a wider world, where him and his new-found friends “the phantom thieves are tasked with entering the minds of people around them and Stealing their “treasure” in an attempt to reform them in some way. in the background of this, people all over the city are falling under the effects of something referred to as “mental shutdowns”, and it is ultimately down to Joker and the phantom thieves to track down the cause of this strange plague.

The PS Plus collections features a series of PS4 titles, including a large number of Sony’s First Party games, along with some third party titles like Fallout 4, Final fantasy XV and Monster hunter world.

PS Plus Collection Launched with the PS5 in November 2020, but not much has changed since then.

Aprils PS Plus games have also been announced, those being “Hood: Outlaws & Legends”, “Slay the Spire” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated”

Sony have also revealed changes to the overall PS+ Subscription, which will combine in aspects of PlayStation Now and now will be a tiered subscription model. This received version will launch in June and will be available for PS4 and PS5.

Nintendo has officially delayed the release date of the still untitled sequel to The Legend of Zelda breath of the wild until spring 2023. Previously, the game had been scheduled to arrive in 2022.

Eiji Anouma was the one who broke the news in a video update release on tuesday.

Breath of the wild 2 has now been in development longer than the first game, having been announced shortly after the launch of breath of the wild, and then getting its first trailer in June 2021. The original plan was to release the game in 2022, however with this news the game is now planned to launch in early 2023.

On the subject of the games title, according to a Nintendo spokes person, it has yet to be revealed as it contains spoilers for the games plot.

A note on Hype

Look. At this point BOTW 2 has been in development for longer than the first game. All this despite the game reusing the assets and engine from the first game. HOWEVER I feel I need to stress that we should all manage our hype levels for this. When anticipated games get delayed, its very easy to think that this means more features or a better game, when it may just mean that one stupid problem has forced development back further. Especially given the impact of Covid over the last few years, let’s please try to not get overhyped for this game. We dont need another no man’s sky situation.

The switch is a wonderful machine. Unlike both of the other major Console manufacturers, Nintendo has been able to offer a truly unique experience this generation with its handheld/Console hybrid system. It has already hosted some of this generation’s best experiences with titles like Breath of the Wild and Mario odyssey, and is the one Home console that I can actually see myself buying this gen as someone who primarily games on PC.

However, it’s not without its issues. Outside of the infamous joycon drift and nintendo’s subpar online service, the switch just isn’t that powerful. It is, ultimately, a handheld system and while it’s a damn powerful handheld, it is, again, a handheld and as such is subject to the same restrictions the formfactor has always featured, including lower power than dedicated home consoles.

This has made porting modern games, such as Activision’s Hugely successful Call of Duty Series… tough to say the least. Games like Doom Eternal were delayed and came out on switch months after their PC and Console release dates, and many other companies have simply decided not to put their games on switch and to instead port titles from the PS3 and Xbox 360 to the system.

In this vain, claims from a COD insider on twitter have recently suggested that an older Call of Duty title will soon be dropping on switch. This follows reports last month that activision will delay Call of Duty 2023, likely motivated by the technical issues with last years Call of Duty: Vanguard. In an attempt to still maintain a yearly release schedule, it is rumored activision may be looking to remaster some of the series older titles and release them on new Consoles.

Addressing the confusion, MWR is supposedly coming to Nintendo Switch, it’s first introductory into the Call of Duty franchise for the console.

— Ralph (@RalphsValve) March 24, 2022

Twitter user RalphsValve is behind this news, mentioning that Activision is looking at re-releasing Call of Duty 1 and 2, World at war, as well as a backwards compatible integration for COD 4: Modern Warfare remastered on the ninth gen consoles, with Modern Warfare Remastered also getting a port to the nintendo switch

RalphsValve has previously leaked many details surrounding 2023’s “Modern Warfare 2” which have been verified by credible Source Tom Henderson. If modern warfare does make its way to switch, it would be the first COD title on a Nintendo platform since 2013s “call of Duty Ghosts” released on the ill Fated Wii U.

After Microsoft acquired Activision earlier this year, Brad Smith (President of Microsoft) stated the company is interested in bringing Call of Duty to the Switch along with other titles owned by Activision.

On the subject, Charla Wrote “Since the program’s inception, independent developers have earned more than $2.5 billion in royalties, and total revenue generated by ID@Xbox partners on Xbox almost doubled over the last three years”

The blog also states that the program has seen over 1000 developers sign up, however Charla does concede that Xboxs work with indie developers still has a easy to go, explaining “One area we talk to developers and players about a lot is discoverability. Teams across Microsoft work every day to help solve discovery challenges so players can find games they love, and in turn, ensure developers find the audience for their games.”

At GDC last week, Microsoft also announced ID@Azure, which is aimed at indie developers across any platform that want to use Microsoft’s cloud gaming technology in their titles.

At the same event Xbox also officially announced their newest cloud gaming organisation. According to them, the division “works with studios to develop cloud-native titles and bring them exclusively to the Xbox ecosystem” and is being headed by Kim Swift.

Swift is probably best known for their work at valve as the project lead and designer of Portal, as well as working as a designer and artist on the Left 4 Dead Games, and was recently the director of game design at Stadia.

The news comes from Axios, who say that, in response to an open letter, the company has said it will not object to the union efforts, which started during the wake of recent scandals surrounding activision blizzard.

In the letter, Workers asked Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella whether microsoft has authorized Activision to rule on the recognition of the union. Workers have also accused Activision for using “union-busting” tactics in an attempt to thwart their action, and have called on microsoft to stop the “campaign that is being waged against us”

Responding to the letter, a spokesperson from microsoft told Axios “Microsoft will not stand in the way if Activision Blizzard recognizes a union.” continuing on, they said “Microsoft respects Activision Blizzard employees’ right to choose whether to be represented by a labour organization and we will honor those decisions.”

A version of the letter is also slated to run in Microsoft's backyard this weekend in the Sunday edition of the Seattle Times pic.twitter.com/e1sHUSKFLY

Back in February, Activision’s vice president of QA, Christian Arends, Sent a message to staff in an attempt to dissuade them from unionizing.

In January, the 34 strong group called the game workers alliance officially asked activision blizzard to recognise the union, which would be the first one ever at a major north american Development studio.
