During the MIX Next showcase for indie games that are coming soon, Wartales had the release of its early access version announced for December 1st.

To clarify, that’s Wartales as in War Tales, not Wart Ales. Like, not to turn this into a roast, but y’all really couldn’t have just capitalized the T? You know you messed up in your naming when it results in a leftist advocating for capitalism!

Shiro Games are the developing company behind Wartales, a medieval open-world RPG seeing you act as manager to a rag-tag group of mercenaries you’ve picked out. The combat system relies on turn-based tile-moving tactics, similar to the ‘Fire Emblem’ games or ‘South Park: The Fractured But Whole‘, which if my days watching letsplays by DashieGames and Jacksepticeye are anything to go by, is actually pretty fun. Story: Set in the medieval fantasy world of Edoran, which is ironic because that name literally combines my favourite ancient Japanese historical era with my favourite Akira Kurosawa film! That’d be like calling a vegan fast food brand Steakham!

The Wartales universe is plagued by a totally non-topical and definitely coincidental plague, so in an attempt to make the best from a bad situation, you squad up with the lads to form your own ‘war brand’ and find a king or lord who’ll pay you to give opposing forces a case of the shanked jankers.

Gameplay Depth: Outside combat, other important actions at the end of each in-game ‘working week’ include distributing wages and managing morale. You’ll also be responsible for feeding your crew. This combination of mechanics sounds interesting in-part because it reminds me a lot of an interesting video on ludo-narrative dissonance in Darkest Dungeon, which has similar mechanics. Said video was made by one Harry Michael Brewis (AKA Hbomberguy, AKA H-bomb, AKA Fellow Mind-Brain Explordinaire), who has a knack for fitting videos about video games, film and political discourse all under one roof.

Nicolas also claimed the early access version of Wartales will be available for around a year or year and a half, during which time, the game will see various updates.

Upon initially becoming available for pre-order, a cross-gen bundle was only available for the premium versions of Battlefield 2042, currently in development by Dice.

However, EA said “We realise that for many, next gen is still hard to come by” on Tuesday.

They went on to say:

“We want as many Battlefield fans as possible to start the journey with us on day one, and we want to give those players the peace of mind that their progress carries over if they get a new system this holiday season, or beyond.”

This announcement means that players who are planning to purchase next-gen consoles in the future will have the option to pay a fee to upgrade their version of the game and carry over their progress to the new console. Players can pay £10 to upgrade digital versions of the game within their chosen family of consoles. This will provide access to the game on both systems.

Battlefield 2042 is the latest entry into the Battlefield franchise, and the multiplayer only title will support 128-player matches on next-gen consoles and PC. Xbox One and PS4 players however will be restricted to 64 –player matches, and the map sizes will be reduced to make up for the difference in processing power.

At this time the feature has only been announced to be available for digital copies of Battlefield 2042, so it appears that physical copies of the game may not have access to the upgrade.

The Battlefield 2042 Beta is available in early access now. The open beta goes live on the 8^th of October and runs until the 10^th of October. Here is how to get beta access! The game is expected to release on November 19th 2021.

LEGO Worlds

LEGO’s answer to Minecraft, out NOW on Early Access!

LEGO Worlds has been described on Steam as allowing players to “explore environments filled with adventure … discover secrets and treasures … create your own models.” The game never received any build-up, nor a pre-release announcement, but it has now, thanks to developer TT Games.

Here is what publisher Warner Bros. had to say on the game – “LEGO Worlds will be a fully open-world, creativity-driven game so we want to ensure that we provide it with the utmost care and attention as we expand on our ideas,”. “So much of this game will be about building and sharing and by sharing our plans with the community, we hope to incorporate their feedback and build an experience together that fans of Lego and this genre of video games can enjoy.”

This digital board-game will be arriving on the PS4 this September 2015, and has a Game of Thrones air about it!

The director and founder of League of Geeks, Trent Kusters, announced yesterday on the PlayStation Blog that this brand new and exciting digital board-game will coming to the PS4 in September 2015. Here is what he had to say about it..

“After our successful Kickstarter campaign and a solid stint on Early Access, Armello’s community has helped us hone the game into the unique, polished and deeply thoughtful experience it is today,” Trent Kusters has said. “However, we’ve also been secretly working away on a PlayStation version of Armello that uses every inch of the console, with brand new high end assets, redesigned UI and controls specifically designed to ensure feels right at home on PS4.”

The game “thrusts players into a Game of Thrones-esque struggle for power” in a board-game like style. The are eight animal heroes which the player can chose from, to battle enemies and, finally, fight to gain the throne!

Armello is expected to launch in full on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux this September.

Darkest Dungeon

A brand new and wonderfully gothic role-playing game

Now with THIS.. I am most definitely intrigued! Darkest Dungeon comes to you from Red Hook Studios and will be available to play on the PS4, PS Vita, Mac OS X, Linux and Microsoft Windows from 3rd February 2015, on Steam Early Access.

Darkest Dungeon is a challenging gothic rogue-like turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring. Recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes against unimaginable horrors, stress, famine, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. You will also be uncovering strange mysteries, and pit the heroes against an array of fearsome monsters with an innovative strategic turn-based combat system.

“We plan to be in Early Access for approximately six months, which we will use to add more dungeons, more character classes, and many new features to continue adding to the game. Our intent is to release the full version of the game in the 2nd half of 2015.”, the developers have said previously. “For the full release, we are planning to add more dungeon environments (one of which is the Darkest Dungeon), more character classes, story mode integration, additional monsters, items, quirks, narration, and dialogue. We also have reserved some time to add other new features and make changes based upon player feedback!”

The game is already sounding and looking fantastic! Here are a few more nuggets which you can expect from Darkest Dungeon:

• The Affliction System – battle not only monsters, but stress! Contend with paranoia, masochism, fear, irrationality, and a host of gameplay-meaningful quirks!
• Striking hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style
• Innovative turn-based combat pits you against a host of diabolical monsters
• Ten (and counting!) playable hero classes, including Plague Doctor, Hellion, and even the Leper!
• Camp to heal wounds or deliver inspiring speeches.
• Rest your weary, shell-shocked characters in town at the Tavern or the Abbey to keep their stress in check.
• Classic CRPG and roguelike features, including meaningful permadeath, procedural dungeons, and incredible replay.

Celebrate Christmas in Verdun

A multiplayer World War I shooter which is currently in Early Access on Steam

 “100 years ago French, German and British troops while fighting in World War I held truces during Christmas 1914. They exchanged Christmas greetings, sang Christmas carols and rumours say that they played a few football matches. “

“There will be a Truce event where you can find soldiers dressed for the winter, join football matches and throw snowballs at each other.” A statement from the developers Blackmill and M2H on enforcing peaceful events rooted in very real history.

 In the coming days there will be a lot of related events, such as a competition on who can create the best “Best Wishes” card derived from war itself! There will also be streams and video competitions.

 When playing a first person shooter, you immediately become this lean, mean killing machine whose only goal is to eliminate everyone in sight. They also have a tendency to make one quite angry in terms of someone outshooting you or constantly annihilating you. Verdan is different and has a very clever underlying idea. It allows the player to perceive their foe in a different light and think, “we may be at war and doing what must be done, but singing carols, laughing and joking is seeing us through the hardship”.
