In a surprise announcement, ConcernedApe – the sole developer of hit indie game Stardew Valley – has revealed that a new game called Haunted Chocolatier is in development.

Clearly, it shares a lot of stylistic and thematic similarities with Stardew Valley. Not that I’m complaining! The more cozy games, the better! Haunted Chocolatier seems to share Stardew’s warm pixel art style and simple UI, all strengths of the game. I do notice some improvements in the character art, though. They look more detailed and lifelike.

(Also – super cute. I’m guessing they will also be dateable like in Stardew? I’m hoping they are. I need to know how Maddie likes her eggs in the morning.)

Gameplay seems to be the only part that ConcernedApe makes any significant changes to. Players won’t be farming crops or tending to animals, but rather will keep their small chocolate business afloat. To do that, players will travel through a portal in their house to a forest, where they can collect resources used to make chocolate, all the while fighting off enemies.

The trailer for Haunted Chocolatier only announced that the game is in development. A release date, along with platforms for the game, has not been announced. As with Stardew, ConcernedApe will be logging development progress through a website/blog.

The video explains how the expansion will impact health and stamina choices in combat…

Valheim’s first major expansion, Hearth & Home, is finally around the corner, after spending the first few months of the game in Early Access fixing bugs rather than adding new content. The update is set to add a host of new features and rework existing ones, including health and stamina.

As detailed earlier this month, Hearth & Home is set to completely change how food works in the game. As currently constructed, eating food will restore your health and stamina, no matter what food you consume. Well, after the update’s arrival, you will have to eat specific foods to increase health or stamina separately. Different types of food will affect certain attributes. There will also be some foods that bring a mix of health and stamina instead of boosting only one. The developers have also tweaked how long popular foods last and how long their peak efficacy lasts. For further details on the specific changes to food types and mechanics, see the prior article (linked above).

Of course, stamina is useful for survival tasks such as building etc. or fighting large numbers of opponents, whereas health is obviously needed to not die. The new update, therefore, is likely to open up different choices within combat. Players can now prioritise certain stats in line with the enemy and their play style.

According to the video posted by the Valheim devs (see below), the stamina-focused combat style is currently the norm for most players, with high stamina allowing players to make more attacks on enemies. A health-focused combat style would instead concentrate on defensive play, including the use of shields. Not only will blocking power now be based on maximum health, but it also will factor into a new stagger mechanic. Based on your health, the stagger bar will fill up as you’re attacked, and if it reaches the top, your character will be staggered.

The Prince of the Underworld is expanding his escape mission to new consoles.

If you were busy during the pandemic (some people might have been) then you wouldn’t have known about the indie game that took everyone by storm.

Hades, a roguelike action dungeon crawler video game developed and published by Supergiant Games, was originally published only on PC and Switch on September 17, 2020, after an early access version was released in September 2018. It received multiple awards including Best Indie, Best Action, Best Audio, Best Writing, and Best Game across different gaming publications and is now going to be available for a lot more gamers.

Hades on Xbox and PlayStation

Hades is now available on PC, Nintendo, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5 as of today, as well as free to play if you are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass on Xbox and PC.

Supergiant Games says Hades will be available on PS4 and Xbox One at a frame rate of 60fps at 1080p, while on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 the game will run at 60fps in 4K.

Physical editions of Hades will come with an exclusive download code for the iconic soundtrack and a 32-page character compendium booklet.

The Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions are on the same disk, however, both physical and digital PS4 versions offer a free upgrade to the PS5 if the player ever requires it.

There is one downside to owning Hades on Xbox or PlayStation. Unlike the Nintendo Switch, players won’t be able to transfer their saved games between PC and Xbox or even PC and PlayStation.

So what are you waiting for? The best game of 2020 is available now on more platforms than ever and it will continue to get bigger as more people take on the odyssey that is escaping the Underworld.

Plenty of new indie titles were announced and shown at Annapurna Interactive’s showcase and this is just one of many…

Created by Heart Machine, the minds behind the award-winning Hyper Light Drifter that pays homage to 8-bit and 16-bit games, showed gameplay footage for their second game, Solar Ash, and shared more details too at the Annapurna Interactive showcase yesterday.

What is Solar Ash?

Solar Ash is an action-adventure game that was debuted during PS5‘s reveal event at E3 earlier this year. Not a lot of information had been released, apart from the fact Heart Machine was ditching the 2D 8-bit graphics and embracing the beautiful graphics of the PS5. Now, more details have been released with its new gameplay footage.

The game has players journeying through a “surreal, vivid and highly stylized” world filled with “mystery, wild high-speed traversal, endearing characters, and massive enemy encounters,”- some of which we see in the trailer.

We see the game’s main protagonist, Ash, waking up in the palm of a titanic, then the trailer cuts to scenes of Ash moving across the beautiful scenery of the game that provides different types of ruins and fantastical qualities throughout. Some enemies also crop up that can only be described as massive and fantastical-looking insects and surprisingly adds even more beauty to the game.

The trailer goes onto show Solar Ash is being released on PC, PS4, and PS5 on October 26 2021, and will also be available to purchase from Epic Games Store.

Inked: A Tale Of Love, developed by Somnium Games and published by Pixmain, has been announced it will arrive on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo sometime this year.

This ballpoint pen-drawn puzzle adventure was originally released on PC in 2018 and has only been released on iOS and Android very recently, under the name Inked, which had “a new enriched storyline with a more immersive and smoother player experience”. 

The developer Somnium Games is an indie development studio based in Croatia that was founded in 2014, and the publisher Pixmain is a new publisher founded last year.

In this story-driven puzzle game, a tale of love and redemption is uniquely told through pen and paper. Players will play as The Nameless Hero, who sets out on a journey in a beautiful landscape filled with puzzles to solve. Each puzzle takes them one step closer to their lost love, Aiko, and unravels an enchanting story that intertwines The Artist and The Nameless Hero in an adventure that will forever change them both.

The gameplay allows you to explore 10 different hand-drawn paper worlds, use your magical paintbrush to draw geometric shapes to clear obstacles and solve puzzles and unveil a heartwarming story to comfort your soul.

Since its initial release, Inked: A Tale Of Love has received multiple awards. At GameConnection Asia 2020, it won the Grand Award, Best Upcoming Game, Best Casual Game and Best Mobile/Tablet Game for its mobile version.
