Metacritic users voice their opinions on Diablo Immortal, ranking the title a dismal 0.5 out of 10.

Diablo Immortal is a mobile device centered free to play title, following the series’ RPG staples. It is also an online only MMO, reliant on microtransactions to progress at a decent pace, which is where a lot of backlash is aimed at.

As of the 8th June, the title on Metacritic sits at an incredibly low 0.5/10, with over 2,500 negative ratings, less than a week after release. Similarly, World of Warcraft Classic: Burning Crusade, releasing on the 1st June, sits at this score too with 350 negative ratings. The microtransactions are so prominent, that in an analysis by the YouTube channel Bellular News, the total cost to fully upgrade a character is £88,000.

Diablo Immortal joins the wide range of Blizzard games to have been released in the last 5 years, that have failed to reach an average score amongst fans, including Diablo II: Resurrected, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands and many updates to Hearthstone.

Factors outside of the game’s quality and structure may have affected their scores, such as the recent Activision Blizzard controversies and the game’s director Wyatt Cheng being seen in a disingenuous light, as he stated months prior to release: “In Diablo Immortal, there is no way to acquire or rank up gear using money” only for microtransactions regarding Legendary Gems, a pilar alongside XP level and regular gear for progression to arise. Although the gear itself can’t be purchased, the misinformation surrounding the system is enough for players to lose trust and faith in Activision Blizzard.

I don't like it if information is misleading. There's a difference between players liking or not liking a game based on it's merits (which I can accept, not every game is for everybody) vs. liking or not liking a game based on misinformation surrounding it.

As for critics regarding Blizzard games, the worst rated is Warcraft III: Reforged at 59, but it is one of only five games considered “Mediocre” or around the average rating, greatly contrasting player scores. Opposing the user score is the generally favorable 75/100 from 11 critics and Google Play has Diablo Immortal at 3.3/5, as a result of 431,000 reviews and a mix of casual and more seasoned players of the series.

One week on from being added to PlayStation and Xbox, The Prince of the Underworld has come out with a bang…

Hades has only been out for PlayStation and Xbox consoles for one week, yet it has already managed to become the highest-rated game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to be released via the popular rating site Metacritic.

Yes, the indie dungeon crawler game from Supergiant Games that was voted Best Game of the Year by several gaming publications, continues to make impressive strides and has tempted us all with its pomegranate seeds to join the craze that is escaping the Underworld.

Hades Highest-Rated on Metacritic

The ratings for Hades on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S was first noticed by TwistedVoxel.

As it stands, the PS5 version has a Metacritic score of 93, putting it above the likes of Demon’s Souls, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, all with a score between 89-92.

Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X/S version has a Metacritic score of 94, 4 points higher than the likes of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and 5 higher than It Takes Two and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2. 

In comparison, the Switch version also has a Metacritic score of 93, yet is tied in fourth place with Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition, Ori and the Will of the Wasps, Undertale, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. 

2021 continues to be just as impressive a year for the indie title as 2020 was.

Since the beginning of time, or rather since 1972 when Magnavox Odyssey, the first gaming console, was released, Gamers have often debated what the best gaming console of all time is (clearly it’s the Sony PSP that was truly ahead of its time and was probably built by a time-travelling inventor from the future, but nevertheless).

Now, the pop culture site, FandomSpot, has constructed an analysis and has given us an answer…

The analysis is based on collected reviews of 19 of the industry’s biggest gaming franchises that can be found on Metacritic, including Call of Duty, FIFA, and Grand Theft Auto. They tracked the Metacritic score of each release from each franchise.

15 out of 19 games were from the PS3/Xbox 360 generation, making those consoles, the Golden Era of gaming consoles. These games consisted of Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, FIFA 10, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. While they weren’t listed, it is assumed that reinvented games Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 2 and Halo: Combat Evolved were also included.

PS2/Xbox generation came second (my personal faves) with 13 out of 19 games being on from that generation, showcasing that many of the best games from these franchises were playable on both generations of consoles.

It’s fair to say then that PS2/Xbox walked so PS3/Xbox 360 could run.

However, you should take this analysis with a pinch of salt as the methodology behind it is very flawed. Major gaming franchises, such as sport and racing games, are hardly ever representative in the crème de la crème of games. Using only the Metacritic website is also not well-represented on the international scale some games have; not everyone uses English-based websites to review games. There are also franchises that only go back so far and get reinvented as time goes on.

Nevertheless, the analysis is still fun to look at and does still give us an insight into the most popular games at the time. The nostalgia alone when thinking about these consoles will certainly get you misty-eyed as you look back and remember how simple life used to be.

Castlevania keeps staying in the news recently. After the latest announcement of the Netflix adaptation getting a spin-off series to follow on the success of the original show, it has now been hinted that a newly revised collection of the original Game Boy Advance games could be released in the near future.

The Castlevania Advance Collection has yet to be announced by its makers Konami, however, the unannounced collection was rated by the Australian Classification Board on June 18, receiving the ‘M’ rating for its fantasy violence.

The Castlevania Advance Collection is composed of three games that been critically acclaimed all around, with each game scoring 91 on Metacritic. Like most games in the Castlevania franchise, they are action-adventure gothic horror video games revolving around vampire hunters set to take down Count Dracula and his minions.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was released in 2001, set in 1830, and follows the protagonist Nathan Graves, who’s following the footsteps of his deceased parents and his mentor Morris Baldwin take on Dracula. Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance followed next in 2002. It is set in 1748 and follows Simon Belmont’s descendant Juste Belmont, who is trying to save his kidnapped friend Lydie from Dracula’s castle. The final game, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, took on a less conventional setting. Released in 2003, this Castlevania game is set in 2035 and follows teenager Soma Cruz who has occult powers.

These Game Boy Advance games have only been re-released singularly before on the Wii U console back in 2015, making this Castlevania Advance Collection a rare treat indeed.

Konami has previously released other Castlevania collections; the Castlevania Anniversary Collection was released in 2019 and featured eight older Castlevania games that were originally released on consoles such as NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Mega Drive. It has also released other themed compilations of its retro classics, such as Contra Anniversary Collection and Anniversary Collection: Arcade Classics, all of which can be found on Xbox One, PS4, Switch and PC.

Castlevania Advance Collection would be the fourth instalment of this series.
