The studio behind the latest Metroid game is already working on another project

MercurySteam, the Spanish-based development studio that is behind iconic games such as Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Spacelords, and most recently Metroid Dread, has announced it is working on a new project.

The new project is a third-person action RPG, set in a dark fantasy world, codenamed “Project Iron”.

“Project Iron” is a multiplatform game whose IP is co-owned by MercurySteam and Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games, which is the company co-publishing the game. 505 Games is an Italian-based publisher which has previously published games such as Control, Death Stranding, and PayDay 2.

Not much else can be said on the game for now, apart from the fact the project has an initial development budget of €27 million (£23 million).

MercurySteam’s most recent release, Metroid Dread, has been performing incredibly well across multiple places in the world. In the UK, Metroid Dread received the strongest launch for any Metroid game ever, and in just 3 days, the action-adventure sequel managed to outsell nearly every other Metroid game in Japan.

We can only hope that whatever Project Iron has in store for us, will have the same success that Metroid Dread has received. It does appear we are in safe hands no matter what.

The third major update for the title brings one specific change.

The latest update for Metroid Dread is now live. Nintendo and MercurySteam now offer version 1.0.3 as of today.

There are no functionality changes; there is simply one significant tweak accompanying the update. It is as follows:

Fixed an issue where Samus’ damage detection would disappear under certain conditions.

• We decided to fix this issue because there is a possibility that it may occur unintentionally. If it does, it will result in a play experience far different from how Metroid Dread was initially intended to be experienced.

Metroid Dread version 1.0.3 is the third update released for the game thus far.

Metroid Dread was initially launched for Switch on October 8th. Version 1.0.1 dropped on October 20, which addressed a couple of problems, including a bug that could impede progress under certain circumstances. We then saw version 1.0.2 on November 3, which addressed several other issues. You can purchase the title if interested from our Go2Games website (linked below).

In other news, October and the beginning of November have seen some big next-gen titles being released, including the likes of Call of Duty: Vanguard, FIFA 22, Far Cry 6, and Left 4 Dead’s spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood. The new instalment of the Metroid franchise is doing so well, it’s already outsold its predecessors.

Earlier this week I wrote about how Metroid Dread made history by having the biggest launch ever here in the UK. It has now had an even better week in Japan and has already outsold the majority of the franchise in its first week.

This data comes from data recording sites such as Famitsu and Games Data Library that keep a record of sales in Japan.

Metroid in Japan

The video game developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD was released on October 8 on Nintendo Switch and has ranked up 86,798 physical sales, becoming the best-selling game of the week in just 3 days.

Historically, the Metroid franchise has struggled to sell well in Japan, with the most lifetime sales being 155,528 for Metroid: Fusion on record since 1995. Yet with the build-up and release of Metroid Dread, Japan used TV advertisements to help promote the game during prime-time TV shows, keeping the hype for the new release to stay alive.

And now, in less than a week, Metroid Dread has managed to outsell nearly every Metroid title before it, excluding Metroid Fusion. It has also caused a surge in sales for other titles in the franchise.

The data collected by Famitsu excludes digital sales, and as stated in the previous article for Metroid Dread’s UK sales, Nintendo doesn’t reveal its digital numbers, but from looking at the eShop, it is clear to see Metroid Dread is an international success.

Metroid Dread was released at the end of last week and has already beaten records for any previous Metroid game.

Samus Aran is finally getting the recognition she rightfully deserves.

The action-adventure game developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD was released on October 8 on Nintendo Switch, and according to GameIndustry.biz‘s journalist, Christopher Dring, even excluding the digital download numbers, it is the biggest launch for the franchise in UK chart history.

Metroid Dread concludes the main story arc that began with the original game, first released in 1986, and players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the planet ZDR.

Metroid’s Previous Sales

Because of this success, Metroid Dread is now the 5th biggest Switch launch of this year, just after Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Monster Hunter Rise and Pokemon Snap. It is no. 3 currently in the UK charts, just after last week’s other two big releases, FIFA 22, and Far Cry 6, which are both on multiple platforms.

The biggest sale launch previously in the Metroid franchise was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on the Wii, which ultimately ended up slowing down in sales after its initial release. Metroid Dread has also sold 3 times more than its predecessor, Metroid: Samus Return in 2017, the remake of the original from 1991.

Nintendo does not reveal its digital sales numbers, however, the game has topped the eShop charts in multiple regions which gives a slight hint to how the game is performing.

Metroid Dread will need to sell close to, it not over, 3 million copies if it wants to become the best-selling game in the franchise of all time, and hopefully, it will keep its sales up!

The Return of Metroid Prime

The Metroid Prime Trilogy could already be remastered for the Nintendo Switch and ready to go, according to VentureBeat Journalist Jeff Grubb.

Originally released for the Wii back in 2009, the Metroid Prime Trilogy combines Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in a compact version for the first-person shooter franchise.

The journalist reported this piece of news in a Giant Bomb stream over the weekend, that Nintendo has been holding off the release and announcement due to restricted QA resources during the pandemic.

Why A Metroid Prime Trilogy Remaster is Likely

The reports given by Grubb of a Metroid Prime Trilogy Remaster matches a claim from another key journalist, Imran Khan, back in early 2019.

Grubb divulges on his live stream that Nintendo have the game “sitting in their pockets” and it is up to the company to decide when will be the right time for its release, as they can afford to wait for its drop.

Grubb goes on to explain the main reason for the supposed delay from Nintendo is due to restrictions to Nintendo’s QA testing processes during the pandemic. The company could only focus on one or two games at a time and Japan is still dealing with these issues, so it is unlikely the process is going to open up any time soon.

Grubb also believes the Metroid Prime Trilogy Remaster would be a “great marketing beat” for the imminent Metroid Prime 4, so the company could be holding out until that is also ready.

However there are reports from others where they don’t believe this is the case. Earlier this year, a former Retro Studios design lead, Mike Wilken, said he was sceptical of the game being ported to Nintendo Switch as it would be a “Herculean effort”, due to the complexity of translating the third Metroid Prime game’s Wii controls to a Switch set up.

What is currently in store for Metroid…

Nintendo recently announced Metroid Dread, the seris’ first mainline 2D installment in almost 20 years, which will be dropping on Nintendo Switch this October.

Nintendo also announced back in 2019 it had restarted the development for Metroid 4 after deciding to let Retro Studios take over the project from its original developer that was never announced.
