Another classic arcade game is set to hit the switch Eshop this week, this time being super packman. Here is a description of the gameplay, courtesy of the International Arcade Museum:

Instead of dots, Pac-Man eats fruits and prizes such as apples, bunches of bananas, doughnuts, hamburgers, fried eggs, ears of corn, sneakers, pieces of cakes, raspberries, limes, cups of coffee, mushrooms, Galaxians, bells and shamrocks. In order to gain access to the passages that contain these items, Pac-Man must eat keys to open specific doorways. As the levels increase, the keys open less convenient entryways.

The maze layout is identical for each board, but the maze walls do change color from board to board. The “side door escape route” works just like Pac-Man you can lose the ghosts easily. There are energizers that function like Pac-Man energizers, but there are also two “super” energizers that increase your size and give you a super speed option accessed from the control panel. While at super size, pressing the super speed button will make you approximately twice as fast. Pac-Man can safely pass through ghosts when he is big. The ghosts will become longer and thinner when the super energizer is eaten. This is to give the effect of Super Pac-Man “flying” over the ghosts. If the ghosts are blue before the super energizer is eaten, they will remain regular size, and Pac-Man can eat them as a normally-energized Pac-Man would.

In the middle of the maze, there is a flashing star between two boxes that display the bonus fruits or prizes: one box displays the current fruit or prize and the other displays a rotating selection of them. Pac-Man can eat the star to score points and if he eats the star when they match, there will be a large bonus score.

Occasionally, there will be a bonus stage where Pac-Man will automatically be “Super” and will have to eat everything in the maze before time runs out. During this stage, there are no ghosts to pursue him. The familiar cartoon sequences also appear in this game and are perhaps some of the best of the Pac-Man series.

So imagine my surprise when Facebook Gaming released a free-to-play Pac-Man game that not only features gameplay with up to four players, but also a Mario Maker-like maze creation mode! The game is Pac-Man Community.

In addition to the modes mentioned above, there is also a Watch Tab option, letting players spectate the creators playing the game. This mode lets you optionally take control of Pac-Man or the ghosts if you’re feeling adventurous! It’s good to hear Pac-Man Community has built-in social mechanics, partly for accessibility, partly for the sake of the Facebook boomers that post Messenger texts on their wall by accident!

But for those of you who are more into the competitive scene, don’t you worry mon petit bourgeois! Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play Pac-Man 99, a Battle Royale take on the classic game.

When the film Tron was released in 1982, no-one believed that the video game would go on to make more than the film did.

The previous few years had been some of the biggest in gaming, some of the games that were released are still some of the highest-grossing titles ever. Although Tron was a great game, it didn’t quite live up to the big hits in the previous years.

Tron may not have lived up to the likes of Pac-Man and Space Invaders but that didn’t stop it being a successful game. Tron the video game went on to make more money than the film even did. Tron the film made a total gross of $33 million so the video game managed to make even more than that. Tron was even introduced onto the Xbox 360 arcade in 2008.

Tron may not be one of the best games of the 1980’s but it was definitely a great one.

The start of the new decade saw the release of one of the biggest ever video games, Pac-Man. In a time that was dominated by shooter arcade games, Pac-Man managed to storm onto the scene. Pac-Man managed to create a new genre of video games, maze chase games.

Pac-Man became one of the biggest pop-culture icons on the 1980’s due to its incredible popularity. Pac-Man generated over $2.5 billion by the 1990’s making it not only one of the highest grossing arcade games of all time, but also one of the highest grossing video games ever.

As surprising as it sounds, the idea for Pac-Man came from pizza. When 27 year old Toru Iwatani decided to order a pizza for dinner, it inspired him in several ways. The pizza gave Iwatani the design for Pac-Man as he had already eaten two slices, the rest of the pizza resembled a mouth. It also gave Iwatani the idea for the game, he wanted to create a game that was based on eating. Pac-Man was developed and published by Namco when it was first released in Japan and it was then licensed for distribution in the United States by Midway.

The idea of the game was that the player controls Pac-Man and has to eat all of the pac-dots so that you could move onto the next level. Trying to stop you from eating the pac-dots were four different ghosts that would chase you, when they make contact with you, you would lose a life. Alternatively you could eat the ghosts when you got one of four power-ups which were located in each of the four corners of the maze.

When Pac-Man was first released in Japan it didn’t get the best response due to the insane popularity of Space Invaders but after a poor start it was released in the United States and soon picked up. Pac-Man went on to make over $1 billion in its first year alone. Pac-Man is the second highest grossing video game of all time making a total $12.8 billion since 1980.

The world record us currently held by David Race who managed to get a score of 3,333,360 in a total time of 3 hours, 28 minutes and 49 seconds.

Pac-Man is still to this day, one of the biggest icons in popular culture. Now just imagine if Iwatani decided not to get a pizza for dinner that night…

80’s gaming – Pac-Man

Gaming in the 1980’s brought us some iconic games in the form of Donkey Kong, Tetris and, of course, the Super Mario Bros! To kick start this awesome decade of gaming was the ghost-munching Pac-Man. Released in 1980 by game develop Namco, the idea of the game was to control Pac-Man through a maze, eating Pac-docs whilst also, when giving the chance, eat the enemies. Due to its popularity, game developers Namco decided to release a Mrs. Pac-Man version only two years later.

Being among the most famous arcade games of all time, Pac-Man is surely one of the most recognized gaming figures in history.

Pac-Man and Google Maps

You can now play Pac-Man on your Google Maps! Makes travelling a whole lot more exciting..

Google have made is possible for you to turn your travel route into a Pac-Man extravaganza! By pressing the Pac-Man icon in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, your current location and where you’re travelling to will turn into a level from the game. No only this, but the experience comes with in-game sound effects and a very limited amount of music.

The maps include curved and diagonal roads which are far more superior to what you will find when playing the actual Pac-Man game. There is one restriction, however.. You do need a certain amount of roads to be able to play like the actual game.

This was all discovered yesterday and could have been an (early) April Fool’s joke from Google, but we don’t know ?! You can check it our for yourself HERE.

A Pac-Man themed restaurant, named ‘Level 257’, has opened in Chicago at the Woodfield Mall

A Pac-Man themed restaurant has now opened in Woodfield Mall, Chicago, and is a wonderful 40,000 square feet. The restaurant, Level 257, is only currently open for some though! “Beta testers” are being let in to book reservations and sample the cuisine and entertainment before the grand opening to the public, which will happen later this year.

With seating for 180 people, Level 257 not only serves food! It includes a ping-pong table, bowling alley and, of course, Pac-Man video games to play. Amongst an array of other delights; one being the themed cocktails, yay! These include such names as ‘1 Up’, ‘Midway’ and ‘Game Over’.

The venue name, Level 257, derives from a reference to the game’s killscreen, which appears on the 256th board. All in all, this glorious restaurant promises to offer a “fun dining” experience for all!
