Alan Wake is a cult classic game for a good reason. Partly it came out at the wrong time, being a horror/Horror adjacent game coming out in the late 2000s when the genre as a whole was pretty much dead. Partly it was because the Boom of 80s/Steven king inspired stories hasn’t hit yet, which Alan wake clearly falls into. The game did fine upon launch, and definitely garnered a cult following over time, but it only really did ok, and plans for a sequel were scrapped indefinitely. The closest we got was the (probably) none-cannon spin off “Alan Wake’s American Nightmare” which is good for the 3 hours it takes to complete, but was far from a true sequel to the Dark Adventure that had preceded it.

Then Remedy, the developers behind Alan Wake, made Control. While not a sequel as such, it quickly became very clear that Control and Alan Wake shared more than a parent developer. Control was not coy about it sharing a universe with the now pushing decade old Alan Wake, and this, combined with the announcement of a HD remaster of the first game (rest in peace my sweet american nightmare remaster children, your time will come), hinted to fans that Remedy where not done with Alan and his books yet.

All of this came to a head at the game awards, at which Alan Wake 2 was officially announced, along with a teaser trailer. This game awards was actually just generally a good time for games which came out a decade ago and never got a sequel despite ending on cliffhangers, as warhammer 40K space marine 2 was also announced.

Alan Wake 2 has been confirmed by remedy to be a departure from the first game, with this one going for a much more pure horror tone. Remedy are also saying they are aiming for a M rating rather than the original games T rating, which means they will be more free to try new things and push the boat out with this game.

Remedy have also said they are going to go dark on the project for a short time on the game, and that we shouldn’t expect any updates on the game for a while. While a 2023 release date was also mentioned in the trailer, I wouldn’t hold my breath for it right now, especially with this “going dark” line. I think its much more likely we will see it 2024/25 at this rate.

You can grab Alan Wake Remastered from go2games.com

The Finnish video development company is expanding its company to gain more Nordic talent

Remedy Entertainment, the Finnish video game developers that have brought us games such as Alan Wake, Control, Max Payne, and most recently CrossfireX, has announced it will be opening a new studio in Sweden.

Due to the global pandemic, a lot of video game developers have had to make drastic changes to maintain work and keep safe, and Remedy Entertainment was no exception in this. Now it is transferring its hybrid work model to its Swedish subsidiary.

Remedy Entertainment in Sweden

The video game developer announced on its website that the company has embraced a more hybrid model of working and that multiple Sweden–based senior game developers have joined the new studio working fully remotely from the “second-best Nordic country”. The developers have been led by Johnny Mang, the General Manager of the company’s Vanguard project since last year.

There were new job listings for Remedy Entertainment back in October, but the Finnish developer stated it is still looking to hire up to 25 developers in Sweden by the end of 2022. The company is planning to open a new workspace during the first half of 2022 for its Sweden-based developers so that they can meet together in the office when needed.

We understand that everyone is different, and has different needs, on different days. Some days are best spent focused, headphones on, working on something cool, whereas other days, such as when teams are working on planning, perhaps would benefit from in-person facetime. The hybrid model is about letting people choose the method that works best for them, on any given day.” – James Salt, Game Director.

Sweden is home to hundreds of video game companies as any enthusiastic gamer would know, so having Remedy Entertainment expand its offices to the likes of Stockholm is a great way of expanding the company. Remedy Entertainment recommends Sweden-based developers should keep an eye out for its Careers page to know when the company are hiring for its future projects.

We revisit one of horror’s finest.

Over the last couple of months, there have been rumours circulating regarding a potential Alan Wake sequel. Well, these rumours turned out to be more than mere speculation as an Alan Wake remastered was announced at the PlayStation showcase yesterday. It is not the sequel we thought it may be, but it is another Alan Wake game nonetheless.

We were given the release date of October 5th and a trailer (see below).

The remastered game will include the base game and the two expansions, The Signal and The Writer, published by Epic Games. It will be made available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC and in lovely 4k. The first Alan Wake title was, of course, an Xbox exclusive; therefore, PlayStation players will be able to experience the game for the first time and with next-gen graphics, no less. The original was ported to PC two years post-release in 2012, but for many people, this will be their first chance to get their hands on the game.

Alan Wake is a great game, I can tell you that from personal experience, and it is truly a blessing to be able to relive the psychological horror all over again with a modern touch.

As always, the title will be available from our Go2Games website for both pre-order and upon release.

The time is nigh…

The latest investor report by developer Remedy Entertainment has suggested that production for Alan Wake 2 is now in full swing. The report stated that both games included in its two-project publishing deal with Epic Games are progressing well, with its “AAA game project” – widely thought to be that highly-anticipated Alan Wake sequel – moving into full production, while its second “smaller-scale game” remains in “full production mode”, too.

Of course, we know that Remedy signed a co-publishing and development agreement with 505 games for a multiplayer spin-off game of the award-winning Control, alongside agreeing to collaboration terms for a future, bigger-budget control game.

Remedy CEO Tero Virtala notes: “I am happy with the progress we have made so far in 2021… Our financial position is stronger than before. Control continues to reach new players, expands into new games, and is a strong proof of our ability to create category-defining games and brands. Our multi-project model is continuously developing, and we are approaching a phase where we can launch new games more often and more regularly. We are on track to reach our ambitious long-term growth objectives.”

We became aware of the upcoming Alan Wake sequel in late March (see below) but have heard very little since then. Remedy, of course, obtained the publishing rights to the franchise from Microsoft in 2019. Still, at the time, the studio was busy with Control, which took place in the same universe and featured an Alan Wake expansion. It seems that although not directly working on the title, they have been steadily setting up the Alan Wake sequel throughout their journey with Control.

Rumor: Remedy's project that they are doing together with Epic Games is ALAN WAKE 2 according to Game Mess Show mastermind Jeff Grubb

Remedy has confirmed that it is also working on a new game that again takes place in the same universe as both Control and Alan Wake. This may be an entirely new IP. With so much still up in the air and the subject of so much speculation, all we can do is wait for further details. Hopefully, Remedy releases further details on their upcoming projects sooner rather than later.

The 2019 action-adventure game Control’s developer, Remedy Entertainment, has announced that the game is receiving a multiplayer spinoff title.

Alongside this, Remedy is also working on a direct sequel, which they described as a “future, bigger-budget Control game.” Both titles will be co-published by Remedy and 505 Games, with whom the studio has struck a deal.

Control, of course, did not have a multiplayer mode. The new spinoff title, codenamed Condor, will be a four-player cooperative player-versus-environment game. Any player-versus-player combat was not mentioned.

The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and XBOX Series X/S.

The co-CEOs of Digital Bros Group, which owns 505 Games, said in a statement that “As a multiplayer game, Condor has the potential to engage the gaming community in the long run.” This points to the potential for Condor to be a game-as-service with microtransactions, loot boxes, or other paid content.

The studios have “outlined high-level collaboration terms to further expand the Control franchise,” with more details to come in the future. It’s unclear what direction these sequels or future games will take, as no announcement has been made about the continuation or expansion of Control‘s story. Regardless, the Control franchise is set to be expanded with bigger-budget games.

Remedy confirmed that 2010’s Alan Wake takes place in the same universe as the Federal Bureau of Control and its director, Jesse Faden. It has been revealed that Alan Wake is also getting a sequel. It appears fans of both Control and Alan Wake have a lot to be excited about in the future.
