Between the Roblox devs suing a hacker for (among other things) reporting false claims of a terrorist attack and the Apple Store becoming subject to policy changes making it more developer-friendly, seems they’re starting to go through the ringer on this one. On a scale from Nintendo to Activision Blizzard, I’d say Apple is at a solid Amazon on the Stefan Company-Criticism Scale.

According to a report from The Information, the US Justice Department is investigating Apple over antitrust issues and claims of popular MMO children’s game Roblox being an area of interest for the prosecutors.

Now you see, during the Apple trial with Epic Games, the Fortnite-owning company claimed Apple gave Roblox “a free pass” regarding it’s policy of not allowing video games to advertise other gaming store platforms within them.  The vast majority of games in Roblox are user-created pieces, some of which can be charged for, leading to Epic Games going on to compare the Roblox store to The Epic Games store, calling out Apple’s hypocrisy!

I’ll play Devil’s Advocate briefly and admit that the user-made levels are often made with in-game tools and assets built into Roblox, whereas Epic Games does not provide assistance to unrelated third-party game developers. In my overall opinion though, the individuals behind many Roblox user-made levels are not related to the company as employees in any legal capacity (to my knowledge). So, a case can be made for those user-made games in the Roblox system being from third-party actors.

Roblox recently altered wording on it’s website, claiming it offers “experiences” instead of “games” when Trystan Kosmynka (App Store executive) claimed Roblox did not violate the Apple Store’s rules, claiming the company did not view Roblox content “as a game”… In a stunning leap of Olympic-level mental gymnastics, Trystan then went on to say the Roblox conten is similar to “the experiences in Minecraft”!! Like… Trystan… Honey. Baby. Etymologist-extraordinaire! You do realise comparing one game to another game doesn’t exactly help your case, right? Food for thought!

When Roblox Corp was asked to define the difference between “a game” and an “experience” after changing it’s website description, the company preceded to say… Well, we don’t know, but I doubt it would have been accurate to the dictionary definitions! This wouldn’t have happened if someone on your board just picked up a book on phenomenology, I hear it’s notoriously simple and not mind-bendingly complex in the slightest!

The DoJ is also looking into complaints that Apple has restricted location access for third-party apps while allowing its own apps and services full access to location data.

Apple has been adjusting the App Store to let third-party developers advertise contact information such as emails regarding external companies and stores linked to games not developed by Apple. The DoJ investigation is ongoing. Apple’s request for extra time to implement more store changes was denied, so if Apple does not get a stay by December 9, the company will need to comply with the original ruling.

In a lawsuit filed by the creators of Roblox (popular free-to-play online children’s game) against one Benjamin Robert Simon (YouTuber ‘Ruben Sim‘) for allegedly leading a ‘cybermob’ that shut down a developer conference, as well as attempts to upload nude photos of himself and Adolf Hitler… Not nude photos of Adolf Hitler, thank god!

The lawsuit was filed in California, with Roblox seeking $1.6 million in damages. The lawsuit also claims Benjamin was banned for a number of years due to racist and homophobic slurs, as well as sexual harassment on Roblox. Considering 99.69% of reports of harassment in online spaces gets swept under the rug, I’m inclined to believe Benny the Jet over here probably stepped over quite a few boundaries to get noticed for that.

“Repeatedly circumventing the technological barriers erected to block Defendant Simon from accessing the Roblox platform after he was permanently banned from the platform and instructing and encouraging others to do the same” – Roblox V Ruben Lawsuit.

The lawsuit also accuses Benjamin of fraud, breach of contract, and tortious interference

In a San-Francisco report in October 2021, Simon De Beauvoir over here thought it would be hi-larious to post false messages on Twitter that police were searching for an Islamic extremist at the Roblox Developers Conference. That’s rich considering he was making that claim on the platform that let Isis have an official account for a time! The false claim lead to a police investigation shutting down the Roblox Developers Conference, costing $50,000.

A series of now-deleted Tweets also show Benjamin glamorizing the YouTube Headquarters shooting of April 3rd 2018.

Roblox has an estimated worth of some $45 billion, but the game does allow content creators to make their own games on the platform and make money from them, so as far as my leftist ass can advocate for capitalism, at least they’re helping budding game creators get their start in a small way… At least, that’s what I would say if it wasn’t for the casual exploitation of budding developers in other ways, but for more on that, check this video on the topic.

Roblox fans were left bemused this week after the game was unavailable for three days. As a result, their CEO has had to publicly come out and apologise for the games issues.

It seems that players started experiencing issues early on October 29. This lead to Roblox addressing the issue on Twitter by stating “We Know you’re having issues using Roblox right now. We’re sorry and working hard to get things back to normal”.

Unfortunately for players, the problem wasn’t sorted until late on October 31. Roblox subsequently tweeted that “Roblox is back online. Thanks again for your understanding and support. Our CEO, Savid Baszucki, shared an update on the outage steps taken to address it”.

CEO Baszucki Apologises For Roblox Mishap

The CEO of the online game platform had this to say upon the matter:

“We are sorry for the length of time it took us to restore service,” he said. “A key value at Roblox is ‘Respect the Community’, and in this case, we apologise for the inconvenience to our community.”

He went on to explain the main cause of the problem.

“A core system in our infrastructure became overwhelmed, prompted by a subtle bug in our backend service communications while under heavy load.This was not due to any peak in external traffic or any particular experience”.

“Rather the failure was caused by the growth in the number of servers in our datacenters. The result was that most services at Roblox were unable to effectively communicate and deploy.

“Due to the difficulty in diagnosing the actual bug, recovery took longer than any of us would have liked. Upon successfully identifying this root cause, we were able to resolve the issue through performance tuning, re-configuration, and scaling back of some load. We were able to fully restore service as of this afternoon.”

This will come as great relief to Roblox fans. Nevertheless, questions will still remain about the reliability of Roblox servers. Hopefully this is a one-time incident and won’t be repeated in the future. Especially with this KSI concert lined up!

The YouTube sensation turned hip-hip artist is hosting his own virtual concert on Roblox

KSI, otherwise known as Olajide William ‘JJ’ Olatunji, is the next artist to be hosting his own virtual content in the metaverse of online events, titled KSI Launch Party on Roblox.

Epic Games and Roblox have been leading the way in terms of virtual concerts. As mentioned with Ariana Grande’s virtual concert that was hosted over the past weekend, virtual concerts are the next big thing during the pandemic and many artists have or are signing up to perform online instead of risking the chance to go back on stage.

KSI x Roblox

Roblox has partnered with global music companies BMG, Proper Loud, MBA Live and KSI himself in order to pull this event off.

It’s part of Roblox’s plan to expand into education and music to be able to get people onto its platform and spend more time daily in what is known as the metaverse (think Ready Player One if you have read or seen the movie (the book is way better in my opinion)).

KSI’s virtual concert will be an interactive experience that will showcase songs from KSI’s latest album All Over The Place, which was released last month. The performance will take place on August 13 at 4PM BST and encore performances will be available to stream hourly over the weekend. There will also be a first-of-its-kind VIP after-party experience for fans, including an exclusive virtual Q&A on August 14 on the Roblox platform.

The launch party will take place under the London Eye on a dance floor with a boxing-ring theme. Before it premieres, Roblox users will be able to hop into cars and race each other through London as well as purchase exclusive virtual merchandise, including three limited edition items. After the show, KSI will keep the virtual party going with a VIP rooftop after-party where he will hang out and live chat with fans.
