In an interview with The Verge, Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai claimed that if another Smash game were to be made, it would have to have a smaller roster.

“I think we’ve reached the limit, at least in terms of volume and content and fighters […] If I were to have the opportunity to work on another Super Smash Bros. game, that means we would have to shrink the roster, but we need to think about whether fans would be pleased about that” – Masahiro Sakurai.

To briefly recap some of my past covering of Sakurai and Smash news, has been considering retirement in large part due to the intense workload of his job, while also stating that there is still potential another Super Smash Bros game could be made as long as he’s leading the production.

Since then, Sakurai has admitted he would be comfortable having less creative control, as ‘I’ve been doing too much of the work myself’ and his words about not wanting to restrict the series’ longevity by focusing on “just one man’s vision” is very pleasing to hear. Also quite the coincidence I find out about this the day after my brief aside about having to (metaphorically) “kill your darlings” in my article covering The Last Of Us TV show news and Neil Druckmann’s involvement… Speaking of brief asides, here’s something for any Quentin Tarantino fans reading this!

As far as (hypothetically) shrinking the Smash Bros roster goes, I highly doubt that will be the case, as Sakurai mainly seems to cite technological limitations as the reason for keeping the roster at it’s current maximum. Considering the rise of things like Nintendo releasing the OLED Switch (psst, which we have!) and tech in general improving at a steady rate, we may well be able to make fighting games with rosters in the hundreds in a few years give-or-take.

Speaking of fighting games… Capcom, Marvel, DC, NetherRealm, JUST MAKE OUT ALREADY! The Mortal Kombat folks got into punch-ups with DC superheroes that one time. The Marvel superheros got into punch-ups with the Street Fighter cast… Well, multiple times actually- Y’all should do a four-way crossover, wouldn’t that be something.

Me wanting Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat to crossover because they both have spin-off games fighting different Superhero squads

Product Poems:

There was once an AMIIBO called Bowser, called Lucas to talk about flowers.

The fun never stops with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! Three years on from its initial release, the Nintendo brawler is set to receive another character adjustment in its next update. Despite the fact we’re yet to know the launch date of said update, we really can’t wait for this one. It has been reported that players will finally be given a solid, unchanging version of the game, adding extra competitiveness to the whole experience. This is what we love to hear.

Previously, we reported on update 13, where they added the iconic Sora to star alongside an already impressive roster. We’ve loved playing as the Kingdom Hearts hero so far, as have the modding community. Check out one funny design they’ve had with the character right here. We’re tell you right now, its certainly not something you’d expect to see!

Let’s hope the 13.0.1 update helps improve this game even more. Nintendo’s game has already received universal praise worldwide in its lifespan, so we struggle to see how that’s possible. Nevertheless, we’re sure they’ll find a way. Check out the announcement tweet down below:

Ver. 13.0.1 of Super #SmashBrosUltimate is coming soon! This update includes the final fighter adjustments, meaning replay data from previous versions will be incompatible. Convert your replays by going to Vault -> Replays -> Replay Data -> Convert to Video, before updating. pic.twitter.com/XokoArQa7N

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Continues With Improvements

We’re all here for another Smash Bros. update, regardless of how big it is! Obviously, the patches have been a big deal for us players for some time now. We’ve seen certain characters being nerfed, small changes to designs and even some buffs, meaning the character tier list was constantly fluctuating. Sometimes a character would be ridiculously overpowered, but then significantly weakened in the patch after. As such, players have struggled to decide which characters are the strongest, although professional player Esam has Pikachu, Joker, and Palutena as some of the best.

Unfortunately, we still do not know when the next change is going to happen. All we know is that it will feature “final fighter adjustments”, but even that’s quite a vague statement. What exactly do they mean by that? It seems that we’re just going to have to wait to find out further information, but that’s part of the fun of it, no? Ok maybe not, but still.

Despite how the update goes, we’re just looking forward to the potential of a ‘stable, unchanging build of the game’. It will give us peace of mind when choosing our characters, which is all we really ask for. Finally, competitive players will be able to develop their favoured characters without worries of change. That’s just what we like to see.

This isn’t something we expected to see in Super Smash Bros. Whilst the franchise is known for allowing fan made modes, no one thought that someone would add a shotgun to Sora. At least, I didn’t that’s for sure. Most modders go and create additional characters or design all-new costumes for existing ones. We’ve seen some ingenious creations throughout the games lifespan, such as a Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7-themed costume for Pichu. This is certainly taking things to the next level though.

For those unfamiliar with Sora, he is from the Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts series. He was recently added to the character roster due to his iconic statue in the gaming world. His iconic weapon is usually a keyblade, which is a uniquely shaped sword. Subsequently, he uses it to strike down his enemies or even cast spells to summon Fire, Lightning and Ice magic. What happens when one eager modder takes it away from him?

It makes for some hilarious viewing, that’s what.

My second ever #SmashBrosUltimate mod is now available on Gamebanana: Sora with a Shotgun!
:)))))https://t.co/ainNjO7cCV

Super Smash Bros. Makes For Hilarious Viewing With Sora Shotgun

The mod is very aptly titled ” Sora with a Shotgun”. Very straight to the point. It was created by modder unbecomingname so we have them to thank for it. Also, the shotgun is taken from Valve’s Team Fortress 2, and can be seen in the hands of most of its characters. However, Sora holding it just makes it that much stranger, and funnier too.

Not only this, but the mod comes alongside a custom-made Super Smash Bros. Ultimate UI image in the character select screen. This has him running and loading the shotgun, which we’ve got to say is a pretty cool animation. If that’s not enough for you either, it even includes custom audio, with the reload and shotgun blast sound effect made when casting magic. His “Firaga” spell takes a whole different twist now.

Since the shotgun is just a mod, there are sometimes things that don’t quite adjust. An example of this is Sora’s hands are still positioned to hold the sword. But what’d you expect? Not everything is going to be perfect. If anything, it makes the whole thing that bit funnier, and that’s what its all about really.

BACK ON TOPIC: Sakurai has been back at it again with the lads at Famitsu and while he seemingly isn’t sure about a potential sequel, Sakurai has mused on the possibility of Ultimate not necessarily being the end, which is a big statement considering Sakurai is to Smash Bros what Hayao Miyazaki is to the concept of retirement! Which is to say, just because it’s their “last” project doesn’t always mean it’s their last project entirely. Speaking of which, can’t wait to see Miyazaki’s take on internet commentary in his upcoming film, fingers crossed he actually bucks the stereotype of boomers not getting the internet.

With that said, Sakurai has mentioned to Kotaku sometime ago that he was also considering retirement in part due to the fact that he hasn’t had consecutive days off work for around 10 years. So on the one hand, awesome if we get more good Smash content, but also no big deal if he decides to leave the industry because I know if I was in his position, I’d probably be a walking talking embodiment of that one Charlie Chaplin sketch where he gets so overworked that he doesn’t even realize when the hours have clocked in.

The following excerpts and summaries from Sakurai’s Famitsu column have been translated Siliconera and Video Games Chronicle, published by Ryokutya2089:

Sakurai claimed that before he confirms anything concrete, he’s still in discussions with Nintendo regarding exactly what or how a sequel could be a success, considering Smash Ultimate is already a bestseller for the company.

Another stipulation in line with every other Smash game up to now is that Sakurai would have creative control if the project ended up being another Smash Bros game, as he ‘currently doesn’t see a path’ in which a game would exist without his involvement. Even some allusions to possible drama when he mentions Nintendo’s last attempt to hand the franchise to another creator ‘didn’t go well’, so fingers crossed some juicy details drop a week from now so I can say that statement was foreshadowing all along!

I fancy myself a bit of an artiste, I know “my darling baby” syndrome when I see it, which is a shame to see so prominently in creative spaces because I wouldn’t want my take on an idea to be the only thing ever. There’s inherent good in letting different people with different ideas and takes steer the wheel of a franchise, variety is the spice of life. Not to mention games are FAR from a one-man job, you have entire company-large teams dedicated to fine-tuning things and not all of the choices made by every person on the team were dictated by Sakurai alone. Otherwise, optimistic to seeing how things progress.

It’s not just Sora you will be seeing more of on Nintendo Switch, but the entire Kingdom Hearts franchise is being added too!

If you haven’t been on the internet for the past 24 hours (after that frightful apocalypse on Monday, it is understandable), then you will have missed the news that Kingdom Hearts fan-favourite and most requested character to join Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Sora, is finally joining the latest Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC roster.

(I know, we’ll get them next time Wailugi stans).

Yet not only is Sora joining the popular fighting brawl game, but the entire Kingdom Hearts franchise will be added to Nintendo Switch in the near future!

Kingdom Hearts on Switch

Announced by Masahiro Sakurai during the final Smash Direct, the creator of Super Smash Bros said that the games developed by Square Enix are being added to the Switch and will allow fans to follow Sora’s entire story until now.

Fans can expect Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3 to be added to the Nintendo Switch in the near future. Release dates and prices for the games have yet to be confirmed, however, it has been stated they will be cloud streaming games only, so you will be needing a strong WI-FI connection to access these games.

This is the first time the majority of the games will be available on the Switch. The only other Kingdom Hearts game that has made it onto the Switch so far is Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, and even then, there have been very released on Nintendo of the RPG. The Kingdom Hearts games were also finally added to PC earlier this year and this addition to the Nintendo Switch (along with Sora being finally added to Smash), makes the perfect celebratory event for Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary next year.
