Joy-Con drift’s reign may be over…

While the Switch has become one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles of all time, the hybrid handheld has suffered from one major controversy – that being joy-con drift. While the console manufacturer has done little to resolve the problem since it was first reported all the way back in 2017, it seems as though they may have finally quietly fixed the issue.

Following the recent release of Zelda Skyward Sword: HD, Nintendo also released Zelda-themed Switch Joy-Cons. One Twitter user Mario_RPG_Fan opted to open up their joy-cons and discovered that two strips seem to have been strategically placed in a vital spot which (YouTuber VK discovered back in early July) could actually help not only prevent but fix joy-cons affected by the dreaded ‘drift.’

Nintendo has not publicly addressed this latest hardware revision; they had actively avoided questions regarding Joy-Con drift when recently asked whether the new Switch OLED model would suffer from the same issue. Since the company is being sued for issues relating to Joy-Con drift, it is unlikely they will ever directly address it publicly. Will Nintendo also include this addition to the Joy-Cons for the OLED model? It seems likely. Why wouldn’t they?

Hopefully, whether publicly announced or not, this latest tweak does, in fact, help prevent joy-con drift, putting an end to a 4 year period of gamers falling victim to one of gaming’s biggest villains. It will be interesting to see whether the upcoming Switch (OLED version) also features this joy-con hardware revision and whether this truly will permanently fix the issue.

A promising start…

When the original game released for the Wii in 2011, it came with mixed reviews. Much of the negative response it received was related to a few questionable game mechanics. It seems Nintendo has listened as they have made some quality-of-life changes for the upcoming Switch remaster.

First and foremost, players no longer have a fixed camera angle like in the Wii edition. Skyward Sword HD now lets you rotate the camera freely. Players will have a choice between motion controls like that of the Wii edition or a new button-based format. According to the official Zelda account on Twitter, players who opt for the new, button-based controls can hold down the left bumper to free up the right stick for scanning the environment.

However, that right stick is a crucial part of Skyward Sword HD’s updated control scheme, acting as a replacement for the motion-based sword attacks that vexed players in the original. This means (at least as far as I can tell without the game in my hands) that players won’t be able to attack and move the camera simultaneously. An annoyance, for sure, but it’s still better than nothing.

Other more general improvements include enhanced visuals and framerates, a reduction in companion Fi’s interruptions, the ability to fast-forward through dialogue and skip cutscenes, and no more repeat item descriptions after you’ve already encountered them. Many of these details contributed to the game’s poor reception in 2011, therefore, it seems Nintendo is committed to getting it right this time around.

The first review for Skyward Sword HD has also been rolled out. This review was done by Japanese publication Famitsu, with western reviews still a few hours away from publication at the time of writing. Famitsu’s scoring system has four different reviewers rate the game out of ten; in this case, the magazine’s reviewers opted for scores of eight, nine, nine, and eight, resulting in an overall score of 34/40. A strong start for the latest Legend of Zelda title.

An extremely rare and sealed NES cartridge of The Legend of Zelda has been put on auction and it’s already working up to cost a rather large sum of money.

Zelda History in the Making…

The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most popular franchises of all time. It’s become a household name for the Nintendo family and has over 27 different titles that have sold over 52 million copies since its first release in 1986. We’re coming up to celebrating 35 years of the action-adventure game, so this piece of news is perfect for any die-hard fans out there, even if it might already be out of your price range.

The sealed, early production copy of the first game in the groundbreaking series recently appeared on Heritage Auctions, and has been dubbed as a “true grail among games”. This is because it is not only one of the best sealed with a 9.0 Wata A sealed rating, but could also be one of the earliest productions of the game. It is a “No Rev-A” varient, which means the game was produced in 1987 before it was replaced by the “Rev-A” or “revised-A” variant in 1988. It is said the only other variant that is rarer than this, is the “NES TM” variant, the first true production run of the NES cartridge. As it stands, this varient of The Legend of Zelda is the earliest possible version of the cartridge that can be obtained on the market and it is the first public opportunity to have this collector’s item.

If that has you wanting to bid on the game, the most current bidding at the time of writing this is $110,000 (£79,372), with a buyer’s premium of $22,000 (£15,878).

Yeah. Not sure if your Rupees will be able to cover that either.

It has yet to reach the auction record for most expensive video game collectible; that title belongs to another NES cartridge for the game Super Mario Bros which sold for a bid of $660,000 (£476,240). Yet the bidding has four days left and anything could happen at that point.

If you would like to celebrate The Legend of Zelda anniversary at a much cheaper cost, Nintendo will be releasing the remastered Wii game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, in July. No other plans have been announced to celebrate the anniversary so far.
