Disney has decided to discontinue Disney Infinity. After three series of Disney Infinity games, the attraction to the game series of games has dropped and no longer worth the investment.
Disney Infinity was all about bringing characters to life and has been a very popular product over the years but interest has dropped off recently. Interest in the genre ‘toys to life’ has dropped off and Disney Interactive could no longer justify investing into the Disney Infinity games. With Disney Infinity ending production, it leaves Lego Dimensions and Skylanders as the two front runners in the ‘toys to life’ genre.
John Blackburn, the general manager of Disney Infinity said “I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.”
There will be two final releases for Disney Infinity which will be two expansion packs. One being three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass which will release later this month. The other expansion pack will be a Finding Dory Play Set which will release in June.
Disney have not only discontinued Disney Infinity but they have also no longer continuing in the publishing console game business. The decision has cost nearly 300 people their jobs at Disney Interactive.
Activision have also said that Skylanders is underperforming, is this the beginning of the end for ‘toys to life?’
