Sony Rewards to be in full swing next year with a different system
Given the many deals to be scooped out, and the debut of new games out throughout the year, being a gamer isn’t particularly an inexpensive hobby. For that reason, many gamers flock to opportunities to earn back when they purchase games and consoles. Unfortunately, a major opportunity for such deals appears to be coming to an end for many users.
Sony Rewards is the reward system used for its players, which gives players tied to a PlayStation Store account points for each purchase made through the store that can then be used towards game discounts and purchases. However, some new requirements are being put in place in order to earn points.
In an email that had been sent to subscribers today, major changes were announced for Sony’s reward program that will begin on January 1, 2022. Currently, all users are able to earn one point per pound spent on the PlayStation Store, and users can earn more if they make their purchase through a Sony or PlayStation credit card. This will all end at the end of the month, however, and from that point forward, only Sony or PlayStation credit cardholders will be able to earn points.
The reason why this change has been made by Sony is unclear. Being cut off from an opportunity to save money or gain new assets isn’t being received well by the community. Many users were annoyed at the notion of having to sign up for a specific credit card in order to earn points, while others swore off the idea of shopping at the PlayStation Store entirely.
For those who still have points earned through the store, those points should remain viable and active. These points are set to expire five years after they were acquired, but the inactivity on the Sony rewards platform will cause them to expire in 18 months. Those who currently have points and either don’t have or won’t sign up for a credit card through Sony will want to use them in the near future.
Thankfully for PlayStation gamers, rumors claim a new PlayStation program rivaling Xbox Game Pass is on its way. While signing up for a subscription service – even a valuable one – isn’t the same as earning rewards for one’s purchases, it may at least provide a way for players to gain access to AAA titles without spending too much
