After nearly 30 years of partnership, FIFA and Electronic Arts have confirmed they will split. This news comes in the wake of EA’s recent announcement of EA Sports FC, a new football game that is set to rival FIFA. FIFA has since announced it will launch its own rival game, which is sure to cause huge competition in the gaming world. This is definitely an exciting development to watch!

The company has insisted that despite detaching from the FIFA brand, their games will not change dramatically. With over 300 licensing deals behind the games, ‘the same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes’ will all be portrayed in EA Sports FC, they stated.

FIFA also chimed in with a statement claiming the split from EA will allow new football video games to be developed with third-party publishers, which will ultimately ‘provide more choice for football and gaming fans’. The news of the split between the two brands comes in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and will sure to be an exciting time for gaming fans around the world. Stay tuned to see how this story develops!

FIFA’s chief commercial officer, Philippe Le Floc’h, said in a statement: “FIFA has been a key partner of EA for almost three decades and we are proud of what we have achieved together. “However, the FIFA brand has grown significantly in that time and our ambition is to ensure FIFA is one of the biggest sports and entertainment brands in the world. This means giving fans more choice when it comes to how they access FIFA content.”

EA Sports’ vice president and general manager, Cam Weber, said: “We are proud of our long-standing partnership with FIFA and the role we have played in helping to grow FIFA as a global sport. We will continue to deliver extraordinary football experiences for our players, powered by our industry-leading Frostbite engine.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated “I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans,”.

“The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on – the constant is the FIFA name and it will remain forever and remain THE BEST.”

Football clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool FC have contributed to the discussions of the split on Twitter, posting a tweet with the caption ‘ We’re In The Club. Learn More July 2023’ #EASPORTSFC

The successor to PES will release later this month with nine teams to choose from

Konami announced that its yearly football similator franchise, formerly known as the Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), has now been renamed eFootball. This this year’s football entry is set for a free release on September 30; it will be available to play on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Later this autumn, iOS and Android versions are set to arrive later alongside a free and major content update for the game itself.

eFootball is set to launch with very limited content in the base game at launch. In offline play, you can choose up to nine clubs to play against an AI or a friend, as well as six stadiums to play matches in. With online play, you can expect to find matches through cross-generation matchmaking (PS5 vs PS4; Xbox Series X/S vs Xbox One).

The teams available to play as at launch are as follows:

Arsenal

Barcelona

Bayern Munich

Corinthians Paulista

Flamengo

Juventus

Manchester United

River Plate

São Paulo

The available stadiums to play in at launch are as follows:

Camp Nou

Old Trafford

Allianz Stadium

Emirates Stadium

Allianz Arena

eFootball Stadium.

The amount of content is set to increase through the game’s first update due in the autumn. This includes the implementation of their monetisation model to ensure fair rebalancing, and a variety of new modes which are set to enrichen the eFootball experience:

Creative Teams (players create their own squad similar to the myClub feature in previous PES games).

eFootball Creative League (rise up and get promoted up the league rankings by playing your Creative Team against others)

Tour Event (earn rewards through playing against AI opponents)

Challenge Event (successfully complete objectives for rewards through playing against others online)

Online Quick Match (play a casual online match with over 600 licensed teams)

Online Match Lobby

Cross-platform matchmaking (PC and consoles)

“As a digital-only title, Konami will regularly add new content and game modes after launch this Autumn,” a statement from Konami read in July.

“In the future, certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC, giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests.”

Despite the lack of content at launch that Konami have admitted to themselves, the upcoming updates will hopefully secure longterm PES fans to the franchise’s rebrand, and welcome newcomers to the eFootball scene.

From what we know so far, it seems Fifa 22 features quality of life changes that franchise fans have been screaming out for. The on-pitch game improvements have been heavily reported on, the focal point being EA’s new utilisation of HyperMotion technology for a live-action football match instead of individual players, which is expected to give the game a much more realistic and immersive feel. However, alongside this, there are also several significant changes happening to the game’s biggest modes. Two recently released EA Sports trailers go into detail on these changes.

Career Mode will allow players to create their own club, Player Career will feature revamped progression mechanics, while Ultimate Team also features new progression and customization features. All of these and more are highlighted in the trailers, which you can check out below.

Last month Konami announced it had renamed PES to eFootball and made it free-to-play and digital-only.

Konami has now come out and instructed us to treat the upcoming launch of the newly transformed eFootball as “a demo”.

Addressing questions about the game in a Twitter thread, Konami asked itself: “is early autumn launch basically a demo?”

“In many ways, yes,” Konami said. “We want people to get hands-on with eFootball as soon as possible, so we will launch with a limited number of teams and modes. Exact details to follow.”

At launch, only local matches featuring the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, and Manchester United will be available, alongside cross-generation matchmaking (PS5 vs PS4, and Xbox Series X and S vs Xbox One). You’ll be able to play against CPU teams via local matches. Initially, eFootball won’t have microtransactions, Konami clarified, which means everything will be free-to-play.

Then, later in the autumn, cross-play between all consoles and PC goes live, alongside a team-building mode (Ultimate Team-esque) and online leagues, where you “take your original team and compete in a global, competitive league”.

In the winter, Konami will add mobile controller support, full cross-play matchmaking across all platforms, including mobile when using a controller, alongside pro and amateur esports tournaments.
Konami had said it plans to sell individual game modes as optional DLC, “giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests.” One of these DLC game modes is Master League, perhaps Pro Evolution Soccer’s most famous game mode. Konami has not said how much it will cost.

There also seems to be a Battle Pass mechanic called Match Pass. Konami said Match Pass lets you “nominate and acquire your favourite players”. It’s all pretty vague at this point, but Konami described Match Pass as “a system to receive items based on matches played”. A free and paid version of Match Passes will be available.

There was some uncertainty regarding graphics being downscaled so that the game can function on all devices (i.e. iOS and Android), but Konami has addressed this, saying: “The game will take full advantage of the hardware capabilities of each supported device…We will make graphical adjustments to the mobile version, but the next-generation graphics on consoles and PC will not be downgraded”.

eFootball launches worldwide first on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 and PC via Steam early autumn, with iOS and Android to follow soon after.

This Fifa is looking to be the most ambitious yet.

EA Sports has just released an all-new gameplay trailer for Fifa 22. Admittedly, it is mostly marketing points, but it does provide us with snippets of gameplay that give us a rough idea of how the game will look on the next-gen consoles.

The focal point of the latest upcoming entry is the new HyperMotion Technology. The HyperMotion system is seemingly a major step forward in improving player realism, authenticity, and immersion. EA used to bring in a handful of players who would run around on a soundstage individually to have their motion recorded. However, with FIFA 22 and its HyperMotion system, EA recorded genuine 11v11 matches with players wearing full-body suits. They, therefore, captured authentic data from real players playing an actual football match. They then feed this data into EA’s own proprietary machine learning system that features 8.7 million data frames to create real-time animations that look more lifelike and realistic. It combines full team mocap data and machine learning. The idea is to make player movement feel more fluid and natural, creating 4000 new animations. It will be interesting to see just how big a stride towards authenticity this really is.

The technology is only available on the new-gen consoles and Stadia, leaving PC players feeling disgruntled for being left behind.

Other features include expanding the FIFA 22 competitive settings to improve fairness in the game, deeper match analysis with complete revamp of the match facts and player performance screens, and explosive sprint, which accelerates your player in contextual moments.

You can see the recent trailer below:

EA Sports released a new detailed look at the upcoming Fifa 22 title during their recent EA Play Spotlight showcase. The video featured developers speaking at length about the football game’s HyperMotion technology, tactical AI, reworked goalkeeper system, and how player feedback has informed the new game. The video is lengthy and detailed, so for any Fifa fans, kick back, grab yourself a snack and relax (see the video below).

FIFA 22 launches in September, and it won’t be the only pro football game in town. Konami just announced a major rebrand for its PES series, renamed eFootball. Konami is creating a free-to-play experience with new content and updates released over time.

Konami is turning PES into a digital-only, free-to-play franchise called eFootball.

After over two decades, the historic franchise Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) is coming to an end. Konami is rebranding its PES into a digital-only, free-to-play series.

The long-running franchise will now be known simply as eFootball, with Konami pitching the reworked brand as a “next-generation, free-to-play football simulation experience.”

The move comes after Konami decided to rename the series eFootball PES — or eFootball Winning Eleven in Japan — in 2020, initiating a gradual shift away from the PES brand.

Outlining its plans for the refreshed franchise, Konami explained eFootball will be rebuilt in Unreal Engine and support cross-platform play between console, PC, and mobile platforms.

The Japanese company claims eFootball will be a “platform” in itself, and while the core offering will be free-to-play, some game modes will be sold as optional DLC to give players “the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests.”

A full gameplay reveal is slated for August. Still, Konami has teased a new animation system built around “Motion Matching” technology that “converts the vast range of moments that players make on the pitch into a series of animations, selecting the most accurate one in real-time.”

Some features, including mobile controller support, online leagues, cross-platform matches between console, PC, and mobile, will only be rolled out in Autumn and Winter.

At launch, players can play local matches using a selection of licensed clubs, including Juventus, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, and play cross-generation matches on console platforms.

Fifa 22 will bring next-level Football realism to next-gen…

Fifa 22, releasing October 1st for all supported platforms, is said to be the most realistic edition yet. At the heart of this is an all-new “HyperMotion” system. The technology uses machine learning to produce animations in real-time, leading to more “organic” movement. It also lets EA capture the motion of pro Football players, therefore mimicking a player’s signature movements etc.

To experience HyperMotion at full effect, you need to play on either a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S or Google Stadia. Regardless, the game is still coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC (via Origin and Steam). Although EA didn’t outline differences, a Fifa 22 Legacy Edition is also coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Thankfully, there are other substantial changes which are being implemented on all platforms. EA has hinted at a “complete” revamp of the goalkeeper system, a new club creation experience in Career Mode, “reimagined” Volta Football and a FIFA Ultimate Team Heroes item set representing the tales of legendary players.

As with Madden, it’s apparent EA isn’t completely ready to drop support for previous-gen consoles. That’s not surprising given both the larger player base and shortages that limit the number of PS5 and Xbox Series owners. However, the gaming giant wants to offer a strong incentive to play on newer machines. Don’t be surprised if FIFA 23 cuts off PS4 and Xbox One players.

We are all human and we are all beset by worries on a good day. Throw into the mix a global pandemic and those worries are magnified tenfold, with an added sense of existential dread. Will things ever be the same again? Probably not. Will my job still be there when all this is over? Who knows? Why do I feel weird about venturing out to see people who I’ve known for years? What am I even doing with my life right now? For many people – myself included – these are the questions that have beset every waking hour since the before times became, well, the before times.

Dealing with things over the last year has taken many forms – from Tiger King to Tik Tok, working from home to home workouts, banana bread to Dalgona, people have re-found themselves through new experiences that have helped while away the days, the weeks, the months and indeed the last year. However, there has been one thing above all else that has dominated time spent during lockdown that is not simply a lockdown fad, but rather a lifestyle choice – video gaming.

The effect of lockdown on video games sales in the UK and Europe

2020 saw an exponential rise in sales for video games, with an estimated £7bn spent on gaming last year. This was played out by the fact that almost two-thirds of adults here in the UK turned to gaming to help them get through lockdown and amongst the younger demographic of 16-24 year olds, 92% played video games during the pandemic. The key takeaway from all of this was that half of all gamers stated that playing video games helped them get through lockdown. As Coronavirus drew the curtain down on life as we knew it, it also made mincemeat of the one thread that holds most people’s lives together – structure.

If I play as England v Germany ahead of next Tuesday’s Euros clash and win, it can only be a positive omen…

Yet in a strange way, video games have given many people that structure to their lives, in a way that say, recorded music or films and TV shows are unable to. Turning your Ultimate Team on FIFA 21 into a world-beating outfit capable of taking any gamer in the world, figuring out how to eliminate Urias Strajer in Resident Evil Village on that brand-new PS5 you managed to somehow get yourself or reconnecting with your youth by picking up where you left off all those years ago on a Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart 8 have given spiritual sustenance, mental salvation and emotional fortitude to many worrying about whether they’ll ever be able to work again, or if their mum and dad might get Covid – or worse.

I remember a time when video games were denounced as the next coming of Satan, the inspiration for school shootings – a claim that even Donald Trump made in casting blame in the wake of the Parkland shootings (nothing to do with social atomisation, gun culture and racism obvs) – and that “If you were Mario and you jumped on turtles, you were more likely to kill turtles in real life”. Yet the reality is altogether different. Video games have been the ointment to soothe and calm the worries and stresses that lockdown life has brought upon us, a way to connect with our friends in times of isolation and in some cases, a way to raise our glasses together to that most hallowed of British institutions – the local pub, recreated via Minecraft! As they say, if you can’t bring Mohammed to the mountain, you gotta bring that mountain to Mohammed! And this is just the thing – while building your local pub on Minecraft might seem like just a bit of a laugh, there are organisational skills, attention to detail, selectiveness and creativity all rolled into one task here, all of which are skills and abilities one might use in the workplace, in the classroom – in real life.

Project of an orbital colony Stanford torus, painted by Donald E.
Of course, apart from our immune systems, the biggest assault launched by the pandemic was on our mental health. My personal happy place is creating/playing music, something which has been with me ever since my days as a toddler. Like video gaming, it is a place where one can operate solo, or collaborate with others. It is often said that politicians and politics are always well behind technology and the speed at which it advances (this may well be by design, as this writer anticipates the soon-to-be incontrovertible need for an egalitarian-like-Star Trek future of fully automated luxury communism in a world tended to by machines of loving grace). The social advances made by video gaming during the pandemic vis a vis the positive effect of gaming on mental health may well have helped to write a different narrative around the place of video games in modern society. No longer should video games be blamed for the ills of society when the research and evidence is there right in front of us that gaming has had a positive effect on the well-being of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here at Go2Games, we have done our best to ensure that people do not miss out on this, partnering with Crystal Palace Football Club to get games and consoles out to those disadvantaged families and places in need.

In the coming decades, we shall soon become a world that knows nothing other than the digital age, a world where gaming was either for some of us, always present and for others like me, something that began when we did. Where once video games were a lightening rod for everything seemingly wrong with the world, they are now increasingly becoming recognised as a force for good in this world (watch this space however for a stinging critique of sexism, racism and homophobia in the gaming universe – Incels, I am coming for you). Gaming has been proven to help stave off the early onset of dementia amongst the elderly (who knew Super Mario had it in him, eh mum?) and is now being credited with playing a major role in the combat against Coronavirus and its resultant social symptoms. It is now down to us to ensure that gaming grows from this point in history, that it remains a unifying force socially and culturally and that we learn from the part it has played in the fightback against COVID-19, the biggest of all bosses.
