The EuroPlay Video Games Contest took place at Gamescom yesterday and the winner was our very own!

The UK has finally won Eurovision!

No, not the singing competition where we received nil points earlier this year, but EuroPlay, the Eurovision equivalent for unreleased video games.

In EuroPlay, 15 studios from 15 countries battle it out with their unreleased projects to be crowned the champion of EuroPlay, and the UK came out on top with Robot Turtle‘s photography-based puzzle game Viewfinder.

The game is still currently in development at indie studio Robot Turtle, yet the puzzle game had already won Ukie’s Game of the Show earlier this week, an award to demonstrate the creativity and skill behind UK game developers, making it qualify to be put forward for EuroPlay.

The way games complete in EuroPlay is via a public vote and after 10,000 votes were cast, Viewfinder took home the title of EuroPlay champion!

The game itself consists of players using a Polaroid-style camera to take photos of their surroundings that can then make the photo’s contents come to life. Players must solve open-ended puzzles that encourage thinking outside of the box as you gradually master your abilities.

The game is set within a colourful retrofuturistic utopia inspired by brutalism and impressionism. Uncover this world’s mysteries as you’re drawn into a story exploring themes of transhumanism and utopianism. Along your adventure discover bizarre illusions, interactive gadgets and hidden secrets.

Ubisoft released a brand new trailer for the delayed upcoming instalment to the Far Cry series and it looks more intense than ever

Far Cry 6 has been waiting to be released for a very long time and after its initial release date was pushed back from February to October 7, and now a brand new story trailer was released at Gamescom last night by Ubisoft.

The first-person shooter game casts players as Dani Rojas, a resistance fighter leading a modern-day guerilla revolution to liberate the fictional island of Yara, which is being dictated by the main antagonist, Anton Castillo, voiced by the incredible Giancarlo Esposito.

The Far Cry 6 story trailer really shows how gritty the game will be by showing how ruthless Anton Castillo is as a dictator. It starts off by introducing him during a press interview after a group of rebels hijacked Castillo’s network Yaravision, where the interviewer asks the question if Viviro, a cancer cure Castillo has invented that sounds too good to be true, is produced by slave labour, and Castillo’s answer gives the audience a chilling indication at how heartless the man is and the lengths he is willing to go to, to make Yara a “Paradise”. It continues to show this portrayal of Castillo by showing clips of him grooming his son Diego (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) in his own footsteps- something that is also evident in the game’s official cover art with Castillo towering over his son. It shows the audience he is teaching Diego how to kill and later on, shows Castillo giving Diego a gun in what seems like an execution.

The trailer shifts to the protagonist’s perspective, Dani, where we start to see the familiar traits and themes of the Far Cry games as the protagonist is placed in a wilderness environment where they must help fight against one or more despots that control the region. We learn Dani is the last survivor after Castillo ordered a boat full of people to be shot, and the trailer takes us through Dani’s story of joining the resistance that is fighting against Castillo and his people.

Far Cry 6 has been advertised as the “largest and most ambiguous open world yet” for the franchise and we start to see that as the trailer takes us through the land of Yara. For the first time, players will be able to experience a sprawling capital city, Esperanza, which we get glimpses of during the rebel’s mission to overtake Castillo’s reign. It also shows the intensity of the mission Dani is facing with fast action sequences in various vehicles (a tank even makes an appearance) and shows off the brand new weapons players will get to experience in the gameplay.

Ubisoft has really used impactful cinematography and suspenseful storylines for this latest Far Cry game and it is sure to be something fans are excited to experience when it drops.

Fry Cry 6 comes will launch on October 7 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC and its available to pre-order from Go2Games here.

The original creator and composer of Tomb Raider are teaming up again for a brand new gripping action-adventure game

Toby Gard, a name you may not be familiar with but is responsible for one of the biggest characters in video game history, is back with a brand new video game.

It was revealed during the Gamescom pre-show last night that the Lara Croft creator is releasing a new game, Dream Cycle, a new action-adventure published by indie publisher Raw Fury and developed by Cathuria Games. Gard was involved in the original Tomb Raider game along with the trilogy Legend, Anniversary and Underworld (my personal favourites).

Dream Cycle

Dream Cycle is a first-person action game that has players take the role of Morgan Carter, a modern-day arcane apprentice. Trapped in a shattered dimension, Morgan Carter must defeat the corrupted inhabitants of the Dreamlands to break the curse and find his way out. On this journey, he will need to use stealth, traps, spells, and illusions to quietly clear the way or challenge enemies head-on, exploiting their weaknesses with conventional weapons.

It is clear to see that while ancient ruins may still make an appearance, the game is unlike anything Lara Croft went through in the Tomb Raider franchise, with more fantastical elements and different structural plotlines. Yet Toby Gard isn’t the only throwback to the original game as the original composer, Nathan McCree has also been composing the music behind Dream Cycle. He even hinted something big would be announced yesterday in a tweet for the pre-show.

Dream Cycle has been advertised as an “ever-growing platform for mystery and adventure” on Steam, hinting that the game will receive updates and possibly new stories and biomes to be introduced as it continues to grow- something that sounds incredibly enticing.

Dream Cycle is being added to Early Access on September 7.

The cloud gaming service for mobile devices and web browsers is coming to Xbox consoles this Christmas

Xbox held its live event at Gamescom yesterday and announced it would be bringing its popular cloud gaming streaming service to its consoles, meaning Xbox One users will have access to Xbox Series X/S games that are available on the cloud.

The Microsoft gaming giants have said it will be available in time for Christmas, and that testing for the Xbox Cloud Gaming on consoles will take place this autumn.

The Xbox Cloud feature will allow players to access over 100 games without needing to download them and be able to jump into multiplayer sessions with their friends without games being physically installed on their own consoles.

Xbox has also confirmed it will ensure the highest quality experience by supporting gamed at 1080p and 60fps across the range of devices, just like it does for mobile and PC devices currently.

The testing experience for the Xbox Cloud on console devices will be featured as part of Xbox’s Insider programme this autumn, in order to get valuable feedback to improve the experience.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series upgrade to its Azure DCs means that, when rolled out, users will now be able to stream Xbox Series games to previous-gen Xbox Ones. After four years of its initial release, Destiny 2 is finally getting a new expansion…

The popular Bungie free-to-play online multiplayer shooter, Destiny 2, is receiving its fourth expansion titled “The Witch Queen” and will be arriving across platforms on February 22, 2022.

This was announced during Destiny 2’s showcase live event at Gamescom yesterday, along with what fans can expect to see.

The Witch Queen Expansion

The Witch Queen expansion will introduce Savathûn as the new enemy. Known as The Witch Queen and sister to Oryx, the character has been hinted at ever since the game’s third expansion, The Taken King, which was initially released in September 2015.

Players will have to team up and face off with The Witch Queen, along with the Lucent Hive she is making on her Throne World, after stealing the Light and using its powers for her own creations. Players will be equipped with a whole host of upgraded gear and be allowed to customise and create their own tailored weapons too.

A new weapon archetype is also being added to The Witch Queen expansion. The Glaive, which players will be only able to access through crafting, will have extremely useful abilities such as sophisticated melee combos, shield deployment, and firing projectiles consisting of pure energy.

The live event also showcased the Light and Darkness saga will come to a dramatic conclusion in Destiny 2: Lightfall and Destiny 2: The Final Shape, hinting the story will be continued after the new expansion, with these releases coming out in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Destiny 2 x Halo 

Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, has also confirmed the rumours that there will be a Destiny 2 event to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary, however, it has not been confirmed whether it is the Halo crossover that has been rumoured recently in an online leak.

The 30th-anniversary event will be free to all Destiny players later this year and will launch alongside a paid-for cosmetics pack with content based on past Bungie games Marathon and Myth. The bundle will include an exotic weapon, a new dungeon, an exotic ship and sparrow, two universal ornament sets, four emotes and a unique helmet ornament.

The company didn’t mention Halo, however, some of the designs seem to be inspired by its first creation. This might mean another Halo announcement is to be expected, or the initial, leaked plans weren’t able to happen.

The world’s biggest gaming event is going virtual again this year and will be opening with a night to remember.

Gamescom is Europe’s leading fair trade of gaming and the world’s biggest gaming event each year, with hundreds of thousands of people flying over from all across the world just to attend.

However, like most events, Gamescom was made to go virtual last year and will be doing so again this year. Yet we have been promised to be in for a treat with the Opening Night Live Showcase.

Gamescom takes place from August 25 to August 29, with the Opening Night Live Showcase being held at 7PM BST / 2PM ET / 11AM PT.

This was announced by Gamescom’s present Geoff Keighley on Twitter.

Keighley goes onto promising the third annual Opening Night Live Showcase will show “this holiday’s biggest upcoming video games and what lies beyond”, and will be streaming and co-streaming everywhere. Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube are the most likely places where it will be streaming or co-streamed by its creators around the world. Over 2 million people streamed last year’s Opening Night Live Showcase, and it would be surprising if that number isn’t the same this year.

No other details have been released so far, however, looking back at 2020’s Opening Night Live Showcase, we can expect a night filled with trailers, announcements, and updates on highly anticipated, in-development games. EA, Bethesda, Xbox, indie partners and many more are signed up to be at Gamescom, yet Sony and Nintendo will be absent this year, but fans are hoping the companies will host their own State of Play or Direct showcases around the same time.

There is also usually a pre-show before the main event, which showcases additional announcements, but that has yet to be announced so far. Still, with 3 weeks to go, hopefully, there will be more announcements for us in store!
