Luigi’s Mansion: New LEGO Sets for the Fun, Survival Horror Game

You thought Halloween was over? Think again…

Nintendo has revealed it has partnered up with LEGO to bring some spooktastic LEGO Nintendo-themed sets which are based on everyone’s favourite sidekick and his adventures in Luigi’s Mansion.

That’s right, Luigi is embracing the main character he deserves to be and is getting his very own LEGO set!

The announcement was released yesterday that Nintendo and LEGO had teamed up, which was a very fitting celebration for Halloween. The survival horror game sees players control Luigi as he explores a haunted mansion, searches for his lost brother Mario and deals with ghosts by capturing them through a vacuum cleaner supplied by Professor E. Gadd.

There will be three Lego sets up for grabs: Luigi’s Mansion Lab and Poltergust Expansion Set, Luigi’s Mansion Entryway Expansion Set, and Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek Expansion Set. The sets won’t be available until January 1, 2022, but it’s good to get the hype up for these sets early.

The three sets will feature characters like King Boo, Polterpup, Bogmire, Toad, Professor E. Gadd, and Boo.

These sets will not feature Luigi sadly. He has already been released in the LEGO Luigi Starter Set, shortly after his brother Mario received a Starter Set. The LEGO Luigi Starter Set and some of the expansions were designed to encourage co-op play. Owners of both sets are able to sync up the two brothers by pressing the Bluetooth buttons on their backs simultaneously. They’ll greet each other with a “Hi, Mario,” and “Hi, Luigi,” to signal the connection is complete.

Super Mario Bros: Another Game Auction World Record Has Been Broken

The Super Mario Bros cartridge sold on collectors site Rally for double the amount of the previous world record…

If you have been following this blog for a while, you will know that there have already been three record-breakers when it comes to unopened video game cartridges sold at auction in the past year: Super Mario Bros NES, Legend of Zelda NES, and Super Mario 64.

And now, another video game cartridge has just taken first place.

The unopened Super Mario Bros 1985 cartridge was sold for $2 million, which knocks the previous record-breaker, Super Mario 64, which sold for $1.56 million, right off the top spot.

Unlike previous auctions that were held on Heritage Auction, the collectables site Rally has a different system in which the site buys items and invites people to invest in shares of those items. When an offer comes in, investors can either decide to vote or hold.

The Nintendo classic was originally bought for $140,000 in April 2020. Over 3000 shares were offered to investors for the Super Mario Bros cartridge at a total value of $150,000 in August 2020. The investors stuck to their guns and knew how profitable the game would be and even passed on a $300,000 offer that was made in the same year.

It was also reported by The New York Times that a graduate student invested in the game with $100 and made a $950 profit.

With gaming collectables becoming more popular and more expensive, it might not be surprising to hear about another record-breaking auction sale so soon…

Nintendo Switch: 89 Million Copies Sold Despite Profits Decreasing

The Kyoto-based company has seen a decrease in profits from last year but the number is still impressive…

Nintendo released its earnings for the April-June quarter this morning and the Nintendo Switch has now sold just over 89 million copies worldwide.

The handheld console made its debut all the way back in March 2017 and has now taken over the lifetime sales of the PS3, despite the infamous joy-con drift issues.

The Popularity of the Nintendo Switch

Despite it being a slow quarter for releases, the Switch’s profits are down from last year. However, this isn’t surprising at the Nintendo Switch definitely became a household item during the pandemic.

Switch hardware sales were down 21.7% to 4.45 million units and software sales decreased 10.2% to 45.9 million units. Revenue also decreased by 9.9% to 322.6 billion yen (£2,115,470,982), while operating profit was 111.9 billion yen (£733,728,300), a 17.3% decline year-by-year, according to The Verge.

Most of the game industry (much like any other industry) suffered a great deal last year with everyone being made to work from home, games having to be pushed back or delayed, but one game for Nintendo Switch certainly made the biggest impact of them all. Animal Crossing: New Horizons debuted in March 2020, just as the world was starting to shut down, and became an instant remedy for the perils of the outside world that anyone could escape to.

Nitendo managed to sell 10 million copies of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the first quarter, then managed to nearly double it’s figures during the next. As it stands, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 34 million copies globally with 1.26 million copies being sold during this quarter. Other games that game out during this quarter have been the new Pokemon Snap and Mario Golf: Gold Rush, selling just over 2 million and 1.34 million respectively.

Sales and profits might be down, however, we have a great line-up in store for the Japanese giants, with the new OLED Switch coming out in October and games such as Metroid Dread, WarioWare: Get It Together, Mario Party Superstars, and remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl being released throughout the year up to Christmas.

Donkey Kong: Nintendo’s Next Hit Smash?

There’s an abundance of Nintendo news for fans today as there are reports of the Donkey Kong franchise becoming the company’s next big push for multimedia products with a game, animation, merchandise and a theme park expansion reportedly in the works.

It’s A Donkey Kong World After All…

A historically reliable Nintendo insider Zippo, who has previously claimed that a new Donkey Kong game is in development with the Mario Odyssey team alongside publications from Nintendo Life, is now claiming that the video game is part of a larger push for the franchise.

I’ve been told by multiple people that Donkey Kong is the next franchise in line to follow Mario in Nintendo’s push for their game franchises to become multimedia juggernauts… This new game is not just a one off, DK is being taken seriously at the big N again, and that should be good news for fans everywhere.” – Zippo

Zippo also states that Donkey Kong is getting an animation (yet their sources do not know if it’s for a tv show or a movie), a theme park expansion, and more merchandise. Even though this is nowhere near an official announcement, there are various pieces of evidence currently floating around that are able to back these claims.

Donkey Kong Theme Park Expansion

Universal Studios is already pushing ahead with its plans to expand the Super Nintendo World theme park with a Donkey Kong-themed expansion. Super World Japan opened to the public earlier this year and it features a locked door hidden towards the north of the park that can only be described as a Donkey Kong-esque design.

The Super Nintendo World theme parks are set to open at Universal Studios around the world but the next one might not appear until 2022-23 so it isn’t clear if Donkey Kong will make it to those just yet.

Donkey Kong Animation

The Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently indicated that the company is exploring the potential of creating more animation content for its other game series. At the present moment, there is only a Super Mario movie in development with the studio Illumination, which has a 2022 release window for the time being.

Nintendo has always been very protective of its intellectual property, having only two previous video games adapted in the past 30 years (The Legend of Zelda animated series and the unforgettable Super Mario Movie), yet Nintendo has previously stated it has already embarked on other visual content projects, in hopes leverage its popular IP and join the battle of the online streaming services.

Extremely Rare NES The Legend of Zelda Cartridge for Auction

An extremely rare and sealed NES cartridge of The Legend of Zelda has been put on auction and it’s already working up to cost a rather large sum of money.

Zelda History in the Making…

The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most popular franchises of all time. It’s become a household name for the Nintendo family and has over 27 different titles that have sold over 52 million copies since its first release in 1986. We’re coming up to celebrating 35 years of the action-adventure game, so this piece of news is perfect for any die-hard fans out there, even if it might already be out of your price range.

The sealed, early production copy of the first game in the groundbreaking series recently appeared on Heritage Auctions, and has been dubbed as a “true grail among games”. This is because it is not only one of the best sealed with a 9.0 Wata A sealed rating, but could also be one of the earliest productions of the game. It is a “No Rev-A” varient, which means the game was produced in 1987 before it was replaced by the “Rev-A” or “revised-A” variant in 1988. It is said the only other variant that is rarer than this, is the “NES TM” variant, the first true production run of the NES cartridge. As it stands, this varient of The Legend of Zelda is the earliest possible version of the cartridge that can be obtained on the market and it is the first public opportunity to have this collector’s item.

If that has you wanting to bid on the game, the most current bidding at the time of writing this is $110,000 (£79,372), with a buyer’s premium of $22,000 (£15,878).

Yeah. Not sure if your Rupees will be able to cover that either.

It has yet to reach the auction record for most expensive video game collectible; that title belongs to another NES cartridge for the game Super Mario Bros which sold for a bid of $660,000 (£476,240). Yet the bidding has four days left and anything could happen at that point.

If you would like to celebrate The Legend of Zelda anniversary at a much cheaper cost, Nintendo will be releasing the remastered Wii game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, in July. No other plans have been announced to celebrate the anniversary so far.
