After two years in the beta stage, the Chinese version of Fortnite is finally shutting down.

The official site of the Chinese modified version of Fortnite has announced it will be shutting down on November 15.

Epic Games and Tencent launched the modified site in 2018 where it stayed in beta testing for two years before this announcement.

Fortnite in China

No one will longer be able to register or download the Chinese modified version of Fortnite from now on and the servers will be closed on November 15.

The reason for the server closing wasn’t stated, yet China is very strict when it comes to regulating games, specifically battle royale ones like Fortnite.

To Fortnite China players:

Fortnite China’s Beta test will be ending, and the servers will be closed soon. For details, please see below:

On Monday, November 1 at 11 am, we will close the new user registration entrance and game download portal;

On Monday, November 15 at 11 am, we will turn off servers for Fortnite, and players will no longer be able to connect to the game through the WeGame client.

Thank you to all the Fortnite China players who have ridden the Battle Bus with us by participating in the Beta.

If you have any questions or suggestions about the servers closing, please click here to send us feedback.

Fortnite China Operation Team
October 31, 2021 (Translated for Kotaku)

Fortnite‘s Chinese version was in beta testing for over two years and the government didn’t grant Tencent a license, despite the company publishing the game there. As such, Tencent was unable to monetize Fortnite with in-app transactions.

Similar games like PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds received no monetizations from China either and only when Tencent launched a gore-free replacement titled Game for Peace did it finally get the green light, as stated by Daniel Ahmad on Twitter.

Players that did experience the modified site would also experience certain differences compared to the original Fortnite. There was a separate health bar for damage sustained in the storm, and players could earn a Victory Royale if they survived for long enough.

In other sad news, Dr Mario is also shutting down its servers which you can read more about here.

The League of Legends developers are looking to explore the Chinese market more

Riot Games, known for its popular online battle arena video game League of Legends, has announced it will turn its attention more to China by adding a new headquarters in Shanghai and with extra focus on new games for a global audience.

Hundreds of roles will be created, according to the CEO of Riot Games, Nicolo Laurent.

League of Legends Dominates in China

China is a very important market for Riot Games because of the popularity of PC Gaming, with 32% of game revenue and nearly 45% of gamers in the Chinese market, according to Niko Partners.

League of Legends is also incredibly popular there, with a lot of passionate fans for the video game, as well as the developer itself.

The League of Legends World Championship, the annual professional League of Legends world championship tournament, was held in China in 2020 and will be held there again this year.

More e-sports and world competitions have become extremely popular in China, with estimations predicting e-sports will make $1 billion this year due to China’s contribution, and it’s that market Riot Games wants to tap into.

In China we have a lot of passionate players for ‘League of Legends’ and for Riot Games.”

“So as a result, we would like to double down in China and continue to invest here including not only working on e-sports, but for example, game development and other things like entertainment.” – Leo Lin, VP and head of China for Riot Games.

Not only that, but Mobile Gaming has become increasingly popular in China and now accounts for the biggest revenue overall in the country.

Riot Games launched its own mobile game last year titled League of Legends: Wild Rift in some regions, yet it has to fully launch in China. This is a change for Riot Games but the company believes it is an important area to move forward with and used a familiar title to kickstart this transition.

Riot Games is 100% owned by Chinese gaming giant Tencent, however, the developer has stated Tencent respects it works independently and has not tried to influence anything with their products.

One year after its release, it is arriving globally…

The mobile JPRG based on the famous Street Fighter series, Street Fighter Duel, has been heavily covered since its announcement in 2019. The game stemmed from a partnership between Tencent Games and Capcom, and we were all for it. Street Fighter fans globally were dying to get their hands on this portable entry to the series. However, these same fans were left disappointed as it was announced the game was only being released in the Chinese market. Well, fear not, one year after its arrival, the game is set for a global release.

In the game, players form a team of three fighters to face off against various other teams and opponents. The enemies range from other fighters to cyborgs, to street thugs, to Shadaloo agents and soldiers. The game also has a 3 vs 3 “real-time” system mechanic. Similar to The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match Online, Street Fighter: Duel includes a single-player story mode with plenty of dialogue cutscenes that advance the plot, unlockable character cards, hard-hitting team combos, quick-time elements (which involve pressing the on-screen buttons with precise timing to defeat opponents, or to fill up a meter below the screen) and a level-up system for each fighter as the player progresses through the main game, among other features. The game has more than 30+ stages, consisting of stages from previous Street Fighter games, as well as all-new ones made for this title., where players get to create a team of three warriors and then take on waves of enemies or other teams depending on their mode of play. Similarly, the game has 30 Street Fighter characters to choose from, each using their Street Fighter 4 costumes by default. Each character has been divided into different types such as Wind, Mountain, Fire, Forest, Dark, etc., and are also ranked on a rarity basis. The developer has promised to add more characters to the game in the upcoming update.

Sadly, no information with regards to the global launch date has been revealed yet. It looks like players will have to wait a bit longer to jump into the action.

Stay tuned to Get2Gaming and we will make sure to inform you as soon as more details come available.

Chinese gaming giant Tencent has announced its intention to fully acquire British studio Sumo in a £900m deal.

Tencent, which has already invested in more than 800 firms, is one of the biggest companies in the world by market value. They have stakes in various well-known publishers and developers, including a 40% stake in Epic Games, a 5% stake in Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and many more. Just this year, Tencent used its subsidiary Proxima Beta Europe BV to acquire a 22% stake in French developer Dontnod Entertainment. Tencent also wholly owns the developer Riot Games, the studio which brought us League of Legends and the ever-growing Valorant.

It seems Tencent is continuing this trend as they are now looking to purchase the British developer Sumo in a deal worth more than £900m. Tencent already owns 8.75% of Sumo and is its second-biggest shareholder. Sumo has 14 studios spread across five countries and is known for titles such as Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Crackdown 3 and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

“The Board of Sumo firmly believes the business will benefit from Tencent’s broad videogaming eco-system, proven industry expertise and its strategic resources,” said non-executive chairman Ian Livingstone in a prepared statement.

Daniel Ahmad, the senior analyst at Niko Partners, said that Tencent would likely continue its hands-off approach to Sumo’s management.

“Tencent is acquiring Sumo Digital for its breadth of experience developing and operating AAA games and live service games, the majority of which are developed for clients such as Sony, Microsoft, Sega and others,” he said.

“Tencent will continue to support Sumo on these work for hire projects, but the company could also be an invaluable partner for Tencent as it looks to push into the AAA game space itself with its own projects.”

“The deal would also help Sumo utilize Tencent’s expertise regarding games development and publishing within China.”

This news comes shortly after rumours that Tencent was looking to buy Crysis developer Crytek. It seems Tencent is making bigger moves than ever.

What does this mean for the developer?

The Chinese gaming giant Tencent is reportedly looking to purchase the developer Crytek in a deal worth 300 million Euros. Crytek is most known for being the studio that brought us the first Far Cry game, the Crysis series, and more recently, the enjoyable multiplayer experience Hunt: Showdown. These games also run on the developer’s own CryEngine, which has been licensed to other studios.

As reported in German tabloid newspaper Bild and journalist Julian Röpcke, Tencent wants to buy the German game and software developer via a European subsidiary.

The report also notes how CryEngine is used in military simulations (see below).

#Scoop
According to information, exclusively obtained by @BILD, Chinese internet company #Tencent is trying to buy German games developer #Crytek for more than 300 Million Euros via a European subsidiary.
Crytek supplies several western armies with military simulation programs. pic.twitter.com/tjtbfvNGJk

— Julian Röpcke (@JulianRoepcke) July 13, 2021

This is standard behaviour for Tencent. They have stakes in various well-known publishers and developers, including wholly owning the developer Riot Games, the studio which brought us League of Legends and the ever-growing Valorant. Alongside this, they have a 40% stake in Epic Games, a 5% stake in Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and more. Tencent had previously used its subsidiary Proxima Beta Europe BV to acquire a 22% stake in French developer Dontnod Entertainment earlier this year.

In response to the report, Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad, who specialises in covering the Chinese games market, has noted, “it’s not a secret that Crytek has been in discussions with a number of buyers.”

What this means for the future of Crytek is still unclear. If the acquisition occurs, we will just have to wait and see what Tencent has planned for the developer.

Super Mario Party will have its own demo stations installed in certain IKEA and Holiday Inn hotspots across China in something that can only be described as an unprecedented partnership.

Where’s the Mario Super Party at?

Nintendo, Tencent, IKEA, and Holiday Inn have come together in a truly unique collaboration to enter the Chinese market. They will be bringing Super Mario Party to hotel visitors, both in the lobbies and in visitor rooms, as well as IKEA showrooms via Nintendo Switches.

Nikos Partners industry analyst Daniel Ahmad shared this piece of news via Twitter with pictures of what the layouts are expected to look like. There will be 24 Holiday Inn locations and 12 IKEA locations that will allow guests to play Super Mario Party for free or have a Nintendo Switch in their room. This promotion will last until the end of August.

12 Ikea locations have also converted show rooms to a Super Mario Party theme and let people play the game during their shopping experience.

Both promotions are running between now and August 31.

Super Mario Party was recently released in the country with the online update. pic.twitter.com/1sNsFUsqEZ

— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 4, 2021

Why Super Mario Party?

One question you might be asking yourself is why is this collaboration happening?

Well, there are several reasons. The first and most simple one is Nintendo wanting to enter the Chinese market. China doesn’t have a video gaming culture like Japan or the US so the company has a standing agreement with Tencent to help sell Switch consoles in China due to the challenges they face daring such a feat.

The reason IKEA and Holiday Inn are involved is due to domestic tourism climbing across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic limiting international travel. It’s the perfect opportunity for a cross-promotion within the hotel industry. Having Super Mario Party in regular places like Holiday Inn and IKEA can also help introduce what Nintendo offers.

I mean, who doesn’t love to discover the mystical land that is IKEA?

As for why it’s only Super Mario Party being offered in these locations, it’s a very easy and fun game to promote to families, couples, or even for people to enjoy by themself, let alone one of the latest releases by Nintendo. Yet if this partnership is successful, Super Mario Party might not be the only game they introduce like this.

If you want to be able to enjoy playing a free game outside the comfort of your own (no, this isn’t a competition to be able to travel to China), why not visit our shop in Centrale, Croydon? With the ability to play on Nintendo Switch and PS5 for free, it might be up to par with what China has to offer.
