A big announcement is going to drop at The Game Awards 2021 and bets are on the Breath of the Wild sequel…

The Game Awards 2021 are fast approaching and it has been teased we are in for some big announcements during the award show, including a world premiere of a major title.

There are many games that this could possibly entail, but one game that people are guessing will be the ‘world premiere’ is the sequel to Breath of the Wild, and there are multiple factors as to why.

What we know about the Breath of the Wild sequel

The organiser of The Game Awards 2021, Geoff Keighly, took to Twitter to tease he had seen the final cut of the world premiere the award show has been working on with the developer for 2 and a half years. This obviously got gamers very excited and curious as to know what game Keighly is talking about and some think they have already worked it out to be the sequel to the Legend of Zelda series that debuted on Switch.

Just saw the final cut of a #thegameawards world premiere we have been working on with a developer for 2.5 years.

Truly honored we are entrusted to share this work with the world.

— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) November 28, 2021

Breath of the Wild was an instant hit when it debuted in 2017, and fans couldn’t wait for the sequel when it was announced at E3 2019. It has been 2 and a half years since that announcement which matches perfectly for the ‘world premiere’ Keighly mentions.

Some people have argued that since the BOTW sequel has previously been announced, it goes against the idea of a ‘world premiere’, however, Nintendo Life pointed out in their article that there have been instances in the past where so-called premieres for The Game Awards have been aired for games that have already been glimpsed by the public.

Nintendo has also been deliberately holding back on releasing the title for the BOTW sequel as it will give too much away for what fans can expect, so it is possible we might get some gameplay footage or a teaser trailer when the title for the sequel finally gets released.

Finally, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma recently said the development is running ‘smoothly’ on the sequel and that will can expect more information this year. The Games Awards would be the perfect time to do so.

The Game Awards 2021 will be streamed live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 9 and world premieres and musical performances are set to be featured.

Yes, this gaming classic has been rushed, but at least it’s in impressive fashion.

Speedrunner Savestate finished Ocarina of Time in just 4 minutes, 51 seconds in the timed demo on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl disc. This is pretty impressive, considering Nintendo only gave players a five-minute time limit to play the game.

As part of the Masterpieces collection found on the Super Smash Bros Brawl disc, you’ll find titles like Super Mario Bros on the NES, Starfox 64 on the Nintendo 64, and F-Zero on the SNES, among others. It was intended for fans of Super Smash Bros to play one of the games within a 1-5 minute time limit, and once their time was up, they would be directed to the Wii Shopping Channel to purchase the entire game for the Virtual Console. However, with the help of several speedrunning tips and tricks they picked up to pursue this achievement, Savestate managed to complete the entire game without ever being directed.

Nintendo gave fans two pre-loaded save files to use during the Ocarina of Time demo, the first for young Link’s journey and the second for adult Link’s journey leading up to the game’s end credits. Savestate cleared both of them in a combined 4 minutes and 51 seconds, an awe-inspiring feat, even if rushing this gaming classic is a crime in itself (I jest).

Go2Games has been nominated for two separate awards (by the Croydon Awards) for our efforts in our community.

The Super Mario Bros cartridge sold on collectors site Rally for double the amount of the previous world record…

If you have been following this blog for a while, you will know that there have already been three record-breakers when it comes to unopened video game cartridges sold at auction in the past year: Super Mario Bros NES, Legend of Zelda NES, and Super Mario 64.

And now, another video game cartridge has just taken first place.

The unopened Super Mario Bros 1985 cartridge was sold for $2 million, which knocks the previous record-breaker, Super Mario 64, which sold for $1.56 million, right off the top spot.

Super Mario Bros 1985 Cartridge

Unlike previous auctions that were held on Heritage Auction, the collectables site Rally has a different system in which the site buys items and invites people to invest in shares of those items. When an offer comes in, investors can either decide to vote or hold.

The Nintendo classic was originally bought for $140,000 in April 2020. Over 3000 shares were offered to investors for the Super Mario Bros cartridge at a total value of $150,000 in August 2020. The investors stuck to their guns and knew how profitable the game would be and even passed on a $300,000 offer that was made in the same year.

JUST IN: @OnRallyRd investors accept the $2 million offer for high end, sealed Super Mario Bros., a new record for a video game.

Original investors who got in on IPO last year receive a post tax 973.6 percent gain on their shares. pic.twitter.com/JwFsCGX0FV

It was also reported by The New York Times that a graduate student invested in the game with $100 and made a $950 profit.

With gaming collectables becoming more popular and more expensive, it might not be surprising to hear about another record-breaking auction sale so soon…

After coming in at first for the week ending 17th July ahead of the newly released F1 2021, Skyward Sword HD has dropped into second for the following week (ending 24th), with the pair switching places. Zelda received a 74% drop in sales between the two weeks.

EA’s racer sold best on Xbox Series platforms, followed by PS4 and PS5, respectively, and ultimately shifted more copies across the board than Skyward Sword this time around.

Nintendo enjoyed another strong week overall, however, with five Switch exclusives finding their way into the top ten. Further down the pack, Cris Tales has debuted at number 36, with the Switch version outperforming all PlayStation and Xbox editions at retail.

Here’s a look at this week’s top ten all formats chart:

Skyward Sword HD is No.1 in the UK, the fourth No.1 for the Zelda series.

The latest UK physical video game software charts are now in, and Nintendo Switch’s newly released The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is No.1 for the week ending 17th July. The game is the fourth game in The Legend of Zelda series to reach No.1 following Link’s Awakening (Switch), Wind Waker (Gamecube) and Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64). You may be wondering why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild wasn’t No.1, but it went up against Horizon: Zero Dawn on the PlayStation 4 in 2017. Here’s the GfK Top Ten for the week ending 17th July:

The original Skyward Sword, released in 2011, was one of the lower-rated Zelda games due to a few tedious mechanics which worsened the experience. Well, Nintendo listened and made various changes to the game this time around. The game has received positive early reviews and is clearly doing well (at least in the UK). Their conscious effort to remove such mechanics for the remaster seems to be paying off.

For those intrigued by the title, see the most recent trailer below:

The reviews are rolling out…

We recently reported the changes between the upcoming Skyward Sword HD remaster and the original, alongside briefly detailing the first review for the title. Well, more reviews have since been completed, and we are going to take you through a few of them here. If you are more interested in the specific changes between the two games, see the previous article.

Video Game Chronicle – 5/5

“While even an excellent remaster such as this can’t make Skyward Sword a perfect Zelda game, this is such a drastically improved version of one of the most overlooked entries in the series, and Switch owners simply mustn’t overlook it a second time around.” – Chris Scullion. (Full Review)

The Verge

“…this port is improved in all of the expected ways. It runs smooth, the graphics look cleaner (despite a few muddy textures here and there), and the new control scheme makes it a more accessible version of Skyward Sword. There are even some nice little tweaks, like a slightly less chatty talking sword that serves as your guide. The biggest barrier is your expectations. Yes, it can feel dated after Breath of the Wild. But for me, at least, the fantastical world, clever puzzles, and challenging dungeons made it worth pressing through. And given that the still-untitled sequel to Breath of the Wild looks like it’ll feature a similar sky-themed world, this could be just the thing to hold you over until its release.” – Andrew Webster. (Full Review)

Game Informer – 8/10

“In some ways, Skyward Sword was the end of an era. It follows the pattern Nintendo established back in 1998 with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and it was the last game in the series before Nintendo reconceived the series with Breath of the Wild. In some ways, Skyward Sword perfects Ocarina’s template, but that formula also feels well-worn and stuffed with unnecessary junk. Despite all the ways Nintendo updated this package, Skyward Sword remains far from my favourite entry in the series, but this is clearly the best way to play this blemished gem.” – Ben Reeves. (Full Review)

GameSpot – 7/10

“The various quality-of-life tweaks that Nintendo has implemented here, welcome as they are, don’t fix Skyward Sword’s biggest issues, and it remains the most uneven 3D entry in the Zelda series. Even so, the improvements in this Switch remaster make the overall experience more enjoyable, and the characteristic Zelda magic ultimately outshines the game’s faults.” – Kevin Knezevic (Full Review)

The Guardian – 4/5

“Nintendo has done an unconvincing job of trying to position this remaster as a kind of prototype Breath of the Wild, and it sets newcomers up for disappointment–and undersells Skyward Sword’s unique charms. It’s hard to think of two Zelda games less alike: one a celebration of unbridled freedom and emergent thrills, the other an on-rails rollercoaster built by Nintendo’s brainiest puzzle architects. Somewhere in the middle, there is a potent compromise – and the skydiving in the forthcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild suggests it may have been found. But until then, Skyward Sword is doomed to feel less ambitious. After Breath of the Wild, though, what game isn’t? A backward step it may be, but Link still holds that sword arm high.” – Matthew Castle. (Full Review)

Famitsu – 34/40

As reported previously, the first review was done by Japanese publication Famitsu, with western reviews still a few hours away from publication at the time of writing. Famitsu’s scoring system is different from the typical. Four different reviewers rate the game out of ten; in this case, the magazine’s reviewers opted for scores of eight, nine, nine, and eight, resulting in an overall score of 34/40.

The general consensus seems that if you expect a Breath of The Wild calibre game, you will be quickly disappointed, as the formula is more reflective of older classic Zelda games. However, the remaster seems to have corrected a lot of the tedious mechanics players found vexing in the original, and despite the controls not being perfect, it is seemingly still a good edition in the Zelda franchise and the perfect game to sink your teeth into until Breath of The Wild 2 comes around. Of course, I have not played the game myself, so my voice is formed through a collection of reviews, not by my own experiences. I will have to wait to play it before taking you guys through how I perceived the game. It is due to be released on July 16th (for £49.99), and I cannot wait for another dose of The Legend of Zelda.

Since then, it has broken the auction record for the most expensive video game collectable sold to be then toppled two days later.

Super Mario 64 takes Zelda’s Crown

On Friday, a rare sealed copy of The Legend Of Zelda cartridge from 1987 shattered the previous record of the most expensive video game collectable sold at auction, selling at the grand total of $870,000 (£627,274). The previous belonged to Super Mario Bros which sold at auction in April at $660,000 (£476,240).

It was true history in the making, with Valarie McLeckie, Heritage Auctions‘ video game specialist, stating they had high expectations for the game, and the reality of the bidding exceeded their version of how it would play out.

Yet on Sunday, only two days later, an opened copy of Super Mario 64, managed to break that record, selling at an astronomical price of $1.56 million (£1.12 million).

The N64 cartridge received a rating of Wata 9.8 A++ rating, 0.8 more than the Zelda cartridge and the highest possible rating there is. Heritage Auctions stated, “the cultural significance of this title and its importance to the history of video games is paramount, and the condition of this copy is just so breathtaking that we’re really at a loss here,” and that it was “an opportunity not to waste.”

And it surely didn’t go to waste, with the auction making $690,000 more than The Legend of Zelda auction on Friday.

Nintendo has just released a new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD dubbed “A Hero Rises.”

With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD just around the corner (available July 16th, 2021 on Switch), Nintendo has released a new gameplay trailer, “A Hero Rises” (see below).

Skyward Sword HD is the remastered version of 2011’s Wii title. It is the sixteenth mainline entry in The Legend of Zelda series, released worldwide in November 2011. The game was re-released digitally on the Wii U eShop in September 2016 to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary and now it is coming to the Switch.

Skyward Sword is the first game in the Zelda timeline, detailing the origins of the iconic Master Sword, a recurring weapon within the series.

This is the overview of the game provided by Nintendo:

“Take to the skies, draw your sword, and experience the earliest story in the Legend of Zelda™ series. Join Link in his high-flying quest to save Zelda, a childhood friend who must confront her destiny. Soar between floating islands and descend to the treacherous surface world in this updated HD version of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game.

Master realistic swordplay that corresponds to your movements

Gently swing your sword and angle your slashes to uncover and break through opponents’ defences using intuitive motion controls. Link’s in-game movements will correspond to the angle of each strike you make with the Joy-Con™ controller, creating immersive swordplay that relies on strategy and accuracy. Movements feel smoother and more immediate thanks to the Nintendo Switch system’s increased processing power and HD graphics. Take advantage of the newly-added button only control scheme—perfect for playing in handheld mode or on the Nintendo Switch Lite system.”

I am particularly interested to see how well they utilise the Switch motion controls. In general, any new instalment of the historic franchise is always welcomed with open arms, and I, for one, cannot wait to experience the enhanced version of this gaming classic.

There’s an abundance of Nintendo news for fans today as there are reports of the Donkey Kong franchise becoming the company’s next big push for multimedia products with a game, animation, merchandise and a theme park expansion reportedly in the works.

It’s A Donkey Kong World After All…

A historically reliable Nintendo insider Zippo, who has previously claimed that a new Donkey Kong game is in development with the Mario Odyssey team alongside publications from Nintendo Life, is now claiming that the video game is part of a larger push for the franchise.

I’ve been told by multiple people that Donkey Kong is the next franchise in line to follow Mario in Nintendo’s push for their game franchises to become multimedia juggernauts… This new game is not just a one off, DK is being taken seriously at the big N again, and that should be good news for fans everywhere.” – Zippo

Zippo also states that Donkey Kong is getting an animation (yet their sources do not know if it’s for a tv show or a movie), a theme park expansion, and more merchandise. Even though this is nowhere near an official announcement, there are various pieces of evidence currently floating around that are able to back these claims.

Donkey Kong Theme Park Expansion

Universal Studios is already pushing ahead with its plans to expand the Super Nintendo World theme park with a Donkey Kong-themed expansion. Super World Japan opened to the public earlier this year and it features a locked door hidden towards the north of the park that can only be described as a Donkey Kong-esque design.

The Super Nintendo World theme parks are set to open at Universal Studios around the world but the next one might not appear until 2022-23 so it isn’t clear if Donkey Kong will make it to those just yet.

Donkey Kong Animation

The Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently indicated that the company is exploring the potential of creating more animation content for its other game series. At the present moment, there is only a Super Mario movie in development with the studio Illumination, which has a 2022 release window for the time being.

Nintendo has always been very protective of its intellectual property, having only two previous video games adapted in the past 30 years (The Legend of Zelda animated series and the unforgettable Super Mario Movie), yet Nintendo has previously stated it has already embarked on other visual content projects, in hopes leverage its popular IP and join the battle of the online streaming services.

How do you feel about this new expansion? Are there any other video games franchises you would like to see receive this expansion?

An extremely rare and sealed NES cartridge of The Legend of Zelda has been put on auction and it’s already working up to cost a rather large sum of money.

Zelda History in the Making…

The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most popular franchises of all time. It’s become a household name for the Nintendo family and has over 27 different titles that have sold over 52 million copies since its first release in 1986. We’re coming up to celebrating 35 years of the action-adventure game, so this piece of news is perfect for any die-hard fans out there, even if it might already be out of your price range.

The sealed, early production copy of the first game in the groundbreaking series recently appeared on Heritage Auctions, and has been dubbed as a “true grail among games”. This is because it is not only one of the best sealed with a 9.0 Wata A sealed rating, but could also be one of the earliest productions of the game. It is a “No Rev-A” varient, which means the game was produced in 1987 before it was replaced by the “Rev-A” or “revised-A” variant in 1988. It is said the only other variant that is rarer than this, is the “NES TM” variant, the first true production run of the NES cartridge. As it stands, this varient of The Legend of Zelda is the earliest possible version of the cartridge that can be obtained on the market and it is the first public opportunity to have this collector’s item.

If that has you wanting to bid on the game, the most current bidding at the time of writing this is $110,000 (£79,372), with a buyer’s premium of $22,000 (£15,878).

Yeah. Not sure if your Rupees will be able to cover that either.

It has yet to reach the auction record for most expensive video game collectible; that title belongs to another NES cartridge for the game Super Mario Bros which sold for a bid of $660,000 (£476,240). Yet the bidding has four days left and anything could happen at that point.

If you would like to celebrate The Legend of Zelda anniversary at a much cheaper cost, Nintendo will be releasing the remastered Wii game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, in July. No other plans have been announced to celebrate the anniversary so far.
