It’s the new year and it looks like new projects are on the horizon for the director of acclaimed driving series DriveClub. Paul Rustchnysky has announced that he has been working alongside Avalanche Studio’s new Liverpool team to develop a brand new title which will be announced later this year. However, there’s some bad news for DriveClub fans as it will not be a racing game. Time to put that DriveClub 2 wish list away from another year, I suppose.
Rustchynsky, who was also lead designer on several MotorStorm titles at Sony’s Evolution Studios, had this to say upon the matter:
“In 2021 we (Avalanche Studios Group) opened a new studio in Liverpool, an exciting moment for me having achieved one of my career goals,” Rustchynsky wrote on Twitter. “In 2022 we’ll get to announce the game we’ve been working on for the past year”.
He added: “To set some expectations, I’m not working on a racing game. So sorry, no DRIVECLUB sequel, MotorStorm successor or ONRUSH offshoot. This is something very different to anything I’ve worked on before.”
Additionally, the infamous director went on to explain that this will be an original venture. “There are more projects being worked on at Avalanche than most people would expect!”
This will come as a surprise for many fans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean its an unwelcome one! This could be the start of something very exciting and we cannot wait to see what they have to offer. Especially with the new Avalanche Liverpool branch, which seems to be looking very exciting indeed.
Following Evolution Studios’ closure in 2016, the majority of its staff were hired by Codemasters to work on a new racing project.
However, following disappointing sales of 2018’s Onrush, several members of the Codemasters EVO development division, including Rustchynsky, were reportedly let go and the division shifted towards a support role for other titles, such as 2020’s Dirt 5.
