What is dusk?
Dusk is the game that really kicked off the “Boomer Shooter Renaissance” that we currently find ourselves in. with Quake like graphics, a setting and enemy that resembles Monolith software’s under-rated “Blood” and gameplay that feels like the natural evolution of the Genre, Dusk became an instant cult Classic. The game was developed by David Szymanski, Produced by Dave Oshry, Published by the now ubiquitous New Blood entertainment, best known for giving their games meme domains like “FallenAsses.com” “DevilMayQuake.Com” and “ThiefWithGuns.Com” and features Music by Andrew Hulshult, who did the soundtrack for Doom Eternal Ancient gods DLC’s
Dusk tells the tale of “the dusk dude” a treasure hunter who makes his way to the town of Dusk, Pennsylvania in an attempt to search the ancient, Eldritch ruins that have been discovered under the town. Along the way he ends up being captured and thrown into the basement of a farmhouse, where the game starts.
The game is fast, frantic and smooth, with the ability to Slide at high speeds available to the player from the start and a diverse range of weaponry, including 2 lever action shotguns that can be dual wielded and a rivet gun that is the games rocket launcher and BFG alike. Also there is no vertical aim lock when jumping, so you can literally backflip in midair while shooting at the guy behind you with a shotgun.
The Update
Dusk has recently launched on the switch. With this, developer David Szymanski has taken the opportunity to go back and add some of the console features from the switch port into the original PC version of the game. The “new and old” update has added some major new features into the game. First off is a weapon wheel, which is designed in a similar fashion to Doom 2016 and Eternals use of the concept, and can be used to select weapons quickly. On mouse and Keyboard it is bound to Q by default, but this change is really there for the Controler players, who can press the right bumper to bring up the wheel. While personally using the number keys to switch weapons is second nature to me, this change will help ease players into This style of FPS, especially if they struggle to remember what weapon is bound to what slot.
Another change is that controller binds are easier now and the game now supports Dualshock 4 inputs natively. The Worldmap is easier to read now, Autohop and Autoclimb are now available, making B-hopping easier, and finally you now have the option to have an old school style hud. You know the ones, the Block that sits at the bottom of the screen taking up wholly too much space but with some cool art? Yeah, that’s now a thing
The Future
And this isn’t all for dusk. In the blogpost about the Update, Syzmanski said
“Now that all this stuff is FINALLY out of the way…
We can get back to working on the remaining SDK features and Steam Workshop support.
And boy oh boy is that workshop going to come preloaded with some GOODIES.”
Dusk already supports modding, although it doesn’t yet have built -in Workshop support. The game can actually read and load Classic Half-life and quake maps, despite being on Unity and not the Idtech2/2.5/Goldsource engines.
In any case, The future of Dusk and new blood is looking bright and bloody.
