The time has finally come for what many FIFA players did not expect to see. It is usually around this time of year where we see the “coming this autumn” slate of games starting to rear their head around the corner. However, one familiar face is noticeably missing from the future EA Sports products lists this year, and football fans won’t be happy to hear who.
On Thursday 24th March 2022, Giant Bomb reporter and host Jeff Grubb enquired about the possibility of the term EA Sports Football Club being shortened to EA Sports FC. What exactly could this refer to? With EA Sports games usually containing a mixture of single-player and online modes, the trademark could have referred to any kind of n-game mode. It could even have been taken for nonpublic-facing reasons.
Despite this change, that isn’t the big news I’m referring to here. EA sports also hinted on its official blog that it could “rename our global EA Sports soccer games”. Interestingly, it seems like they can do this while still managing to retain its licensing arrangements with most of the leagues and clubs. The big question is though- why are they doing this?
Why Has The FIFA And EA Relationship Broken Down?
This breakdown could have happened for a number of reasons. Firstly, it could be to put pressure on FIFA to stop its aggressive, high-dollar licensing requests which have caused EA issues for a number of years. Not only this, but rumours suggest EA executives believe that its arrangement with FIFA has been restricting possible development and design directions for future titles. Yikes.
Grubbs did some more digging and suggests that the rumours are unfortunately true. “EA Sports Football Club, or EA Sports FC: That’s the name.” After recalling the October 2021 trademark reveal, Grubb doubled down: “That’s the name… at least, as it’s planned right now.”
So what do you think about the name changes? Will you still be buying an EA licensed football video game come September? Let us know in the comments down below! In the meantime, have a look at what other changes will be coming to the new addition this year. Also, if you want to get in on the FIFA fun, well you know where to head!
